Well, sadly I don't have a cello (yet), but I'm thinking of renting one from this nearby luthier, where I always go for my violin. The sound is so deep and soothing. Hopefully, I can play this piece too one day :)

Thanks for you wonderful, up-beat lesson on this song! I would like to know what in your opinion would be the best mpoderate-priced cello bow? Thanks for your good work.
@CelloCoach6 жыл бұрын
Moderately priced for which level? For students, a bow between 150 - 350 US$ would suffice as moderate. Your luthier would be the best place to ask these questions, Jim.

Hey Jonathan, just a question... in this music and in the video where you play the whole thing, you stretch to a C# in measure 22. In other sheet music and videos, I’ve seen that played as a C natural. Just wondering if one is more correct or is either ok?
@CelloCoach4 жыл бұрын
Yup, that was a mistake! Carrying over the C@c after the point d'orgue was not written so I need to leave a pinned comment on that

How long (years) need you / a "normal" student cello lesson to start with the Bach prelude?
@CelloCoach6 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, you can begin immediately after having knowledge the fundamental knowledge of how a string instrument makes sound. Like I said in the video, you play the chords simultaneously, like a guitar, prior to every legato. We seek the wood, not the string. We play the inner note of the chord more consciously. We martelé and legato. We string cross with bar chords, shift through half to 4th positions, knowing the 2 octave G-major and D-Major scales, as well as chromatic fingering. Then we apply phrasing and our own personal touch. You would have to define "normal" so I can give you real life examples of adult students who have played every part of Suite 1, in an upcoming video on this subject. Great question!

why are the a notes not being played in measure 35?
@CelloCoach6 жыл бұрын
Right, good question Danj126. We do play all the notes, yes, though when learning the string crossings, my advice it to learn the 2nd string (D/Re) notes first, then add the 1st string (A/La) notes afterwards.

Just started lessons and watching your channel in between lessons. Great stuff. Can you tell me why you rosin link at Amazon is for a rosin that says violin, viola, cello when in your earlier videos you said to get "cello only" rosin. Thanks.
@CelloCoach5 жыл бұрын
Good catch! I use the Oliv Evah and have been doing so since a cellist recommended it to me. There are unspoken, sort of "in-the-know" things musicians share amongst one another. This rosin - paired with a cello like mine and strings and playing style and bow quality - has been reliable for now 10 years.

Hi Jonathan, I really enjoy your cello tutorials. One question, why do you have that cloth on your cello?
@CelloCoach6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Nader. The cloth is to protect the varnish from transpiration.
