What I learnt: 1. Plant in Oct/Nov; 2. About 10 bulbs in a pot that size; 3. Add broken pieces of pot at the bottom to aid drainage (or stones, or plastic pots upside down); 4. Plant about 20 cm deep; 5. Position about 5cm apart; 6. The cold of the winter will activate them into growth; 7. They’ll emerge from late April. Many thanks, very useful video :)

I may have missed something. Where do we store the pots for the next few months. In a shed? Just leave them out? What about squirrels, etc? Thanks for this. ♡
@violetgreen121 Жыл бұрын
I've never had a problem with squirrels but that's not to say it can't happen. I heard that if you sprinkle coffee grounds on top, that will discourage them. Also, a piece of wire or netting would work also. I put my pots under an overhang to prevent constant soaking of rain or melting snow. I also make sure the pots don't dry out completely - just a slight watering once in a while to keep things slightly moist. If it gets really cold where you are, wrap the pots with some kind of insulation (paper, old sheets, plastic bags, hay/straw) just to keep out the extreme cold.

Broken pots are fine for drainage but they make your pots heavy. Use packing peanuts bc they are lightweight and never deteriorate. I save all of the peanuts that come to my house and I have bought bags of them. I fill my pots about 1/3 rd full.

I’m a newbie. Looking for clever ways to fill the tall vases with something besides expensive soil, I used the idea of styrofoam peanuts. They worked great until it rained A LOT. My husband and I were amused when the soil appeared to grow an inch or so over the top of the vase. The peanuts soaked up the water and swelled. DUH! This gardening thing is very challenging and sometimes pretty funny!
@annettegradus93412 ай бұрын
Is this pot 45 cm deep? I assume you are filling 1/2 way at 20cm deep with 20cm deep of soil coverage (40cm). Thus leaving approx a 5cm lip at the top of the pot?

From what I've read about the hybrids that can be bought from Farmer Gracy, they're not guaranteed to come back year after year because they aren't native to the UK. They might come back but when they do they will look more and more faded and tired each year. So what people do after the first year is plant the bulbs in the flower bed instead and hope for the best.
@Sexyeyes7003 жыл бұрын
Tulips are said to not come back when planted in pots from what I researched last year, though maybe you can pull them up, dry them out, then chill and replant again in new soil, and a clean pot.

I've been told that Tulips (unlike Narcissus/Daffodils) don't naturalise in beds but I have not come across an 'instruction' to reflesh them after die-back (even though I do it). Is it advisable? btw, always a good idea to label your stuff in pots or in the ground!!

tulips do not need much water as they can live in dry soil. I suggest to water them only once a week~
@Sexyeyes7003 жыл бұрын
@@bagel011 ......that’s exactly what I do, once a week. Last season I planted Tulip bulbs in 2 big pots in Zone 8. We have fairly mild winters, but quite a few very cold periods in January and February. I kept the pots on my patio...covered them with towels every night 29 degrees and below.....and when Spring arrived, I had 2 very gorgeous displays of Tulips. One pot was solid red with double head bulbs.... and the other pot was multi-colored. Hoping to have great results again this year with multi colors again.... and I added a different variety in a second pot this time, Ice Cream Tulips.
