I'm really fascinated by this newly discovered (for me) world of board games. Haven't played one in probably in man many years, but am motivated to do so now. Such a great social activity.

Thank you for actually going through the scoring process and showing not only how you score but also demonstrating how it is recorded on the score sheet. For some reason that was the part I was not able to wrap my brain around, and also the part most other videos omit. I've had this game for about a month and have watched several videos. Can't wait until I can find someone I can coerce into playing it with me.

Just a note that Dan Cassar has announced a small rule change that will go in future printings of the rules: "At the start of play, all discard piles are empty." He did this because it was felt by many that there was an advantage to going first, and this was decided to be the best way to negate that. This is posted by Cassar in the rules thread for Arboretum on BGG.

I am so glad I saw this video. I was on the fence about this game, but now own it and played it this weekend. Absolutely love this game, the hand management is super fun and crunchy enough.

I played this game about at the same time as this video was recorded. Next year we will know who won the tie.

Nice video as always. The first time I played this my head really hurt and I felt as many do that it might just not be my "cup of tea". But I plodded on and have now played several games with my family, and would offer that, like ice skating, the very first few times you try it, it is painful. But as with many other games, once you learn the structure of the game and figure out some ways to capitalize on the limitations, it becomes a competition among the players to determine who can manage their hand the best. I submit that, for me, the first 2-3 rounds is pulling cards to try to develop some depth in at least one suit. Throw down whatever in those first 2-3 rounds to throw careful observers off your trail. Wait until you have a few cards in one suit to start laying out your grand path. Induce others to clog up their limited hand capacity with cards to block you in a suit you are not collecting. Pay attention to the draw deck getting shallow, the game can end sooner than you might think. Don't feel compelled to lay a grand path, lay a couple of long basic paths, if you can, especially if you can safely lay 1's or 8's. And count the cards, count the cards, count the cards!! Your mileage may vary. I have come to really admire the simple brutality of this game. My mother in law shows no hesitation in a 4p game snagging the top 2 cards from a discard pile to grab the 2nd card if she thinks it will block my scoring. That's when I started trying to throw out junk to send her off into the weeds. I thinks she's still rustling around out there now.... :)

I love this game. Love the agonizing decisions you have to make. The more you play then you really start getting creative with your paths. The only bummer is it doesn't click for most players right away.

In order to get the bonus points for each card in a run, you need at least 4 of exclusively the same color in that run. The wording from the rules: "Score 1 additional point for each card in the path if it is made up of at least 4 cards and they are *all the same color*." Dave realizes this and corrects this at around the 8 minute mark.

Great game. Have played it nearly 10 times-each time, just as good as the first.

If you do play a three player game, you remove two suits before starting. In a two player game, you remove four suits, so it balances somewhat for the different player counts.

This game is a good reminders that sometimes the most simple games are the most enjoyable, particularly for casual gamers. That said, it's interesting they used a regular poker deck as the base of their game, instead of creating a game with tree illustrations and card effects (like a Magic or Pokemon TCG)

Just like the card game Parade....we play 3-5 games and then combine the totals from those to see who the winner is...just 1 game played will have a little more to do with luck of the draw.

In order to get the extra points for all trees in a path of the same type, there must be at least 4 cards in the path.

If Nikki had played her 7 below the 5 of the same suit instead of next to it, could she have scored two paths--the one that's all the same suit and another through her two jacarandas?
@JorWat254 жыл бұрын
Three years too late, but no. You can only score one path per species.
@blackhat49683 жыл бұрын
@@JorWat25 Thanks for this reply, I wondered bout Mike having 2 paths he could of scored his Lilacs, [45:09] 1-4 all lilacs and 1-4 mix of lilacs and Royal Poinsett's. Did not realize you could only score 1 path.

Rules mistake... There are no cards in the discard pile during setup. This used to be the case in the first printing of the game, but was changed officially by ZMan and the designer. It simplifies the game and removes a bit of the first player advantage by letting him have less choice. Theres a thread on bgg about this made by the designer himself, and the change is in the latest ruleset, downloadable from ZMan.

There was rumor of the reprint coming out in July or August, so since we are at the start of September now, I am guessing it should be back any second now? I'm getting that info from a post from Dan Cassar on the BGG forums.

I enjoy watching your play through episodes but this by far has been the driest game explanations after the rules intro. Watching everyone look at each other's cards minute after minute made me realize I wasn't watching any game play but rather just facial expressions and banter. I don't believe it is your fault because of the strategy in the game to conceal your hand and objective to score points. Unfortunately, the majority of the time is watching your faces (decision making time) without any explanation of what's going on or why cards are being drawn/played. When cards are visible it's so brief that you can't see what's being picked/laid/strategy. Suggestion: go into separate rooms, use a online simulator (so you can't hear each other unless you hit the mic button), play normally so each of you can explain to the audience what they are doing and why (i.e. keeping a 1/8/suit in their hand to gain points at the end / explaining rules) so the audience feels they are in the game and learning. Trust me, I like your authentic delivery of games but this one has no substance to watch past the rules. Hopefully this comment will help future episodes with this game type. Please don't stop making more content.

Wow this is the 1st game you have played on here that I can honestly say looks to be over complicated for a small short card game. Totally not for me or my game group.
