I'm just learning and getting started with one Clematis. It's great to have an expert like you to turn to on KZbin. I'm excited to try more. Thanks for the videos.

Well, now I'm encouraged to try clematis in a pot. Thank you for warning against using a plastic pot and adding that it absorbs and holds to much heat. I hadn't thought of that. But, did know clematis loves a cool base for its roots. Thank you kindly for this video, Raymond.

Nice video. I like the tips. I'm wondering what plants or flowers do you recommend. To pot around the clematis? And I'd like to grow it indoors. Will it grow year round. Or once September comes. Do I store it in the cold garage. Or my basement.. that stays cool

I live in Illinois and our winters are very freezing cold. Will it be safe for the clematis to survive when I leave it outside during the winter? I bought the plant early this year and noticed that it has greens coming out of the bag. Or can I plant it in the yard since it's mid-April but it still feels very cold?

Thank you very much!! I have a question in winter the clematis stay out side or in side?
@raymondevisonclematis62044 жыл бұрын
It depends on your hardiness Zone. They are fully hardy in UK. In US they are normally fine in containers Hardiness zones 5 and above. The Plants themselves are typically hardy to Zone 4 but as a rule of thumb "add a zone if in a container". Though if exposed in a container it might be best to move nearer the house and/or into an outbuilding/indoors.
@crystallover48744 жыл бұрын
The Clematis I have are zone 4 , the containers are big but plastic. I don’t know if it will be ok but I’m thinking in covering them with a blanket or something like that to make shour they don’t freeze but with zone 4 Clematis are so beautiful. In Canada where in zone 5
@raymondevisonclematis62044 жыл бұрын
A covering would be useful. Or if the container is moveable bring inside/nearer house/under shelter.
@MatildaandSuki3 жыл бұрын
Doubt if they would survive a Canadian winter in a pot, but it would look nice.

Thanks for the advice. I've never been able to grow clematis - lost 4 - they always die, so am going to try in terracotta pot. What position in the garden is best, sun, shade? 🙂
@raymondevisonclematis62044 жыл бұрын
Hi, Classic advice is “feet in the shade, head in the sun” though a mix of shade and sun is fine. Normally best to avoid South facing aspects unless you can provide some shade to base of plant.

We appreciate there is some hesitancy to use chemical pesticides in the garden but some of the products available to the gardener are relatively soft and wildlife friendly - e.g. for Aphid/Whitefly/Mildew SB Invogorator stanbrouard.com/sb-plant-invigorator/ for slugs some of the iron based pellets such as Ferramol (explained here in RHS literature). www.gardenorganic.org.uk/news/rhs-trials-organic-slug-pellets-perform-better-those-toxic-metaldehyde

Can I put a few roots in a longer cement pot in order to create a Clematis garden wall?
@raymondevisonclematis62044 жыл бұрын
Apologies for late reply - cement as a material for a pot is fine, and clematis tend to like deep pots, but must be well drained and not waterlogged. But not sure we fully understand your question.

Most clematis can be grown in pots or in garden situations- but take care to position where roots and plant will not get too hot (or indeed too cold in winter).

@@raymondevisonclematis6204 Can clematis be successfully dug up and relocated? Is the root ball deep and extensive? They have been in place for many years. Are they more prone to wilt if dug up? I have paid good money for over a dozen or so clematis over the years and don't want to replace them and some are hard to find in my area. Any advice would be appreciated.
@raymondevisonclematis62045 жыл бұрын
@@basilwilson2796 Hello - in short. Yes. Clematis can be relocated. It is best to undertake this at a low stress time and for regular Early Large Flowering cultivars ('ELF') it would best be Autumn (when growth has stopped, but allowing a little bit of root development prior to winter) ..... OR .... Early Spring before the plant has come out of dormancy (Say late jan-mid-february in northern hemisphere). ELF clematis roots tend to dive down...so dig deep...but the diameter of the rootball only need be up to 20cm/8"... Soak the rootball in a bucket of water prior to replanting. - it is also best to remove a quantity of top growth to mirror the growth the plant has lost in roots. (see www.raymondevisonclematis.com/pages/trees-walls ) for planting tips. ?Wilt ? - this tend to be used as a generic term for any stem damage/fungal rot, and is rarely true clematis wilt. Though a post planting spray with a copper based fungicide available from a garden centre is not a bad idea.

I've now bought a large stone pot. It has one drainage hole - is this adequate? Would I use less stones at bottom of pot to allow more drainage in this case? Thanks
@raymondevisonclematis62044 жыл бұрын
Hello, Stones on base in themselves do not necessarily help that much as drainage largely relies on capillary action. However some broken / curved crockery placed over hole at base can help as they may help prevent blockages.

Is there ever any risk of the annuals planted around the clematis hindering the clematis growth? Some of the annuals I've bought were so vigorous i'm a little nervous to fill the rest of my 18 in terra cotta pot with other flowers for fear the clematis (The President) won't do as well.
@raymondevisonclematis62045 жыл бұрын
yes, you are right to be careful, we recommend less vigorous shallow rooted annuals
