Hard neck isn’t for braiding. Much better to braid the soft neck varieties. The scape stem is usually too stiff and will snap if you try to braid. Love you guys! Happy fall gardens!

You can freeze peeled garlic cloves, you can make garlic oil ( put 2 cloves in olive oil and leave it for 2 months in dark)

I grow my garlic down the middle of most of my beds - seems to help with insect attacks early in the season. Have found that you get bigger heads if they get plenty of space around each one (I usually plant 4-6 inches apart) and a lot of sun. Same with onions for that matter. Agree that hard necks would be very hard to braid - we always use softnecks for that.

Something that keeps me from getting depressed in the winter...is starting my seeds indoors in february. So the months that i am not gardening are the holiday months...and then i can start my garden plants indoors After that. :)

You can braid hard-neck garlic, but it's not as easy to braid as soft-neck, because of the scape that it grows, it's a little tougher stem and not as flexible as a soft-neck.

when I was last in Israel it was garlic harvesting time. They were selling the garlic with the long stem and long roots still attached and the aroma was intense and so wonderful and the taste was beyond expectation

I live in NY and have had my hardneck garlic last, in a basket, a full year in a 65-70 degree room. I harvested in July, saved the biggest bulbs and planted in October and then fermented the garlic from last year. I am interested to see if the newly harvested hardneck garlic will keep for a year again.

Hard neck is essential Over here in the freezing temperatures where winters are always below zero to negative 40 degrees and have a short period of summer. Most of the soft necks can’t handle the extreme freezing temperatures since multiple feet of soil will be frozen for months. So it’s important to note that based on your zone. Soft neck can make it outdoors through winter but you will loose a lot of them. But they do produce bigger heads. Also elephant garlic is excellent for those that want a big head and live in winter zones.

In zone 9b/10a it's time to order soft neck garlic. I'll put them in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks to mimic a cool winter them plant them out late December early January.

It's so sweet seeing you and your sister in the garden together. I also agree that everyone should grow flowers even if you're just leaving them for the pollinators. I have hummingbirds coming to drink from the pineapple sage. It brings me so much joy coming out there and seeing them. Grow to feed your family but also grow something that feeds your soul too.

TThis is my Very favorite VLOG of yours so far...Sisters....After cooking on a fairly large scale (200+ weekly), I've found a combination of fresh and dried garlic (and onion, and potentially other dried herbs/spices) mixture really enhance flavor. I encourage you to try the dehydrating...which is then granulated or powdered...not salt, unless you add salt.

I grew onions from seed last year! It was the first time I ever planted onions and I didn’t plant enough but I was sooooo excited when I harvested real full sized onions!! If you don’t cut off the scapes on hardneck garlic, the energy will go into the flowers and not the bulbs of garlic underground. The scapes are delicious, so cut them as soon as you see them in May/June (depending on your zone)and harvest much larger bulbs in July.

Hi Jill and Brooke! first of all My little sister's name is Jill, so love,love,love that name! I just planted my garlic today from garlic I harvested this past summer. I planted about 250 cloves. It wasn't easy because I have RA, OA and back issues and have to sit in a chair to work in my garden (wish I had raised beds, It's not in the budget, we are on a fixed income). I started growing flowers like Zinnias, cosmos and dahlias for cut flowers to put in my house and especially my almost 100 year old Mother-in-law's room. (she just went to be with Jesus last Saturday!) Off the subject of gardening for a moment. just have to tell people. She just met Jesus almost 2 years ago at almost 98 years of age, and was baptized in his glorious name a couple months after that. so we celebrate her going home. it's a joyous thing although we miss her. Back to the flowers, she so much enjoyed the bouquets I brought to her from my gardens. I've always grown flowers in pots on my porch, but inspired by you and your friend Jessica(from roots and refuge farm) I started growing more around the yard and in my garden to encourage more pollinators. No hardneck can’t be braid . Also hardneck like cold weather. For zone like 9-10 soft neck is better due to not getting too very cold

I haven’t grown garlic yet and have a question 🙋🏼‍♀️…if you pick the scape off of the hard neck garlic does the bulb stop growing? Are you growing entirely for the scapes or are you getting the garlic later in the season too🤷🏼‍♀️

If you don't cut off the scape before it flowers, the bulb will split to prepare to grow the following year. Split bulbs don't store well and should be used first because they have already started the process of sprouting. The bulb is pretty much done growing when the scapes start. The extra time in the ground is developing the papery covering that helps it store longer.

Ok, i watched this video last night. Got up this morning and planted 120 cloves of my garlic i've been sitting on for awhile now. maybe a month lol i just didn't know when i should plant it. Anyway, its in the ground now BUT what i wanted to ask was right after planting the garlic do i need to water it in really well and do i keep watering it or just cover it with straw and let it be?

Great question. Depending on your average monthly rainfall. I always immediately water mine after planting but here in AR, we get alot of rain so I don't have to water much after the initial watering.

Hard neck garlic is the one that grows in the wrong way in the bed 🤭
