Perfect tutorial. At first I was screaming “tell me what finger goes where” but soon enough it all fell into place. This is one of my favorite songs of all time and I thought it would be beyond reach because of the idiosyncratic strumming and the picked bits running under it, but you made it all come together. I will be playing this to the end of my days, or at least until my real life begins.

Hi there, glad I could help in some way! 👍

This has helped a ton for sure, but the picked bits are giving me trouble. I am having a hard time making them sound right, and making them fit where they need to go. Could you show us which fingers are picking which strings and their order? Thank you, and I hope you got over COVID quickly.
@myturningpoint14 күн бұрын
Hi this will entirely depend on 'how' you play the song. But if you play pick and fingers or entirely with fingers like I do, I use pretty strict fingering myself, of 3rd finger on the high E string, middle finger on B string and 1st finger on G string. I just picked the guitar up (not played the song in months) and it pretty much always the high E is picked first and the descend down to the B string etc. But again, this is an idiosyncratic song that is unique really to each player. As I've stated before, I think its a mistake to approach this as trying to play 'exactly' what's on the record as you're not Colin Hay and you don't have his muscle memory and picking/strumming idiosyncrasies. Yes you can get close, but I don't even attempt to try and play it like Colin does as for a start he plays hybrid style with pick and fingers whereas I play with just fingers. Other than that, I would strongly recommend a program called 'Transcribe' - www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/overview.html amazing piece of software that allows you to play an audio file and slow it down by any amount you want. You can also change pitch as well as slow it down. I use it all the time and used it to learn and practice this song (as well as many other songs!) I don't think doing additional little video's to this would be helpful in the long run as it would be difficult to link them and I do not have the ability to modify existing uploads. I hope that helps, use your ears, slow the original version down if you can and practice it sloooooow and then bring the speed up and remember that a 100% perfect copy isn't necessarily the right approach with this song.

Love the tuition Thanku so much I am having trouble with the last verse and fitting in the words of "it's just that times are lean" ? Is there an alternative xtra note /chord there ?
@myturningpoint4 ай бұрын
Hi Dan, no the 3 verses are exactly the same with regards to the guitar part. What you'll find is that the first and second verse there is a vocal 'gap' on that last G chord that hammers on the Am7 shape with fingers 1 & 2. Whereas in the 3rd verse he sings through it with the line you mention. I would strongly advise you focus on the guitar part and ensure you can play along to the original song as just the guitar part and then once you've got the guitar down, start adding in the vocal. If you are trying to do both at the same time you might be throwing yourself off as your not ensuring you have each 'instrument' down and correct (hence you asking if there are extra chords/notes which suggests to me you have not focused on the guitar part and played along to the song with just the guitar) I hope that helps? Enjoy the journey! 👍😊

hello sir nice playing, is there a tab from you personally available? i looked on the tabs on ultimate guitar and they are kinda wrong and very hard to read.. would love to get a tab thats right just like you play it :) thanks
@myturningpointАй бұрын
@@pinkfloydfan90 hi (love the user name! Also a lifelong Floyd fan ❤️), for the very reasons you described, I have not even bothered to do a tab for this song. For a song like this I think tab overly complicates and convolutes learning the song as you have to find your own hybrid pick/strum that's suited to your own biomechanics and how you 'feel' what I'm trying to demonstrate in this video. I hope that makes sense,and I hope that kind of explains why I won't be doing any tab for this 👍☺️
@myturningpointАй бұрын
The other thing with tab for this is that people will try to play EXACTLY what I put in the tab and will loose what is most important which is that hybrid pick/strum. Example would be that it doesn't matter how many strings you strum, where if I tab it out, people will assume you have to strum exactly what I tabbed out which defeats the entire feel of the song 😕
@pinkfloydfan90Ай бұрын
@@myturningpoint ok thanks anyways :) i will try to just listen and listen, normally i learn with tabs and adjust the feeling afterwards i find that alot faster for me but i will try without, already making some progress cheers :)
