Not a standard power chord in sight for this pummeling tune of dissonant riffs and hatred!
Primitive Man tunes down 4 full steps, or 8 semitones. I've strung up with a set of 16-74 strings for this tuning (I believe Ethan uses 17-74).
My Will doesn't really have a key and is full of dissonant sounding Root-6th (R6) dyads.

That Acid Rain pedal does get you close to the sound. Ethan of Primitive Man told me that he just uses amp distortion with no pedals boosting it. He puts his modulation and delay pedals straight into the front of the amps. I know he was using an Orange Thunderverb and a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec in the early days of Primitive Man but I think he's now using Dean Costello Amps

Oh man, didn't expect this one to drop. Sick! On a sidenote, Primitive Man was probably the loudest, heaviest band I've ever seen live , aside Sunn. Just absolutely insane shit. Also cool to see you tackle tremolo picking. I've been trying to get better at it myself for a time now and I'm slowly making progress. I've become rather fond of Dunlop Flow Picks (the 1.5mm one in particular), or the Dava Delrin Grip Picks for trem picking and general playing. I feel like you're generally better off with a Jazz style pick at any rate.

Motorhead still is the loudest for me. I've seen Primitive Man twice now and put them at 4th loudest for me. Weedeater is the 2nd and YOB is 3rd. I will say that the venue plays a huge part in a band being loud though when people bring this topic up

@jonluick
@jonluick Жыл бұрын
My favorite picks for tremolo picking, and frankly everything are the Dunlop Ultex 2.0mm Jazz III. Very long lasting, good feel, perfect size for me. I've been using Jazz III size since the 90s. The best way I've found to get better at tremolo picking is to start with a metronome and get used to doing 16th notes at progressively faster tempos. Over time you'll build the muscles for it. I also try to remain as loose as possible too. If i tighten my wrist / forearm, it's energy wasted and I can't do those tremolo parts for as long as I want to. Just my 2 cents. And more primitive man videos please. I've seen them a handful of times now and they are loud, and quite the experience to behold.

Ernie Ball 1.5mm prodigy picks are what I use for tremolo picking. I go for an angled approach for picking so that I get less resistance from the string.

I’m not sure-I will look when I get home, I know they’re rigid as hell though! You know what was kind of cool, I found this pick, I know ‘special designer picks’ can seem a little gimmicky, but they’re called ‘attak picks’. Spendy, I got a sampler pack of them to try, they have an incredible grip depression with raised dots inside it that keeps it grounded while I tremolo pick. I should dig up the link-I found them on IG a while ago and gave it a shot. Cool pick

Yo! Sick vid as always. I’ve been in a Surf band for a couple years and got a pretty good technique going on for tremolo picking. Letting your wrist do all the work is the key. To get my forearm involved the least as possible I play my guitar slung HELLA low. Got this idea from CJ Ramone who talked about tremolo picking on Ramones songs. For picks, I love the Dunlop flow standard. I like them heavy. With the pick perpendicular to the pickguard. Easy money! Lol.

I use Cool brand Cat Tongue picks. 1.0 mm. The baby blue colored ones. I used to use the 1.3 mm but I switched because it was easier to tremolo pick with the 1.0 and they are more versatile across genres. Without question my favorite pick I’ve ever used in 25 years of playing guitar

However PM, while sonically fascinating, I don’t enjoy the bands music. It’s not that I think the band is bad or untalented, its truly the first time a band in these genres that didn’t do it for me. 24.75” will be hard to intonate at or below G#. 25.5” will do fine at Drop G. Baritone will give you more tension without any intonation issues, they also tend to have a tighter low end / more clarity. Just depends what you’re after.
