Man I've been playing since I was 9 years old, now I'm 21, I've always played as pure soul hobby and until now I've never had study the theory behind music more than pentatonic (because your vids), two years ago I started to improvise over basic progressions and watched almost all your videos about blues improvisation and the different scales and when to use them. Also I've learned some solos of Pink Floyd too thanks to your vids. Now recently I started to listen the recorded jams of Jimi Hendrix and wanted to learn something related with him (cause his solos and riffs were pure power of feeling). Searched a lot of videos on youtube but no one I feel like teaching the feel on the guitar, just teaching riffs. Now I found this video and I want to thank you for giving us a peace of your soul style surfing that guitar, cause well, your teaching another one's song but your playing with your own feelings, and Marty, I've learned so much of how to feel the guitar thanks to you. In these 10+ years I've been playing and searching tabs and videos in the internet, now I totally consider you the greatest teacher of KZbin Videos, in my opinion you had a plus in your lessons, and it is your surfing style of feelings in that sweet guitar. Its known that the most rewarded profession in soul in this life is of those who have the spirit and the vocation of teaching others, and sure you are one of them man. Thanks for all of your lessons.

This is a really great and detailed lesson, thanks! I have one observation, especially in regard to praciticing: We hear music 'on the timeline' - meaning we start at the beginning which seems obvious. But what happens here in the lesson is that by always going back to the beginning and adding a few new bars then - actually you end up playing the very first bars way more often than you will play the middle and ending sections of the song. And there is a danger then that you'll be way more familiar with the beginning but maybe struggling with the end. This is NOT a critique of the teaching style here, just something that maybe is not so obvious and might help with mastering this great piece of music.
@autocrow6 жыл бұрын
I can play these Hendrix style chords, but can barely reach them. I can imagine how much easier they would be with reaaally long fingers. The intros where you play are always amazing!

I really appreciate this one. There were a couple parts that I learned wrong and this has straightened me out. Plus, I’ve loved John Mayer’s cover of this and the way you taught the chorus focuses on the parts of Hendrix’s performance he obviously plucked out.

This has always been my absolute favorite Hendrix song. Thank you for doing this lesson! It is also nice to hear of someone else that has trouble with using their thumb over the top. I have practiced and practiced the technique but I still trouble getting the notes to ring with my thumb over the top. It is extremely frustrating to have some of the songs I love the most (Bold as Love, Little Wing, Lenny by SRV) all hinge on a technique that gives me so much trouble.
@chrisnoodley4395 жыл бұрын
Dannie, for at least the A chords parts you can ring out the open A string instead of using the thumb. One other thing you can do is get the Thumb hooked on the string to ring the note then get your fingers to do the parts on the higher strings. I broke my thumb years ago and cannot hold my left hand in the normal way. My thumb is mostly rolled around the neck. I can still play barre chords normally but have to use my thumb a lot because of it being a little weak. The trick is to time the thumbed note. This is what I do, I hit the thumbed note with my other fingers pointed straight down. Once the thumbed note rings out I quickly play the other parts without my thumb on the e string. You have to be quick, but it is totally do able.

This is actually the first song I ever learned from Jimi back when I was 12. Always loved this one. My neighbor was jamming it one day and I was hooked on it. I locked myself up for days trying to learn it. My neighbor across the street was this older kinda drunk guy who was always there visiting his girlfriend. He came over one day when I was sitting outside and he taught me the song over many lessons. I do my own to it now. Check out the Jimi Hendrix experience deluxe reissue. There’s an amazing version of Jimi jamming it with no vocals in the studio.

Fantastic lesson Marty, I picked up guitar at in the middle of covid and always wanted to learn how to play. I've learnt exclusively from KZbin and mainly from your videos and I feel like this is the lesson which has really tied it all together for me regarding the theory behind hendrix with the major and minor pentatonic scale embellishments and the triads and inversions which make up the chords used. Thanks a million for what you do mate!
@43vert4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the lesson Marty. It's been decades since I played. Back in the day we wore out LP's in an attempt to learn things, this is so simple. I always felt my hands were too big (long fingers) to become a good guitar player, now they're finally an asset. You've made this an efficient use of my time, but what's more it's now enjoyable to hear something resembling the final result. I have to look for more Hendrix when I'm finished with this one as the style rewards long fingers.
