+Bill Thomas Still in a bit of "aftermath" or what you call it, still tired and broken down, but it's getting there. Thanks for the thought! As for piano tutorial. piano is actually my main instrument, main reason for not doing piano tutorials yet is that the way I want it done needs alot of new equipment and computer programs I just don't have the money for yet. How do I play the bridge? Like, which strumming pattern do I need to use? Awesome video by the way! Best teacher ever!
@Astlessons7 жыл бұрын
+Mystery Unsolved Hey and thanks for the kind words, it means alot, and sorry for the late reply! She plays the Bridge differently in her performances, but basically it's a mix of just random slow strumming/plucking and using pattern 3 mostly, sometimes with small variations like skipping or adding a strum. So my tip is to start by picking one performance you like how she plays it and kind of study where she plays patterns and not, and try to just listen to the random improvising between the patterns and just try to imitate it. I mean it doesn't really matter if you nail how she improvises exactly or not, just kind of focus on the big picture and try to capture the feeling of it if that makes sense. That's what I would to atleast:D

You don't happen to have an audio or video recording of you playing the instrumental all the way through of this song do you? Thanks so much
@Astlessons7 жыл бұрын
+Cat Arj Hey! I've answered this further down already so copying that answer after this sentence and then following up in the end of this comment:D There's actually a girl who mixed my recordings here into a full instrumental version, first without my consent but then I gave it to her if she gave me credit. Don't remember her name but try searching here on youtube again, maybe she didn't tag it properly so you'll have to scroll a few pages to find it. Otherwise it would be cool if someone else here who learned from my video makes a real cover either with or without vocals, and if someone does it and credits me for teaching it I'd gladly promote it here! Personally I just don't have the time for the moment, I've been sick for a long time and as soon as I'm well enough to record again I gotta focus fully on catching up with new tutorials. So that answer is for a proper recording, but since so many people seem to want it I'll consider doing a more simple play-through, if so I'll get back to you and let you know of course!

@Astlessons8 жыл бұрын
+Edna Sabic (SabiBear) Thanks Edna for the kind words, always nice to hear! Saw you subscribed too so hope you'll like more uploads as well. To your question, think I mentioned she just strums a bit freely on that part, also alot of single strums, so I didn't include the exact way of playing the Bridge, just the part before in end of Chorus 2. But since you're interested I just listened again and I'll explain in words best I can and hope you'll follow! I'll divide it into several comments to make it easier to read.
@Astlessons8 жыл бұрын
+Edna Sabic (SabiBear) Okay, so end of Chorus 2 on the "oohs" after "silly little girl next door" just play pattern 3, I mentioned this in the video but just reminding anyways to get the whole picture:D Then after when the Bridge starts you first strum Am once and let ring, then on "..trash about me" when it goes to C play this (D * * * D * * D * D D D D * D *) with a hammer-on with indexfinger on second downstrum. Then after on next two chords (Fmaj7/C and E) just strum once and let ring again.
@Astlessons8 жыл бұрын
+Edna Sabic (SabiBear) Then on Am when singing "week" you first strum once and then starting rocking downstrums (D D D D D D D D) kind of making downstrums 1 4 7 stick out by playing them harder and longer. In hindsight I should have included this pattern since it's actually a recognizable pattern and quite common, I just didn't pay enough attention on that part I guess:D

Desy nonsochecognomefintometterelol if u don't have one you can make one using a pencil and one or two rubber bands. Thats what I did and it works pretty well
@Astlessons6 жыл бұрын
+Desy nonsochecognomefintometterelol Sorry for the very late reply, I've been away for a long time! You can play without but it's quite complicated, just go to ultimate guitar and search for the song which will bring you to my upload, then just transpose as I instruct in the top of the upload. I'd advice to buy a capo instead though, once you've learned to use it you'll love it! Sure you can do it with rubber band and pencil but I'd just buy a capo instead:D What it's for, it changes the key for you, if you put it on first fret to transpose the song one step higher without having to play other chords, place it on second fret then you transpose it two half-steps and so on.

is it possible to do this without the chord pinching thing? i dont have one...
@Astlessons8 жыл бұрын
+Yui Hirasawa There's kind of two answers to this question, and since I don't know what musical level you are on I'll answer it thoroughly in both ways and hope you don't take offense if you're really a more advanced player. So firstly, you never "have to" use the capo (chord pinching thing), the chords work just as well playing as they are without the capo, the melody just changes key which means you'll have to sing a bit lower but other then that it sounds the same. So if you don't wanna play along with her recordings this works just fine. But secondly, if you really wanna play and sing along with her (in the same key) and singing as high/low without a capo, you'll have to change the chords to another key. To play those chords without a capo you instead use the following shapes all through (with links how to take them): C#m - X 4 6 6 5 4 (www.how-to-play-guitar.eu/guitar_chords/Csharp/Csharpm_Guitar_Chord.gif) E - 0 2 2 1 0 0 (www.how-to-play-guitar.eu/guitar_chords/E/E_Guitar_Chord.gif) Amaj7/E - 0 0 2 1 2 0 (www.how-to-play-guitar.eu/guitar_chords/A/Amaj7_Guitar_Chord.gif, except play the open E-string) G# - 4 6 6 5 4 4 (www.how-to-play-guitar.eu/guitar_chords/Gsharp/Gsharp_Guitar_Chord.gif)

+VitaIsAPerson It's called a "capo", if you don't know what it does it changes the key of the guitar, so basically for each step you move it up everything you play gets one step higher. +Fate Schnapp Only on some of the chords. Either watch from 02:23 again or on the CD paper on the website. Once there look on the chord diagrams and above the strings (vertical lines), on some you see a X which means you don't strum that string when playing. I also talk about it on chords section that you "skip" or "mute" strings.

+Pacify That Crybaby Yeah, or to play it like Melanie (and me:D) does it you need a capo, also it's much easier then playing the song without one. But if you don't have a capo it's still possible playing the original key along with the recording, if you go to my upload on ug and transpose to +4 you can just hover of the chords giving you the best alternative way I just tried myself and it sounded okay: tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/melanie_martinez/dear_porcupines_crd.htm

+Jamie Struijer Hey Jamie! If you scroll down to the comment from "Yui Hirasawa" you'll find how, she asked the same and I've answered her properly there. Then if you have any further questions after reading my reply just there in that thread instead so it's easier to follow for both me and other people. Cheers and hope it helps!:D

+Anja Grande Hey! I'm sorry to hear it, I'll gladly try to help you more though if I can. Have you tried the free papers on the website by the way, there's lots of information in another form, like the PP paper which has the strumming. Maybe it will help to sit and watch them by yourself for a while? Or try specifying more what I need to explain further and I'll try here in writing of course, or add extra information on one of the papers.
