Silly question if you put tulle over the strawberry plants to keep critters out how do the flowers get pollinated for fruit production? My inquiring mind wants to know, because we have squirrels and chipmunks, and gophers and groundhogs and birds all attacking my strawberries . Oh and a little black speckled bug that I haven’t been able to identify yet. I’m getting 45 crowns this spring and I want to be able to enjoy some berries and make some jam. ❄️💚🙃

I've seen bees work their way under the tool where birds cannot. However it's in full of flour you can remove the tool. Strawberry flowers are self fertile but sometimes they need a little help. You can do that by shaking the flowers much like we do tomatoes

you will want to make a lid with hardware cloth. put it on hings with a latch. this will keep out the warmblooded stuff, bees can get in.

I have a strawberry growing suggestion. I live in PNW WA in an apartment. I planted in the soil, hard clay, a couple pineberries. It didn’t do great, but didn’t die. The owner decided to cut down a tree and put the chopped bark all over as mulch. Suddenly the pineberries went insane. In one season they spread runners all over and I cannot count, maybe 500 plants? Maybe more? So my suggestion is if you live in the PNW, and have clay soil, you may wish to topdress your strawberry beds recently made bark dust from a tree. This may help a lot.

If you think you will have problems with birds or other critters wanting to eat your strawberries, you can paint a bunch of rocks red. Set the red rocks all over your strawberry bed. Hopefully that will discourage anything eating them when the strawberries start to produce.

Can strawberries be planted in containers? I am not allowed to dig, so I do my "gardening" in buckets, and totes. Also what about hard freeze? MN gets a LITTLE cold in the winter, and my stuff freeze's solid!
@davinasquirrel7672
@davinasquirrel7672 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely you can grow in pots (although I am not sure about a hard freeze and containers, they may need to be moved to a garage). Where I am, fairly cold winters, hard frosts, very occasional snow, and I just leave the pots where they are. My senior plants are probably 8 years old. They do not produce much, but the little they do is throw out strawberry seedlings all around them, which I dig up and transplant. I primarily do my (newer) strawberries in Kratky hydroponics (which also did not need special treatment over winter, but you will likely need to do overwintering, just search for 'overwintering strawberries'). One reason I switched the newer plants to hydro, is faster and more reliable yields.

Most varieties of strawberries have a die back in winter, and most varieties need a winter to fire up again. There are a couple of varieties that do not need a winter, but I believe they have a shorter producing span. What it sounds like to me, is that your strawberries went into winter die back. Just put them outside again. You cannot get them to grow inside unless you have grow-lighting, and heat above 25°C. But again, most varieties want to die back for the winter.

After being tempted to harvest 1 piece, the asparagus freaked out and thicker pieces started to come out. Coincidence?

@@NextLevelGardening yoor setup is bad... your asparagus will grow sideways and you will have alot of uneatable growth. also you forget speaking about how to prepare in the early spring of the 3rd year, your asparagus will get bad if you dont pile up earth on top- People who copy your set up will get uneatable green asparagus all over the place instead of need columns of incredible tasty white gold. Cutting small amunts of it with a wood chisel works, but you want to invest in the right tool for a large harvest. the last day of harvest is a bit tricky, but it shouldnt be much after midsummer in most places.
