The part about bar accommodations (being able to see above the counter), it gave my an idea of a tavern in which they served them from a separate, shorter bar, and when a gnome goes up to the regular bar, the server could say, 'We don't serve your kind here!... We serve your kind over there!"

One point I'd add about playing a gnome: with their formidable intellect, unquenchable curiosity, and tinkering culture, gnomes tend to be hobbyists, and progress along class/background lines that allow them to develop their hobbies. Work with your GM to determine the role your character's toolkits can play in the campaign. Maybe your gnome is an avid naturalist, collecting and cataloguing rare plants or animals. Maybe your gnome is an experimental alchemist, a brewer of potions, or a nefarious concocter of poisons and narcotics. Maybe your gnome is a dedicated archaeologist, or they have a passion for collecting antiques. Maybe they are a jeweller, searching for the gems needed to complete their masterwork. Maybe they are a master cartographer, anxious to fill in the blank spaces on a map. A hobby can be a fun conduit to bring a character to life.

Great point! My gnome is a ranger. She collects little tokens from her quarries (feathers, teeth, scales, even a hag's lock of hair, haha) and makes trinkets and stuff with those, then she gifts them to people. My dm has allowed me to make charms for my fellow party members enclosing a cure wounds that triggers when they go unconscious. It took so much time and money, but was totally worth it. Dm is an angel and has made it so that they bring the character back just to 1hp, but it's rechargeable in seven days. The characters think they have to tell a joke for it to recharge, though. because... gnomes, right? 😂 Said charms literally ended up saving everyone's life during a big battle. I'm very proud of this little hobby of her. It's just for fun most of the times, but it really adds to the character and the gaming experience. 🌹

My character in the first real D&D campaign I ever played was a half- gnome illusionist. (His parents were both wizards, if you're wondering how that worked.) I had quite a bit of fun with Kelridan Enizu. Among other things, he invented the hand grenade using tankards, black powder, ball bearings, and candle wax. (Prestidigitation works wonders for lighting fuses, and mage hand is great for making deliveries.) Some of my favorite NPCs I've ever encountered have to be the Gogli brothers. Gogli, The Other Gogli, and so on... I think there were something like 17 of those similarly named gnomish brothers in total. Gogli was a fairly straight-laced golemancer, while The Other Gogli, whose blacksmith shop was across the street, was a hyperactive, mile-a-minute-talking nut, with a custom steam forge and a shop that was warded against buckets. (It's a long story.) The rest of them got significantly less "stage time," but the mere fact of their existence lent additional hilarity to the situation. I can still picture my gm's twitchy fidgeting and darting eyes when he played The Other Gogli. "I'm Gogli. No, I'm The Other Gogli. Gogli's an $&=*$#%"

Gnome are my to-go race for a thief :P My last gnome was a CG Arcane Trickster, and it was extremely annoying for anyone else at the table, always inventing new nicknames for them, and collecting eccentric stuff and pets, while pickpocketing everything that moves, looking for strange trinkets and crap. I have never played a gnome personally but i did create one loosely based on Filius Flitwick from harry potter. I figured he would be an interesting base for a gnome, somewhat excitable but very knowledgeable in his field, willing to experiment with his magic and enchanting various things that might not be necessary but amuse him. And at the same time a rather fierce combatant when he needs to be.

Why are gnomes and dwarves given those accents anyway? Gnomes came from a Swiss Alchemy Book and Dwarves are mostly from Germanic and Norse myths. 02:11 Gnomes used to not be associated with mechanists. Dragolance did that first with their gnomes. Ironically to make them "different" from the other gnomes that existed in RPGs a the time. Only for them to (ironically again) to become the norm instead as time passed by. 12:46 Or your gnome is from a different part of the world. Or was raised by a different race. Of course you should talk to the GM about this, but we shouldn't pigeonhole either (See above comment on how gnomes used to not be a "mechanic" race).

Gnomes are awesome. Forest gnomes are my favourite, but I love them all. Underrated. I'm playing a tiny forest gnome ranger who goes by Willow. She works a monster hunter (think a tiny female Van Helsing). The things she hunts are all sorts of monsters, be it fiends, undead, fey or humanoids. She's a fairly unusual hunter of sorts, but has garnered some respect from her peers for her in depth knowledge of the wilds, its inhabitants and how to survive in it. Plus, she can speak to animals and cast illusions which is a great feat for someone in this line of work!

I am currently playing a CG gnome bard nicknamed "Motpassant" which is the French for "passing word" and a play on word with the writer Maupassant (I am quite fond of play on words :D). I am playing him more as prankster and an entertainer who always comes up with crazy plans, pranks, tricks and ideas. I mean, we have a female half-orc barbarian who is persuaded to be a diva despite having a -1 charisma malus, so the first time she tried to sing, my gnome asked her to kneel to see what was wrong with her voice just for the pleasure to say "well, I see what's wrong, would you look at that !" then use instrument invocation to pull a lute out of the barbarian throat ^^. My advice : play them like Tex Avery characters, it is so much fun x)

One big consideration for me, as you stated, is the disadvantage and advantages of being very short. We might need help traveling, can’t quite reach the counter to pay their merchant or pick something up. Might need specialized gear and armor to be made. As a gnome I’m not as strong as a dwarf and can’t pick up large items or carry as much.

I actually play as a Gnome named Gett G. Nomed (look closely at the name) and he was a Bard. His instruction to the rest of the party was a group contacting a Gunslinger, a Rogue Theif, and a Warlock walking through a forest on a island known to be home for criminals. When they get deep in the woods they hear banjo music from the trees and at somepoint a apple hits one of them. All of a sudden after a small panic a very old Gnome sits on a branch, banjo in hand. He then tells the group they got gnomed and joins the bandit Heroes as the moral compass.

I'm currently playing my first ever D&D campaign, and I went with a Forest Gnome Sorcerer. He is Dellemunn Bramble, and he had his power forced upon him when he touched a dying blue dragon deep in his home forest of the Bramblepatch. Though I haven't gotten the chance to play a campaign yet (being new to the game, and due to exams week, pretty busy and stressful, and the closest Adventurer's League is a good car ride away), I'm really interested in Volo's Kobold PC race. Though they are listed to have a bunch subraces, do these subraces have any unicity to them? I can't seem to find anything supporting it, so I reckon they're just aesthetic?
@theDMLair6 жыл бұрын
Planetesimal I just looked up the playable kobold race in Volo's, and there aren't any subraces for kobolds there. It just the one stat block. It looks pretty sweet, though. You would get advantage on attack rolls when allies are within 5 feet of the enemy you're attacking.
@ryzelk6 жыл бұрын
Planetesimal The kobold is generally a low-level monster that the party beats up in the dungeon. While there may be regional differences and the possibility for sub-races, Wizards of the Coast simply gave us a few "monstrous playable races." If you are looking into joining an Adventurer's League group, I'm not sure if the monstrous races are allowed, though I don't know for sure.
@ahoy10146 жыл бұрын
If I'm not mistaken, Adventurers League allows for the Player's Handbook, plus one additional book (PHB+1 for short), meaning you're allowed to for example run PHB+XGE (Xanathar's Guide to Everything), and thus also PHB+VGM.
@theDMLair6 жыл бұрын

Late to this video, but I recently decided to explore gnomes a bit more. I created a character that is a forge domain cleric of Flandal Steelskin who oversees the ethical use of ore and gemstones. He is obligated to travel into a gnomish mine with the party in search of a stolen artifact that grants the user the ability to locate precious metals under the ground. Turns out it was stolen by a secret cult of Urdlen worshippers, the evil gnome god of greed and destruction. They seek to destroy the artifact in hopes of acquiring power and dominion over the gnome society they are in. I think it’ll be interesting. Gnomes actually can have a lot more depth if they are explored more.

I love playing halflings and gnomes for various reasons including the role playing of an extremely small sized character. I'm currently playing as a gnome ranger (pun unintended) and I mostly portray him as a confident guy who doesn't really know much about the world, since he's lived in a forest burrow all his life before a great tragedy happened that made him leave. As a result, he's got PTSD but he tries to hide it underneath the happy Gnomish exterior. So in a sense, I'm playing against the Gnomish stereotype by playing it to hide some deep rooted issues.

I dunno, I will be playing a gnome druid and am IRL only 5ft 😆 . Used to living small in a big world.

I have a Forest Gnome Druid and a Rock Gnome Paladin. The Druid, Brocc, is a Neutral Good boy that loves nature and loves using nature to play pranks on his party members. The Paladin, Warryn, is a brave Lawful Neutral boy who swore to Heimidall that he would protect those in need.

I made a gnome barbarian in my latest game. He was never that good at building things but when you absolutely need to break everything in the room, accept no substitutes.

I wanna play a Barbarian Rock Gnome who tinkers crazy weapons to rage with. I just haven't found an experienced enough DM to improv the results.

Why not just let the player do it but their background is that of an orphan raised by another race? That way that person gets to have fun and you can keep them mysterious. It then could become a running side-quest in the background of the campaign for the pc to find out more about them.

my current character is a gnome but I think I may change him for a different gnome, part of this is because I actually don't think I went weird enough. My gnome could easily just be a short human

For obvious reasons, the best gnomes are bards.

I really dislike gnomes but this video changed my perspective on them. I still dislike them but I have a better understanding of them.

Often it is more the person behind the character than the actual race of the character that determine our view of that race. (What I am trying to say is that some races appeal more to rotten players, than others.)
