How to Play 40K Casually as a Competitive Player

I tend to disagree with the philosophy on the terrain layout, as to me the asymmetric aspect of terrain in conjunction with a narrative battle setup can shift the game in different ways. The more experienced player just has to be mindful to take the more challenging start position, but I agree with your list building, I've passed this on to my home group of newer players so they can review their list building ideas.

The telemon and aquilon are my favourite units of all the custodes i love playing these guys so much, not much of a competitive player by any regard but playing against optimised lists is still always a good time for me as its up to me to adapt my playstyle to overcome insurmountable odds or strong units on the table top. You are always gonna lose a game here and there anyway. Might as well have fun losing too.

I think a lot of this breaks on avarge income. The more, relativly, an army cost the bigger problem of "bad/unfun" army becomes. And GW are loaded with trap units, even entire armies. Trying to convice some to not play "the best" is really hard, when getting an army is 12-18 months of saving up. It us also hard to convince people to p,ay "what tgey like" or to buy bad stuff on top of the good stuff they already have. I would love to live in a place where getting a new w40k army is a time thing, and not a money thing. But l don't live in a such a place , so the casual lists often look A LOT like tournament lists, sometimes even exactly the same. The custodes player may not have FW units, the ork player may not have the 1500$ optimised list, but you can bet your ass that the csm player bought 3 rhinos, 3 units of csm and 3 lords alongside forgefiends and oblits. He just uses regular cultists, and maybe AOS units, instead of the super expensive mutants and Council.

Generally I use the WTC layouts which you can find on their website
