Thank You for the video. I have in my lap 11 string kantele made of juniper. I did never plan to play it, but my mom got one for Herself and I often like to tinker with it. It smells like forest and when I touch it it sounds sooo good. I want to learn to play it. Just a little bit. Amazing instrument.

do you use the major scale when plucking? do you have a "Finnish" scale or one you use other than major or minor? thank you

What should i do if my kantele loses tune easily? I made it myself btw.. Do i need to rebush (or something like that)?
@MaijaPokela6 жыл бұрын
Cool that you've made one yourself :) Are the kantele pegs made of wood or metal?
@m21sup6 жыл бұрын
Maija Pokela zither pins from a harp shop :) but i think i made a few mistakes.. still i can learn how to play thanks to you. Keep it up!

The one I built kept going out of tune easily during the first 2-3months. Now, I rarely have to retune it. It is probably the wood and the tension that takes some time to settle and cohabit.
@lesliefranklin18705 жыл бұрын
@Svinfylking: If your zither-like pegs keep slipping, you might try dope, the type they use on wood around piano pegs to swell the wood and make the pegs tighter. Good luck.
@scrambledmandible4 жыл бұрын
It depends how recently it was made/how new the strings are. If it's new strings, they'll need time to stretch out a bit, which means you'll have to retune a lot. If it's fresh-built, you have both above _and_ the wood will need time to get used to the tensions it's under. Either way, a lot of patience and a _lot_ of retuning is in order. (this is necessary for all stringed and/or wood instruments, so you're not alone :p) If neither of the above are the case, then I would check the pegs. If they are loose or slip a lot, some dope (another reply speaks of this) is likely in order. If the strings are *really* old (It's extremely unlikely this would be a worry, as the strings usually get replaced long before this point, but it _does_ happen sometimes especially with hand-me-downs), the strings may be starting to fail. Good news in this case though! The strings used on kanteles are pretty cheap (especially compared to wound guitar strings!), so that shouldn't be a problem at all; just remember to remove those sharp points!

Lovely video! Melikes :) I have gotten an 14 string Kantele just the other day and really want to learn this instrument. Are you planning on more in depth follow-up videos, too? smiles from Austria.

Thank you so much! :) Yes we have been planning to continue with the 11 string kantele and also do a 5 string kantele workshop for beginners. Let's see when we have time to do them, hopefully soon, this was a lot of fun!
