I was born and raise here in the mississippi Delta.. I been playing guitar for about 20 years now. Down here the blues isn't just the music, it's got it's own soul. The weird tunes.. the funky finger picking. the steel slide on an old dobro.. That's just how it's been here all my life. my dad said nothing has changed in his life time either. Lessons like this give me a bit of hope someone somewhere else may keep playing like this when we're gone. Thanks for helping keep our culture alive dude. You get a thumbs up from me. Just remember.. The music has a soul. dont taint it. Play it with feeling :D

+PwnyDwn excellent advice. Play with feeling! This music is raw and so impactful and hopefully us players from outside the delta help spread the spirit of the music too.

Um...actually, saying "us players from outside the delta" suggest that this school of music comes from the delta. When in fact it comes from the hill country. Just saying...

I don't think Hill COuntry Music gets near the attention it should in blues conversations. Some great artists in this style. Very cool that you got to experience it right there where it started.

Hi John. Really I should join your upper thing. This lesson takes me back to 1976 when I was 20 when I found a used Arhoolie Mississippi Delta Blues Volume 2 Album with R.L Burnside on one side with Rosa Hill on one cut PORK"BEANS, then R.L.'s first recorded classic songs by George Mitchell a folklorist from Atlanta in 1966. On the other side was Joe Callicot who lived near R.L., but while R.L. only played in E, maybe 1 song in A in standard tuning, then switch to open G Spanish tuning he called it, Joe who I sadly never got to meet, or play with played songs in standard G I remember. Could be that's all he played in G. His music is more lyrical like Piedmont Blues like John Cephas than R.L.'s, or Junior Kimbrough. Though from a hard driving Hill Country sound in standard E R.L. in Open G had depending on what he played could have a similar sound as Joe's. R.L. who was heavily influenced by Mississippi Fred McDowell considered Delta, and Hill Country Blues the same thing. Mr. McDowell was from Como some miles from the Delta, but when I first began listening to him mid 70's he was always referred to as a Delta Bluesman. I don't think the term Hill Country Blues was used at that time. I toured with Robert Belfour thru Germany for a couple weeks. Had to get lower Harps to be with him as he tuned down a half step. Whatever you call the music believe it to be America's version of Classical Music with Blue Soul. It's really fun to get down that R.L. groove he used on different songs like Jumper On the Line, .44 Pistol Blues, and a few others. Hard to get, but you can then apply it to other keys besides E. It's possible if the legal stuff gets right R.L. will have new recordings out we're both on next year. I've got my fingers, and toes crossed. If you're interested you can find us in various you tube videos, or on MC Records Acoustic Stories where along with Harp I play uncredited guitar on KINDHEARTED WOMAN, and MEET ME IN THE BOTTOM R.L's version completely different than Howling Wolf. I just had to listen to him switch chords follow him that way. He changed when he wanted. I'm also on WELL...WELL...WELL..a collection of recordings from my old shotgun house in New Orleans R.L made for me to practice to, and songs from gigs. If you want check out my You Tube channel Jon Beckley Morris. I play mostly Harp, teach play, some old style piano, and want to play more guitar on it. Thanks John for what you do. Very inspiring.

I was first exposed to this style of blues through my guitarist best bud who recruited me as a harp player for his band a few years ago. Before, I had no idea the differences. Now that I've evolved to multi instruments including guitar, I truly appreciate these videos. Thanks so much.
