I never use any organic material to mend with the native soil. This could cause problems with root rot later down the road. I Always use native soil to back fill the hole. I then mulch with minimum of 1 foot. 2 feet preferably to retain moister during the summer and keeping roots cool and keeps roots from freezing in the winter. Otherwise good video!

Hey Gary, love the videos my man! I thought I’ve seen you put some E.B. Stone plant fertilizer on newly planted trees before? Should I not do that? I have some 15 gallon Avocados I’m getting ready to plant, please advise if it’s ok to put the fertilizer on a newly planted tree. Thanks! Also when are you gonna get your San Diego location up and running? I live in Oceanside and will come by and grab some trees from you there someday?
@ScaryHairyGary4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the fertilizer is a good idea but I've found with tons of slowly decomposing mulch, you almost don't even need it. The SD place is up and running but as it is a residential property rented to tenants, it is not open tot he public to disrupt them. I can deliver anything anywhere from SD to Redding so just let me know what you need. Thanks

Thank you...will sleep better tonight: chop and drop. Did that and a year later Hass is ten feet tall. But will it produce fruit? My research said it would. Do you travel as far as Santa Cruz to catch waves? Manresa Beach to be precise. I have 58 trees ranging from 20 to 10 years of age. They are very happy and are getting very big. I am using a 15 foot pole chain saw to top with. But then what? I am a 72 year old disabled vet and getting to old to climb trees to harvest. I do need a plan. Maybe if I am to far for you to travel a conference call could be arranged. Or maybe I'm just freaking out and should just go with what little I know. Question of the day: when would Staghorn pruning method be used instead of stumping. Thank you very much for your valuble utube video's.

Why not use a mattock digging tool? Shovels are for removing the soil the mattock has loosened, especially in southern California's clay soils.

The sun dictates the climate in cycles. You haven't lived long enough to see a cycle start to end to repeat. Certain areas of the earth will be warm or cold and experience changes. You can't do a thing to disrupt the cycles. Only if you live in the giant city that has concrete will you experience hotter micro climates. Look back in history and it will show what the people recorded at that time as to what their climate was like. It will get extreme in some places as the grand solar minimum intensifies. Why do people think the climate changes in a few years ? It will take decades and centuries to see climate change. Watch a few grand solar minimum channels to educate you, just like you know your planting trees and plants in your zone. I love your humor in your videos. Blessings to you and the family

hey there can you please advise and give some tips how to plant an avocado in clay soil please
@liarzdice4 жыл бұрын
Above ground. As in nearly completely above. We have nasty clay here. Stuff so sticky you could probably make pottery out of it. Make sure you have 3 feet for the main tap root to dive down and not suffer root rot from meeting 100% clay. You can ammend it a bit before planting, maybe a foot below grade with organic material, however keep in mind clay will act like a pot with no holes, rotting the tree from the roots and up if you plant too low. Above grade fill in with good loose soil, perilite/vermiculite, some sand, wood chips, composted fertilizer/poop of some kind (preferably not yours) and top it off as he did here. Don't let it touch the trunk though. Oh and don't mix sand directly into the clay unless you want claycrete.

There' are two great videos from Laguna Hills Nursery on KZbin growing avos where this is discussed, as I remember you dig a square hole 4x4x1 mix the dug soil with pure sand, 50/50 , and as Gary's method make a mound with and plant raised. Cover with 6" wood chips. Good luck

It’s so annoying that I have to buy heaps of trees to get a different variety. I want to graft scions though onto my seedlings. I have a bacon and fuerte I got from a local nursery. I want lamb hass and some other A type varieties.

@@NMW80 there is no shop that deals on grafted avocado trees in India... So, people started growing only from seeds and it has been quite very beneficial for the local growers.

You mention you don't want root rot, yet you have wood chips in your soil mix, which causes root rot, that is a real no no! I also noticed you didn't move the wood compost on the top away from the trunk another no no. I was told if you spray water on the leaves on a hot summer day in July, it can cause the leaves to burn. Please check out "Gary's Best Gardening", and how to grow avocados, to learn about soil for them, and why you should never put any wood matter in the soil!
@ScaryHairyGary9 ай бұрын
I don’t believe in this theory of no wood in the soil. Root matter of dead plants is wood in the soil, and that is the natural order of things in the forest when trees die those roots will decompose, and pre-become food for new living organisms. Everyone has their opinion and this is mine and it’s not unique. Please follow this link if you would like to understand more on this topic. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%BCgelkultur#:~:text=H%C3%BCgelkultur%20(German%20pronunciation%3A%20%5B%CB%88hy%CB%90%C9%A1l%CC%A9k%CA%8Al%CB%8Ctu%CB%90%C9%90%CC%AF,planted%20as%20a%20raised%20bed.

Also, some thing of note is that most all Nursery container mixes are mostly grounded up wood product with usually some sand, Perlite, vermiculite, or other inert materials. But the bulk of the material used, including that used to produce our avocado trees is chiefly ground up fir bark. If this was not a viable material to introduce into the soil, then it would not be universally used
