Ben thank you for this lesson, please ignore the immature losers who post negative and unkind remarks in this comment section. They are jealous that there lives are quite unremarkable. Your teaching effort goes far beyond the other online teachers and since I'm a gold pick member I can say that the value of your teaching program is excellent. Keep up the fine work you do!!

@magicman2001 It's a device invented by the Normans in 1070 to be used as a torture tool in their conquests. Later, in the 1900's, bluegrass adopted it as its signature sound. I use it for both purposes.

I watched a video where a guy told me to play with that chat-a-NOOG-a galloping swing. Now you tell me not too?!?!?!?! My head exploded, my keyboard is covered in brains, and my newly orphaned child is typing this comment for me as requested in my last will and testament.

DUDE, and to think not a 1/2 hour ago I posted this on another banjo channel I came across: “I had a fraternity brother at Texas A&M in the early 80s who played the banjo. That is back when fraternities were outlawed/unrecognized at A&M. After a party, he would get it out and tear it up - Foggy Mountain, Sleepy Man,… You would think a bunch of college kids would be too cool to like the banjo. Hell no, we loved it!!”

@2LateIWon Awesome! Thanks so much! Yeah, there is room in our playing for both kinds, and we definitely need to be able to play both at will.

Thank you... I am only a few weeks in, and I can't nearly play as fast as you, but I know I have been doing that galloping pattern I think. The one thing I can't seem to do well though is that hammer on. I just can't get the volume even though I am hitting it hard. near the fret and with the tip of my finger. If I play is crazy slow, I can do fine, but when I pick up the pace just a little (again, nothing like your pace), the hammer on volume dies.

Ben I started playing claw hammer this Christmas and just a couple weeks ago started playing the Scruggs style . I want to start learning the standards and began with Cripple Creek .. Everyone else's videos just confused the hell out of it but yours nailed it man thanks a bunch ! What would you suggest I tackle next ? Granted ill keep working this one till I get it exactly the way it should be but I'm thinking Flint Hill special may be a bit much to soon ? Lol thanks again for doing what you do man !

Dude thank you! I was trying to play the Cripple Creek tab in the Scruggs book and he interchanges the 8th sand 16th note ornaments, but on the recording it kinda sounds like he's doing mostly 8th notes.. Appreciate the explanation.

Some songs are swing, some aren't. And some can be either. Cripple Creek, in fact, played slowly sounds best with that swing, and played at speed sounds best straight. So if you play only one way or the other, you're selling yourself short! Learn both is the point. Master both!

This is obviously a preview of a longer, more Cripple-Creek-centric video on his website. The title hints at what can be had if the whole video is purchased. MARKETING, MY GOOD MAN
