Your larger Windmills are stunning. I am quite a bit north of you, but I am pulling it off with a few Trachycarpus Fortunei palms and a Needle palm up here in SE KY

Thank you, you will be surprised to know that they were all the same size when we planted them. I just had a shorter hose at a time and I guess the middle one got least of water. Good luck with your palms, I am sure you will enjoy them for years! This was a great investment for us.

@@aridon1981 Sweet. I am on the zone 7a/6b line, so it is iffy growing Windmills this far north in the US but I will protect against any artic blasts. Last winter was so mild, coldest night was only 15 and I didn't need to protect them, no burn damage🌴🙌

hi Larry, I am in Mississauga planting a Pindo and Washingtonia Robusta come spring. We decided to forego the Windmill palm for now in favor of two showier varieties. Though the windmill may come into play the following year at the front of the house.... What winter protection methods do you use on your Trachys?

@@Salmiyaguy1 Hi Charles, I use the styrofoam box method with a heat cable, and has worked great for me. My box is tight around my windmill palms and I never worry about the box blowing off. I have 2 vent holes one on the bottom and one at the top. I wrap up the fronds individually and then tie the bundle uptight. At the base, I pile up dirt 8 inches high and compress the soil so gritters can't enter the enclosure. My panels are put together with duct tape with no wood frame. I use garage door styrofoam panels at home depot which are R5 and the outside I wrap with a white plastic tarp. My method takes me 10 minutes to put together in the fall.

Hello Larry; Come springtime I am planting a windmill along with 2 blue Mediterranean fan palms. What would be the best soil combination to give them a good start. Thinking of using a 3 way mix along with a bit of sand and perlite. Any feedback is appreciated. I like your idea of creating a styrofoam box without the wooden frame. It will be fine, they are really not tender plants. Just fertilize them at least once a year. I used the "Espoma Organic Palm Tone". After established, water them once a week if it doesn’t rain and they will be thriving.

You don't have to add any fertilizers, but you can add organic ones. The one in the video is called Palmtone, you can also use Bonemeal as an alternative. Stay away from syntetic fertilizers for around 6 months after planting. Optionally you can add a little compost to the backfill around 10% maximum and also mulch when finished. Just make sure to pull the mulch away from the trunk itself so it does not rot. Lastly water it extra in the first couple months in the ground.

I'm from Finland and I've thought about getting a windmill palm. We have cold winters but I heard that they resist coldness quite well so we'll see.

If they sell them in your local garden centers you can ask about care and growing tips. In our zone, Windmill palm is the regular palm, sold as a perennial and so far the coldest we had was -10°F.

@@maple494 It is desirable to plant when it's not too cold and not too hot. So Spring and early summer or fall are the best time to plant.

Your palms look amazing. How should prune my 20 yr old palm trees like yours which are now very tall. I have been cutting off any floppy branches and seed pods etc. Now someone has chopped 4” off most of the leaves this year and they are already turning yellow. Are they dying? Advice please would be appreciated 🌹

Hi, I only trim the dried leaves. If you haven’t fertilized your palms this year yet, I would feed them a little with any Palm tree fertilizer. If you already fed them that in the Spring, then once a month feed them with soluble all purpose fertilizer and just water if it doesn’t rain. It could be under shock after a harsh pruning or sun. The heat is unbearable this year. It should come back. Good luck.

Hi, Thank you 🌷 I used a bag of potting mix because that's all I had handy. If you were to plant a Palm tree you can use just about any garden soil, add so.e sand if you wish too and Palm tone.

How wide do the roots grow. I just bought one that about 4-5 feet tall and want to put it near the pool but was afraid the roots would mess up the pavers. The guy at pike said plant at least 15 feet from pool but I'm seeing all kinds of pics with them right next to the pool.

The roots are not deep. They look like thin spaghetti and don't grow long. We recently noticed one of our palms being wobbly and took a risk of replanting it. So when we dug it out there were barely any central root, more of shallow roots around. So fingers crossed it survives replanting. But our pavers ar fine, before that we had concrete deck around and never any issue. Just to sleep better plant them at least 2 feet away. If your space allows further, go for it but the roots are not a threat. Enjoy.

What hardiness zone is this? I read some parts of georgia are zone 9 and some parts of the state are 6. In Zone 6 you would need winter protection for those palms. I am planting palms in Toronto and need winter protection.

We're in zone 7b. I do need to mulch them in the winter for some protection and if it snows, I just dust off the snow.

Hi, Nothing special really for winterizing except mulch them well. If it snows, shake off the snow off the branches. Fertilize with any organic fertilizer for palms in the spring and water well in the summer, at least until established. You will love them!

Even though the palm tree roots are thin, you might want to plant far away from your pool, because the roots tend to migrate towards moisture

I can’t tell anyone what to do. For my backyard I had a vision and it was to have Palms around the pool, to feel like you are in a resort. The Palms were planted first, at that time we had a concrete deck around the pool. The pavers came few years later. From what I see, the palm roots are pretty shallow and so far it has not affected the pavers. Happy planting!

I think sand would not be a bad idea but I don’t have a drainage issue here. Mostly my concern is keeping the moist😃. So I use top soil, soil conditioner or mushroom compost, cow manure that sort of things

My father and I planted a windmill palm in my parent's front lawn when I was teen. My father has passed away as has my mother. The palm is tall, but the base is very thin. I am afraid that it is top heavy and will eventually fall over during heavy winds. What can I do to increase the width of the palm's base? Will it thicken on it's own? Is this something that I shouldn't worry about?

How tall is it? If you touch it is it shaking or sturdy? If it doesn’t move when you touch it then I would not worry about it but care is required. Add Pam tone twice a year, add more soil around it, mulch it and water when it doesn't rain.

It's normal for Windmill palm trunks to be thin at the bottom and get thicker at the top especially the more mature palms nothing to worry about 👍

Personally I think this thought of digging a big hole is total rubbish ,I have planted over fifty palm trees and only ever dig a hole big enough to put the palm in,that makes the roots naturally go downward and then outwards into the new soil it's in and keeps it more stable and never stretch or pull the roots that will stress you're palm tree out and it will stop growing ,they hate having their roots messed with and go into transplant shock !
