How to play DS games online after Nintendo WFC Shutdown! No hacks or mods required! (Wiimmfi)

Hey guys! Thanks to a new bug in Nintendo's implementation of SSL (called "nds-constraint") as discovered by shutterbug2000, it is now possible to play Nintendo DS games online via custom server (Wiimmfi in this case) without modifying your DS, or needing a cheating device or a flashcart! Literally the only instruction is to enter the DNS listed above in your connection settings, and you are good to go!
This video shows how to set the DNS server in your connection settings, and also delves into how to make your own unsecured WiFi hotspot via an Android phone, just in case that's useful, since regrettably the highest form of security the DS supports is WEP (only Pokémon Black/White and their sequels support WPA connections), and nobody really works in WEP anymore. I also demonstrate connecting to Mario Kart DS, the GTS of Pokémon Diamond, and the Battle Videos section of Pokémon Black 2.
IMPORTANT INFO AND TROUBLESHOOTING:
- If you are trying to use Mario Kart DS and your game crashes while connecting, delete all friends from your friend roster (you can do that in the Records section!)
- If you get Error Code 60000, delete your Nintendo WFC configuration from the options menu. You will then be prompted to overwrite your FC when you next connect, and this will work.
- If you get any other error code, you can look it up at wiimmfi.de/error
- If you can't get a connection set up on your DS, get an old router that supports WEP encryption or lower, or try my Android trick later in the video. Might work if you have a phone capable of that.
- If you can't find opponents when using the Android trick, well... yep. Pretty much as I feared.

And if anyone's wondering how this all works, Nintendo's SSL implementation on all DS games is completely flawed. When connecting to a server, the DS wants to see if the certificate for the site is signed by Nintendo. No custom server in the world has a certificate like that... lucky for us, every Wii console has its own certificate, signed by Nintendo, that is capable of signing other certificates on behalf of Nintendo (completely invalid, of course). The DS, though, treats that as perfectly logical and thus accepts the connection. Therefore, all we need is a custom DNS that lies about who owns Nintendo WiFi Connection, and then their server just needs to show their Wii-signed certificate and the DS is happy. Stupid bug, but very useful. Interestingly, despite the bug existing in every single DS game, including ones released in 2012, well after Wii came out, the Wii does NOT have this bug.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If anyone is experiencing crashes when connecting on Mario Kart DS, delete all of your registered friends (from the Records section). That will fix it! Also, Pokémon have got random Mystery Gifts running, so you can pick up some of the old event Pokémon from back in the day! Check it out! (Though I would argue against using these Pokémon in the later generations online. That's not really fair to people since these are custom servers, and the Pokémon you receive aren't official).

Hey, thanks for the explanation in the description! I had stopped following developments in DS custom servers, but tonight I was having great fun messing around with some Gen 4/5 Pokemon events on a custom server and was wondering how I managed to get online without any hardware/software modifications. The description explains everything - the how, why, when and who of it all - so I thank you for that! I'm a far-cry from a computer networks expert so I don't quite understand exactly how they can get a security certificate signed for their server using a Wii console, but it did help me understand the theory of it and how it gets around the encryption checks on the DS.

This works every time. Had to buy a mini router ($15) and I use WEP on it (to make sure no one else can join) cause that’s all that Nintendo WFC supports. I’ve played so many online races (I’ve had 2 other people join at most, but it’s usually just one other person). Thanks again, really.

Especially FTW hackers and hackers that only target a single player for no apparent reason. I remember in the good old days in MKWii, FTL hackers would do many things, like item spamming of course. Stars, megas, blocking paths, you name it. Unlike MK7 hackers, MKWii hackers would target everyone in the room. I wish there were more FTLs in MK7 that would target everyone in the room. Unfortunately, in MK7, most hackers I've encountered are either FTWs, target a single player for no reason, or help out an individual player; letting them pass while targeting everyone else in the room. Speaking of targeting, I wish there were more FTLs in MK7 that would pwn FTWs and glitchers, and not a single innocent player. FTWs and glitchers in MK7 get away with it too easily. They should be pwned MKWii-style, of course. I remember when I was in a WW with 3 hackers, 1 FTW and 2 FTLs. The 2 FTLs let the FTW do his thing with his blinking invincibility while they spammed lightning with the delimiter. Very sad. The hacking situation is only getting worse (or better, depending on how you look at it). A few weeks ago a Japanese hacker leaked lightning delimiter and freeze codes. What a shame. My main reason for wanting more MKWii-like FTLs in MK7 is because I want to gain VR quickly. Whenever I join a random WW, I always join rooms with players whose VR amount is significantly less than mine, usually 50% below of mine. Because of that, I only gain ~2VR per race. And if bad luck fucks me in the ass? I lose 5+ VR. That may not sound like a lot, but it takes many races just to get that VR back. However, with FTLs, they help me gain VR quickly. Instead of gaining 2 VR per race, I gain upwards of 20+ per race. That's EXTREMELY worth it! 10+ races for the price of 1! That is, of course, if they set their VR to above 99999, preferably 7FFFFF (524k). There's another problem I have with gaining VR in MK7: 2nds. A 2nd is a 2nd profile a person creates, usually created when they reach max VR. Me personally, I don't mind 2nds. but when someone joins a room with "2nd" in their name *and* has lower than 70k VR, that's where they cross the line. When that happens, I have a slightly lower chance of gaining 2 VR per race. This is just a tiny problem I have with 2nds. Why can't they join with their 99999 VR profile to help a fellow racer out? Recently, instead of putting "2nd" in their name, 2nds have started to use "VR2" in their name. I'm sorry, but if you're a 2nd with "Vr2" in your name, I going to laugh at you, and rightfully so. You aren't Hernán. You're just a wannabe. be a real man (or woman) and rename yourself to "2nd." If Nintendo announces that Nintendo Network is going to shut down, I'm going to set up a hacked 3DS to join my WW with 7FFFF VR and No DC code. It has been my dream to achieve max VR in MK7 for a long time. Wish me luck.

If you don't like MK7 hackers, I suggest checking out Fishguy6564. he made an NTR plugin that blocks hacker activity (only on your screen) once detected, similar to MKWii's "Ignorance Is Bliss" developed by Chadderz. The same guy also created an anti-continuous lightning code/plugin (I don't know). He has footage of it on his Twitter. The mystery gifts you get are dependent on the day set on your DS's clock. By setting the clock to different times starting at January 1st, you will get a gift based on the order of which the Wifi Gifts are released (at least I think that's the ordering, there's some unused ones like Azure Flute they threw in there too). Edit: My date description is actually off, see comment below.

Tutorial on an easy way to connect to a compatible Wi-Fi network if you have a MacBook and an iPhone (other devices probably work): 1. Turn off WiFi on your Phone and turn on its Personal Hotspot and choose the option "Bluetooth & USB Only" 2. Plug the phone into the computer with a USB cord 3. Connect the Computer to the Personal Hotspot 4. Go into System Preferences on your computer and click on Network and make sure that WiFi and iPhone USB are both connected 5. Go out of the Network Menu and then go into the Sharing Menu in System Preferences 6. Select Internet Sharing (don't turn on yet) and choose "Share your connection from:" and pick iPhone USB. 7. Select the Wi-Fi option next to, "To Computers Using" 8. Click on Wi-Fi options and change the Network Name to whatever you want and make sure the security is on *none,* you can also change the Channel if you want (mine is at 6) and then press OK. 9. Turn on Internet Sharing and you'll see at the top-right that the Personal-Hotspot Icon is now like the Wi-Fi Icon but with an arrow pointing up 10. Connect the DS using search for Access Point or do it manually and Change the Primary DNS as stated 11. If you get an error like 530## something, it's usually because you did it quickly and just retry connection test again and it'll likely work. 12. When the Connection is successful, then you are set and ready to connect. (By the way, it's probably best that you turn off Internet Sharing after you are done each time as to avoid anything bad happening to your network.) This would probably work in a similar manner with Androids and Windows and such, but I only know this way at the moment.

I use android tether. Security is at none. Only one connection allowed for security and connect ds with the wiimmfi dns server after it test connects. It should give an error about the shutdown and change the settings for dns of that specific connection with the phone and test. It should say connection successful or something like that.

I don't know how secure this is, but what I've typically done is set my router to WEP or unsecured, don't broadcast the SSID, set up IP address reservation for individual MAC addresses, and then set up an IP range blocking service for all unreserved IP addresses. This however may only be practical if you don't have frequent guests or cycle through a lot of different wifi devices (particularly smartphones). Though apparently you can also sometimes set up two wifi networks on the same router (sometimes called a guest network), so I suppose you could similarly do this process specifically on the secondary network...though it's questionable just how much security one would really need for just playing online DS games.

For anyone else who was having errors connecting to the internet on the DS with a hotspot, I tried turning on Wi-Fi Sharing, or at least that's what it is called on my Galaxy S8 (which turns your phone effectively into a gateway for your normal Wi-Fi that has a higher security) and it worked perfectly after doing that. It doesn't work with my phone's mobile data, but doing that seemed to work consistently when I was previously getting 52100 errors.

I've literally tried it on 3 different 3ds's and I just always get error 20110 (nintendo wfc has been discontinued). I saw some 50000 error ONCE though whilst trying but it only appeared once... If Gen 5 pokemon is supposed to work regardless of internet security, I don't understand what I'm doing wrong here. I followed what you did, and what some other guy did as well to try to get connected but it's to no avail. :(

I did this yesterday and it still had quite a few matches in 2023, it was pretty cool my phone has wifi hotspots instead of mobile data which was really helpful, I just kept an eye on how many devices got connected to it. I played it through nds bootstrap though because I lost my cart, but with no patches to the rom. funny how it could handle Wi-Fi just fine but would freeze when I tried to do local the day before but I can't complain. I also just got a friend code on HGSS yesterday which I just started playing on my 3DS XL, I also went into the Wi-Fi plaza on there

Do you use your wifi at home to power up your mobile hot spot? I had the same problem with 52100 ... until I switched to mobile internet. Then it worked flawlessly. Maybe the safety measures within the wifi router still influence the connection, even when an open hot spot on a phone is used.

Use a public wifi hotspot. Remove password protection from your android hotspot. Nintendo DS support only WEP protection protocol (the ds is very old) and some modern smartphone(such device who have android 10) dosen't support WEP key, only WPA and WPA2, so it's better for your DS leave the hotspot withouth any password

Apparently error code 61020 means "GameSpy Maintenance", GameSpy being the service that provided servers for the DS and Wii before the shutdown. So I assume it's some server-side issue. Unless there's some other issue client-side, the only thing you can do is wait and try again later.
