Great info- Thanks so much! Our zones changed 🎉 your probably zone 7b as of this year. I just bought some small $50 palms from zone 8. The nursery said i should wrap the base burlap during the winter. Imgoing to plant by my porch but maytransplant next year.

Here in Canada they are only long term in zone 8b. I have seen some in zone 8a south east of Vancouver in very sheltered locations out of cold winter winds. I planted some in zone 8a / 8b 34 years ago when they were seedling size and they are nearly 30'ft tall now. They will never grow without winter protection to far inland east of the our Pacific Coast here in Canada. My other YT channel is full of palm videos. Great channel you have here and awesome info. My other channel is Bananajssi

Some seem to do fine with minimal or no protection as far north as 7b NYC. Surprising that some are struggling in the Vancouver area, maybe its the anemic temperatures throughout much of the year.

@@catcountry0099 Certainly is genetics too. After growing these things for 4 decades I have learned a lot about Trachycarpus palms. Length or freeze also creates a problem along with late or early cold blasts

Are the palm spesific fertilizers worth it? I found a granular that are 12-8-16 And contain a lot of micronutrients as well like iron, copper etc. Its a 1/4 the price of palm fertilizer. Would you recommend that blend if I mulch as well and add some compost every year to make the soil get more organic matter and life in it as well?
@tntropics
@tntropics Жыл бұрын
I can't recommend a fertilizer I haven't used myself. It is always best to have the fertilizers in slow release form but you can use other types. I would rather it be a palm specific fertilizer or you can check and see if the micronutrients are a higher % like the palm fertilizers. The only ones I know that are slow release are florikan, osmocote and palmgain. Palmgain I think the nitrogen is the only slow release.

Thank you for info what about these plants in area of torrevieja alicante spain I brought one not so long ago I put it in a medium size pot and hope to put it in a bigger black plastic pot in the spring I put it on my small terrace as I don't have a garden, how do I stop the roots from too much water also what mixtute of soil to plant it in come spring Thank you 😊
@tntropics

If palms are outside you can water pretty freely when temps are over 27 C. Check top 8 cm with finger and when it dries out water. As for soil it may depend a little on what heat conditions you have there. I use a palm mixture available at Lowe's here called Palm and cactus mix. If you are in very hot weather you may need a mix with more peat in cooler areas more pearlite/pumice in the mix.

Are there any procedures to plant and lift in fall to container to overwinter inside?
@tntropics
@tntropics Жыл бұрын
You would be much better off leaving in a pot and stealth planting the pot in the landscape (Hiding with other plants/mulch) as digging it would disturb roots too much each year.

Do you think it's a good idea for me to spray a product like wilt proof to prevent transpiration on the two windmill palms I'm getting tomorrow? We are in 7b in drought conditions with average daily highs of 96 F.

Thanks for the good info. I was in Nashville last week and was going to try to grab a couple. Looking for another needle palm cheaper than online shops. The 0 degree freeze killed my needle but left my unprotected sabal minor unharmed. I thought that was interesting. Only difference was I planted the needle quite late in the season

We have a windmill palm and it appears to stop growing. There are several weed looking plants growing around the base. Do we need to remove these “weeds”.
@tntropics
@tntropics 11 ай бұрын
If it is 100% a windmill palm then yes remove any plants from the base. Some people confuse other suckering palms like needle palms or European fan palms for windmill palms and those palms have offsets or suckers that grow from base. Windmill palms should be kept watered well and I have no idea where you are located.
@jayb.289
@jayb.289 11 ай бұрын
@@tntropics yes it is a windmill palm and located in Greenville, SC. Thank you for the info. We have been very reluctant to remove these. Hopes that now we have removed the suckers, the palm will continue its growth
