We planted a hillside with little early spring bulbs at least 20 years ago and they have multiplied. They are followed by woodland ephemerals, so our pollinators are well fed.

Last year l used the 1 3/4" dia auger but this year got a really neat tool for hole digging. its a about 9 " in length and has two sets of jaws which form a circle with the handle above. One presses on handle into earth and rotate in both directions. it has a depth gauge on the side. Pull out and pull in on handle and VOILA the clump of earth is released. l picked mine up at ACE hardware in gardening section for $5.99 US(last one)and online they are 11-15$US plus shipping.. l advise using it after some rain to make it make it easier to dig in and make the tool last longer. l used it to plant some 36 early snow glories(blue in color) and some giant crocus., 50 2 month grape hyacinths and 2 dozen dark eye grape hyacinthsl So l will leave a legacy after l'm gone of a complete blue lawn in earky spring . get that tool and as Tony the tiger would say ITS grrrRREAT. and after using it you may want to ditch your auger.(the 4" auger is great for bigger plants).any replies would be appreciated..

Loved this!! 4 yrs we have tried to decide what to do abt our steep slope that starts at the far edge of our front yard, and extends almost straight down to the street. It is an eyesore for us and anyone who drives past our house, 3 out of 4 seasons, because of massive weeds. If we manage to mass-plant bulbs on the slope, I'm afraid weeds will grow between them. No one will be able to pull weeds if that happens, because it's too steep. Is there hope? Can you please advise? Zone 7b, W. TN. Thanks so much! 🐮🤠🌿

@sbffsbrarbrr
@sbffsbrarbrr Жыл бұрын
I'm curious how you actually use the pepper. I feed squirrels in my yard so there are usually a half dozen or more running around and aerating the lawn 😁 . I would love to plant bulbs in my lawn but wonder if it would just be an expensive wasted effort.
@GardenGateMagazine
@GardenGateMagazine Жыл бұрын
Great tip! Several organic mixes include cayenne pepper.
@kso808
@kso808 Жыл бұрын
@@sbffsbrarbrr Well, first I usually spray Liquid Fence deer repellent on the plants or growing area in question. Then I shake some cayenne pepper on the same spots and plants. The liquid makes the cayenne cling better and longer to affected areas. I do this with species tulips (which I’ve read elsewhere are supposed to be critter-resistant) and lilies/bulbs. I also have many squirrels in my yard, and if they get some of the pepper on their paws I believe they’ll stay away for the most part. I really only use all of the above in limited-space island beds, not within my lawn.

This is such a great idea! Do you have to eventually divide these bulbs? I’m not super familiar with bulbs but I’ve heard it’s recommended to divide every few years or so for best performance. Not sure if it’s actually necessary or not but just wondering how much work that would be if it needed to be done for a large area like that.
