I don't know what it is but some plasterers in particular seem to be a very volatile and pedantic bunch that seem to be very critical of anyone attempting to do DIY plastering. This particular attitude doesn't seem to be as common in other trades (in my opinion). Of course you're not going to get a professional finish doing it yourself and you'll probably cock things up but at least give it a go... Its a skilled trade don't get me wrong but people shouldn't be afraid to do it themselves if they feel the need to...
@tonyflynn8077
@tonyflynn8077 4 жыл бұрын
I dont think plasterers really explain why they are negative (me included). The reason is anyone can skim or float a wall and think that they have done a good job. the test is whether the floating is plumb and true and the finish has been laid on even with no cats face slack spots and the angles and abutments are clean and and straight! A freshly plastered wall can look good to the untrained eye. Just wait till you try to put wall paper up. I am all for DIY, it is just sad when I see work that homeowners have paid a lot of money for by someone who calls themselves a plasterer.

Mix the pva with hot water goes off quicker. On reskims scrim all corners and cracks first then pva 3 COATS. I personally use Bond It as pva tends to shrink and can cause shrinkage ie cracks, hence the 3 coats. Ps why not just bang on the whole lot then double back with the same mix. Throw the sponge on it, whack a straight edge on it to take off any high spots. Come back after 20 mins with a Nela or Perma, cross trowel, job done!!!!!

Do you fill the gap between the plasterboard and the painted wall? Or just skim over the gap?
@cippollino83
@cippollino83 6 жыл бұрын
Hi again I am planning to renew my walls. At the moment the are in bad condition. I am thinking to dot and dab them ( dry lining) all alls. I have never plastered. Also I could use some plasterboard a with insulation for external walls. Would it make easier to rewire the house. Or do you think is better to plaster? My worry is if I use the dry lining will be challenging to attach radiators. But I think I could use same plywood behind the plasterboards. Thank you indeed
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it's entirely up to you. I would personally plaster as dot and dab takes up a bit of space in your room due to the dab of adhesive and the plasterboard thickness. You can run your wires behind plasterboard which is less messy than chasing your walls. To make your existing walls smooth you can scrape walls back and fill holes with hardwall plaster or bonding plaster, then plaster over the top. You could use trunking for your electrics but it doesn't look as nice. It really is just up to you. Both methods work but do what ever is easier for you. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi Pouse , I want to apply a bonding coat to a chimney breast all three sides and then to coats of finish. Do I need to use angle beads for the bonding? Then that would mean repeating this for the finish plaster?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark, I tend to use one bead. When you have finished you first coat of bonding plaster, just run your finger up the edge of the bead and take a tiny amount of plaster off the bead with your finger. This will leave a small bit of bead exposed which you can plaster up to with your final coats of finishing plaster. You can also use cement or lime render instead of bonding plaster. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Hi, I need to skim the top of a window revel. The board is uneven and needs to be leveled up by about 7/8mm near the window frame, tapered down to 3mm on the inside where I have put a stop bead, is it ok to do 3 coats? Andrew
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, yes you could do 3 coats. If you do 2, and let it dry out for a few days, just PVA over it like it's an old wall and then do your 3rd coat. You don't want to go too thick in one hit as it will probably crack. Alternatively use bonding plaster or hardwall plaster (a filling plaster) to build up the thickness as it is designed to be applied thicker. Let that dry out for a day or so, then pva it, and do your 2 coats of multifinish plaster over that. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

Away to plaster around a window the old beads rusty would you sat rip it out and put in new?
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE Жыл бұрын
I think you're saying your bead is rusty, would I rip it out and replace? Yes I probably would or the rust will likely penetrate your plaster and stain the painted wall in time. Just check as it might be a render bead where the wall was cement rendered. Best of luck with it.

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 6 жыл бұрын
You can pva over a smooth plastered wall but you need it to be smooth, then plaster over as seen in the video. If you can see block work you really need to fill the low points in the wall covering the breeze block. You can do this by coating the bits you are going to fill with pva, using a filling plaster like bonding plaster or hardwall plaster over the PVA which can be applied thicker than a finishing plaster but finished smooth and flat. Then follow the steps in the video i.e. PVA wal twice and two coats of finishing plaster. Hope that helps. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi pouse, Can you tell me roughly what would be the thickness of two coat of finished plaster? Also do you need to apply any pva if your plastering over a coat of thistle hard wall on brick? Andrew
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. I would always do two coats of PVA on the brick before applying hard wall, and then when that's gone off, apply 2 coats of PVA over the hard wall before putting the final skim coat over the top. Apply multifinish plaster about 2 - 3mm on the first coat followed by another 1 - 2 mm so by the time you've finished and polished off you're looking at about 3 - 4 mm (give or take depending on the flatness of the existing wall. If you fill out a few dips it may be 5mm in places and 2 mm in others for example. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!

@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
@POUSEaroundtheHOUSE 4 жыл бұрын
It's more a case of checking it with your hands. When it stops leaving a wet finger print but can be pushed or dented is the right time. With a drop of water you can bring it back to life. Then wait another 20 mins maybe before next trowel. Doesn't always need more trowelling after that. Hope that helps.

On an ‘old’ wall, i tend to use Bluegrit. It sticks like sticky stuff, and leave a gritty surface for the pink to stick to. Messy to apply, but well worth it.

Peter - you don't plaster outside, but render either cement render or lime render depending on what your needs are. But to much to explain. I'll try and get a video up in the future. Thanks for watching.

Why were you plastering that wall? Looks perfectly fine to me 😝

To be honest, the wall was in decent nick, but the edges had been chipped away as it is on a well used landing. The home owner wanted metal angle bead to strengthen the corners as there was none in place causing the plaster to be chipped easily. So hopefully it will have another 50 years! Thanks for watching.

Never trowel across your beads even when your troweling up also fill your beads out first even before your fist coat so 3 coats on yours beads don't brush the plaster with your brush a light flick of water I usually use the water on my second trowel other wise your dragging most your plaster off if it's still a bit wet so a dry trowel polish first then ad the water on the second trowel remember never across the beads always up straight other than that he's not bad for a novice

It's all very well saying get a professional, if your lucky enough to live in a rich area where there are enough real professionals around willing to the work, even if it's a only small job. I agreed to pay a local plasterer £300 to plaster a bedroom. He turned up and decided that he needed to 'do some prep' he put neat Zinnesser DIF all over one area of the bedroom wall and stripped all the skin off the plasterboard. He then said that it would be impossible to plaster the wall so that it had to be double boarded, he dabbed the wall unevenly and left big lumps and bumps much worse than it was before, as a tape jointed wall without the skim coat. £560 to have a bedroom in my house ruined. He was driving around in a sign written van, so it wasn't that I just asked anyone. I then had to find a way of fixing it myself, an ordinary sander wasn't up to the job. After a lot of research I brought a renofix machine to grind the massive bumps out of the wall. I'm now in the process of re-skimming the last wall with the help of these videos.

Hi, great videos, how would you go about skimming a corner like this? drive.google.com/file/d/1lVuCJj-Kf-1bha2v52eor1mgraeCrNq8/view?usp=sharing also it would be great to see how you go about plastering a ceiling. Or do you have a video about this?

CT Plastering . Lol. I HATE these guys that go around showing these videos. Plastering PROFESSIONAL plastering is a totally different ball game to this DIY stuff that i see on here. No one wants to earn there stripes anymore and put the hard work in and labour and learn it from the bottom up. Theres setting out gauges, mixing consistency, wiping angles. Time between gauges. Trowels etc etc. Again i repeat. PLASTERING IS NOT A DIY TRADE!

Hi there jimjim, I understand your point, but I'm not suggesting I'm a professional or that this 10 minute video replaces a 3 year apprenticeship and time on the job. It is intended to help DIY enthusiasts that want to patch up or plaster a small wall in their own home. Some people have an interest in different trades but aren't looking to do it for a living. They just want a few of the basics and surely there's no harm in that. Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!

I have plastered my whole bedroom thanks to these videos. I don't have the money to spend on professionals who were going to charge me £600 so it was either leave the walls as they were (terrible) or do it myself. I did it myself and am pleased with the result. Now I'm going to do my lounge and hallway. By the time I'm finished I will have saved about £3000!
