I much prefer the final option, with the exception that the person sitting to the right of the empty chair selects their incoming pass from the top of the wall that would be the one to pick from after the Charleston. They take 3 tiles and if any is a Joker they replace it and pick another (maybe we're too trusting). This way discarded tiles from the final optional across exchange are picked up sooner than from the wall in front of the empty chair.

Yes, that is a good option too. I have seen many people play that way. I prefer to play by NMJL rules, so no Charleston when it is 3 player. Thank you for offering another option.!

How do you decide where the dummy wall will be placed? We've always built the walls before knowing who would be East. The first time this put the dummy wall to the left of East. When dealing tiles for each players hand, we weren't sure if we should use tiles from the dummy for this because tiles would be needed for the Charleston. We decided to skip to the next players wall so the dummy wall would be left whole. The way you're seated in the video, the 3rd player to be East would also have the dummy wall to their left.

The Charleston during 3 player game is not part of National Mah Jongg league rules. You would have each play take their tiles in the deal and just begin play. No Charleston. I would not be to advise you on where the dummy wall should be placed. There is no standard, this would be a table rule. The rule should be decided as a group how they would like to play with 3 players and where the dummy wall is. Everyone could chime in on this but again it's your group personal preference.

@@mshappi yes you can play two player Set up games as you would for four player. Each wall comes out after one is drained. Per NMJL rules there is no Charleston. There is another variation called Siamese Mah Jongg. Weee each of the two player plays two hands. In the last described Charleston why not 7 rows of three to include the optional?

You absolutely could do that but I feel it gives that person across an unfair advantage of getting another set of three new tiles. Once extra new pick for them. Remember these are table rules, so whatever your table agrees upon. Enjoy!
