Great technique and step by step instructions. I did refinishing work on acrylics and fiberglass and other hard surfaces for 17 years. I learned something new from your video about using various coatings for this type of job. One tip for you is that a heat gun can be used to heat up a spray can of coating. Heat and shake, heat and shake, when the can is warm to the hand all the way around it will provide a faster cure period for the coating. Works well in a cold environment, especially when heat lamps are not available. Using the heat gun from a distance directed at the repair will also increase the cure time for applying additional coats. Subscribed to your channel, getting ready to do the center hubs on my 2000 Tacoma. Thanks for the great video!

Great tip on the heat gun! I've also let cans sit in a bucket of hot water to heat them up.

You've saved yourself a ton of money. Prep and primer/sealer is key. GREAT WORK! Immersing the spray cans in scalding hot water increases can air pressure slightly and helps the metallic paint flow out even better. Careful with runs. Slightly dampen a rag in wax/grease remover to pull out any black paint fron where you don't want it. Cover with a big box generally reduces dust that lands on wet surfaces.

Great channel with great tips. The bloopers really help. I found that Rustoleum Ultra High Heat silver paint is a really good match for the Toyota silver on the caps. Did the job on my ‘02 4Runner 3 years ago with some Duplicolor gloss clear over the top and they’ve held up great. I don’t have the steady hand to paint the logo though. I tried Sharpie as an afterthought but it only lasted about a week.

I love using grease and wax remover too before I paint something. Rubbing alcohol is good in some situations but if you can use grease and wax, it will never give you a fish eye and it’s evaporates really well.

hi Centre caps on as thats how the wheels/vehicle came from factory . With out caps just cheapens the look ie unfinished . As u have discovered many times good condition centre caps can cost as much as the wheels especially when they are rare . Good job What I have discovered is spay can gloss does not last as long as using spraygun and 2k paints clears etc . Yes the only way to do wheels is beadblast / chemical dip first .

Good video! I suggest wearing rubber gloves once you get to the cleaning stage. The oils from your hands can cause the paint to lift or have fish eyes. It could still show up several months from now. They look really good though.

THANK YOU!! I followed your instructions exactly and got excellent results on my center caps. I went with Black caliper paint and DupliColor Matte Clear Wheel Paint. Great idea to use caliper paint! I love the way it looks and it makes perfect sense to use on wheel caps for the extra durability and chip resistant features. Would it make sense to follow the same approach on the grill and trim as well? I know they sell trim paint that has flex to it but I liked the way this combo looks so much that I'd to extend to more of the plastic on the 4Runner unless there are risks. Also I noticed that you went straight to primer sealer after the adhesion promoter. Is Primer sealer = Primer + Sealer or is there a primer step that I missed? Lastly I tried this approach on my emblem using Dupli-Color MC200 Red Metal Cast Anodized Color + DupliColor Gloss Clear Wheel Paint but I just couldn't get it to shine. I was ok that my paint job didn't have the same bright red chrome look as the spray can cap but I was really surprised at the dull finish. Looks like a Satin finish at best and no where near the high gloss finish that I was expecting from a gloss clear coat made for wheels. Do you have any advice on what I could try different?
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 2 жыл бұрын
Their trim paint is very forgiving when applying, but I think the caliper paint would be more durable in the long run. Primer sealer is meant to be used over regular primer, because often with body work there can be multiple colors of primer. Primer sealer goes over top to make it uniform before applying color. Sometimes splotchy primers can show through on lighter colors. I have used the Metalcast in the past but never clear coated over it. Was the final coat of clear a wet coat? If it came out with a matte finish instead of gloss, I would try using a rag and cutting compound with your finger and see if you can polish it up.
@IGJSarasota
@IGJSarasota 2 жыл бұрын
@@6thGearGarage Yes, my final coat of clear was a wet coat and it still came out looking matte. I followed your advice and buffed it out and and reapplied another clear wet coat and it looks great! It started to shine after buffing alone but I hit it with clear coat for good measure. Thank you!!

These are just small center caps- they didn't use much paint. I painted the wheels in a separate video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hV6TqX-EqdWmj9E For the 5 wheels, I probably used about 2.5 cans of the Self Etch primer, 1-2 of the filler, 1 of the sealer, 2 of the DC Silver, 2 of the VHT Silver, and 5-6 cans of clear total.

DISH SOAP FOR THE DETAILING Painting the tops of the caps with the black paint first, and then after it has dried going over the detailing with some neat Dish Soap is another method of completing the detailing. A couple of coats of the Dish Soap, (up to you how many), and letting each coat dry thoroughly. Then spray on the coats of silver. When you are satisfied that you have enough coats of silver on, leave the caps to dry overnight. The longer the better. Then allow the caps to soak in some luke-warrn water and the Dish Soap will float free leaving the black detailing in place. Because all the top of the cap was first sprayed black, the detailing 'troughs' will be fully covered at the bottom and on their sides Once dry apply as many protective clear coats that you wish.
