Great lesson, thanks! Any chance you can explain what is meant when you say that 6th was technically a double flat 7th? I somewhat understand the numbering but don't understand what the framework is. Bit confused as to the difference between the numbering in scales and the numbering in chords and what relation the key has and what key / scale we is being referred to when counting the numbers in the chord - I assume the key (C Major?) is constant but I'm a bit miffed re. the scales when playing different chords and whether the melody then takes shape in the scales of the chords... when you (and others) say things like it's technically a double flat / double sharp it highlights the lack of understanding I have in this area. Any explanation of direction to the right place would be appreciated a lot!

The chords are all from C major. A is the 6th of the C major scale, but as he's playing a diminished 7th chord, the 7 (which is B in the C major scale) is double-flat, so it goes down to A. A diminished 7th chord is the root (C), flat 3rd (Eb), flat 5th (GB) and double-flat 7th (Bbb, which is the same as A). You can find this on wikipedia by searching for "diminished 7th chord".
