This was the first wargame I ever purchased, back in the late 70s. Still have it, though the box is torn up.

As long as the game inside is still good, you are ok. Does War at Sea still get played much?

Damage Effects - Ship damage affects the ship's speed. Subtract the damage taken from stated speed to get the current/adjusted/true speed, speed min can go lower than 1. If damage taken equals the ship's max damage, that ship's gunnery factors goes to 1(if ship is CV, air factors are lost).

Thank you for pointing that one out! I thought I had covered it, but must have missed it!

A simple game but heaps of fun. Now I want to dig my copy out and have a game, maybe when the COVID restrictions are lifted? I read you're going to be going through Victory in the Pacific; great... I just recently picked this one up and have never played it, so maybe I'll pick up a few tips when you put up your video.

American Ships - can only be used in the North Atlantic sea zone. The Ship Release Rule was changed with updated rules(old rule is the straight 6 roll, new rule is to give each ship a +1 for each new turn - ex. turn4 is 6 needed, turn5 is 5 needed, turn6 is 4 needed, etc).

Ah, that's interesting! The entrance rule is strict in the original Avalon Hill rules - in theory, you might never get ANY American ships in the game. I like to updated rule better.

Airstrikes - Only one die can be roll for each ship being attacked in a sea zone. Ex. If player has one CV with 2 air factors and their LBA in that sea area, that player can attack up to 5 ships. If there are 4 enemy ships only, one air factor/attack is lost. Also - when it comes to port air attacks, only LBA factors can be used(CVs cannot participate).

That last part about the CVs is very good to point out. Thank you so much for all your comments! We, and all other players new to the game, appreciate the help!

Uboats - There is a max limit of 7 Uboats total available per turn. So just note - that there are more Uboats listed on turn track BUT you do not get them unless the axis player has taken losses from earlier turns.
@LegendaryTactics

Yes, in the tabletop simulator module there are only seven U-boat counters, so even we were not going to make that mistake :)

@@LegendaryTactics but some players might use the copy & paste function which is available in TTS to make more Uboat counters, so just a note of my comment of the 7 max rule(also, there is an optional rule to get as many as you can get as listed)

Fair point! I didn't think of that.

FWIW @15:30 or so, for a speed roll to succeed, you have to roll LESS THAN the speed factor. So a ship with speed of 3 only has a 33% chance of success, not 50%. Also I don't think you made it clear that control flags mean opponents can not move through that sea area. This has significant impact on play as the Allied player can blockade the Germans by getting control flags in Barents and North Seas, etc. @27:00 It doesn't seem right that pursuing ships relinquish control, maybe check that rule again?
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the clarifications! You are right on the first two things you mentioned - I thought I had covered them in the conversation but must have glossed over them. Thank you! With regards to the last one, about pursuing ships relinquishing control, I am referring to rule 12.4 and 12.5 (at least, this is my interpretation). I thought giving up control and the POCs might be the penalty for pursuers having the opportunity to run down weaker ships that are trying to escape. The wording is a little bit vague there, but now that I read it really closely, I can see how the rules might allow pursuing ships the opportunity for control and POCs as long as they win and aren't sunk/disabled during the pursuit.

@@LegendaryTactics I don't have WAS available but I do have Victory in the Pacific which is of course based on WAS. Can't find anything in there about changing the status of patrolling ships should they decide to pursue a retreating battlegroup, and since there's no mechanism for getting living ships back home except through "return to port" (which happens immediately after checking for control and placing flags), the rule seems pretty clear. Thanks again for highlighting the old chestnuts. I played VITP a lot more than WAS and while you're likely to poke around in some other genre before returning to naval area control, it would be great to see you take a look at one of AH"s most popular titles!
