Yes, I grow in 6b and you need to get them in before it freezes but I don't believe growing in a container would work in the north unless it is somehow protected because the cloves should still not freeze solid. Which you run that risk due to the container not being protected by surrounding soil or some sort of insulation.

Is it possible that the garlic you refrigerated before planting had already been refrigerated before you purchased them? Could that be why they grew smaller?

I have hard garlic planted in 2, 20 gallon fabric pots. They are in my garage. I let one frost hit and then brought them in. They are mulched with 2 inches of pine bedding, stuff used for hamster, rabbit cages. They are protected from wind and extreme cold in the unheated garage. Watered occasionally. My pepper plants, same thing, along with my container blueberry plants😉 I am in chilly Michigan.

Growing garlic is a ton of fun. Planting it in the north is always exciting trying to get your timing right!! I'm in zone 5 my garlic has been in the ground for about a month already give or take a week. If you miss your window in the fall you can plant in the spring, just get the cloves in the ground just as soon as you can work the soil, don't worry if you get a frost after you have planted and your crop will most likely be a bit later then one planted in the fall. I have tried planting in containers with mixed results. The bulbs closer to the edges of the container seem to freeze completely and die. Oddly, I don't have that problem in my raised beds, go figure. Here in the north we can only plant hardneck varieties and yes you are correct we get wonderful scapes from them. I was unaware that softneck garlic didn't get scapes. I have a fantastic recipe for garlic mashed potato soup that I use the scapes for. You can use them in any recipe that calls for garlic, just use a bit more as the taste is not as strong as garlic cloves. Hope this helps some gardening here in the north!! Happy planting.

Hi Brian!.. have been away for a long time, but back into gardening again now. The cilantro thing is, as far as Im concerned.. something you must learn to like,, or.. accuire a taste for ! .. once you do, you quite enjoy it! .. that has been my personal experience anyway, as. A child in northern Canada, we never even knew of cilantro! Our mothers didn’t cook the foods that its called for, so until we first ventured down to Mexico as adults 👵🏻 we had never tasted or heard of the plant, but, now we love it in our salsas and I cook often with it as I now enjoy the flavour a lot thanks for this garlic video .. you are the best! Im gardening in containers only,..in northern Alberta.. on my 4th floor deck , but .. I must be able to grow something in order for my soul to be”nourished” 😝 BEST..CHERYL🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦

If you are having issues with the wind striking your microphone which records as a dull roaring noise, there is a simple solution. It is called a "dead cat" or "wind breaker". Basically, it is a fuzzy covering for microphones. I get mine for a few dollars from various eBay sellers. The way these work is the air currents are broken up into micro-currents that are not recorded. The sound of your voice is not affected by the fuzzy covering. The end result is a clear recording in windy conditions. Terry Thomas Director of Photography Atlanta, Georgia USA

I had tried to grow cilantro earlier to coincide with my crops being ready, but not one seed germinated. I'll try again next year. I may try a late planting of garlic in my makeshift greenhouse over a raised bed. I have potted plants in there still thriving in spite of multiple hard freezes outside it... so, I can try some garlic in the raised bed and some in a big pot and see what happens.

I then placed chopped up straw mulch around them right before the first frost. I also covered them over with a protective screen so the birds wouldn’t get to them. The screen is not waterproof though. I’m curious to see if they will make it through our winter and I will be able to harvest garlic next year.

The bulbils were from some scapes that I didn’t get cut off this year. I planted some last year as well. They supposedly can take up to 3 years before you get decent size garlic cloves but I decided to give it a try. As for cilantro, my son and I both like it but my daughter hates it. I did find that when I made a Thai dish that used the root and some stem rather than the leaves she liked it and said it didn’t have the soap taste.
