There is another tie breaker in the rules. You both plant a tree and after 5 years whoever has the taller tree wins.

Best explanation video I have watched. Thank you. I just have one doubt about the 1 trumps 8 rule. Does this only take effect when two players have each of those cards in their hand, or in their arboretum as well? For instance, if my arboretum path for a specific tree begins with the 5 and ends with the 8, but another player has same species and their path begins with 1 and ends in 4?

No this rule about the 1 trumping the 8 applies only to cards in hand that will determine who scores the color

Artwork is very beautiful and promisees a relaxed game. But the gameplay looks too complex and uber "math-y" for a Catan-die-hards in my family. At every turn you count numbers like hell. How to design the arboretum (with math i mind), what card to play vs. keep in your hand (with counting in mind). Instant put off.
