The second of our look at the French, this time the horsey bois! There's slightly more nuance to these guys than the infantry as we look at the different types of cavalry and their battlefield roles.
I now have an affiliate link with The Outpost! If you're looking to get some goodies, please use this link, it doesn't cost you any extra and helps the channel! www.the-outpos...

One the weakness of a two regiment brigade v a three strong one, Clash of Eagles requires both units in a two-strong cavalry brigade to be shaken before it effects the brigade - not one

This is currently the case for the entire second edition. In fact, the 3 regiments of French cavalry (without the marauder guild) are now in a worse position than, for example, the Austrian brigade composed of 2 regiments of dragoons.

Thanks so much for another kick ass video. 👍 I have to say your vids were key to getting me into BP. I’ve played 4 walkthroughs of the rules and your vids have helped me immensely and I’m sure many others. I’ve shared your channel with my group as we are all new to the game and we have all learned a lot from you. Many thanks!

"Harassing the enemy" is a tough one like you say. How to represent that. Your explanation for hussars is really good. But what about skirmishers? How to represent that? They did not do much damage in terms of the number of wounded and killed but a lot of psychological damage. Especially French officers suffered from British skirmishers being picked off and killed - which often enticed them to move forward or start firing to have the skirmishers pull back. What are your thoughts on representing that on the tabletop?
@NapoleonicWargaming
@NapoleonicWargaming 3 жыл бұрын
It's a tough one. I think BP does an *ok* job of representing them, but could definitely be better. Perhaps for units with inherent light companies one of their shooting dice could disorder on a 5?

Congrats on the increase in subscribers. Well deserved! Really good video (again). The role of light cavalry and dragoons (however you want to classify them) is a tricky one in wargaming. Their roles were so incredibly important being the eyes of the army and gathering supplies etc respectively. I have not seen this represented well on the tabletop in any rules (but I might have missed some). Light cavalry should give a strategic bonus to the commander somehow - or a lack of light cavalry should give a minus of some sort. It was clear when Napoleon lacked cavalry after the Russia campaign that he did not know what the enemy was doing and acted blindly. This would give more value to hussars e.g. For dragons maybe they could give a bonus to supplies or intelligence of the enemy army or similar. Do you know of any rules that do this? Or how do you see it?

Thanks buddy! It's the support from you guys that makes it possible! There was a set I played many years ago which had pre-game campaign stuff.i think having more light cav made your opponent deploy first. Tbf, it might even have been an ancients set

Hi, Brilliant content as always. In your 'starting...' videos you specify cavalry with 8 troopers rather than 12. Is this OK for BP2? I assume 8 matches the frontage of an infantry line better and cavalry will only ever be in March column or line?
@NapoleonicWargaming
@NapoleonicWargaming 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. basically it comes down to (very) rough approximates of numbers. If you have infantry units of 36, each mini represents 20 real men, meaning 12 cavalry represent about 250. If you use 24 minis, each fig represents about 33 real men, so the cavalry units of 8 are about equivalent. Ultimately though, it's up to you and your group what represents a 'medium' unit, then go from there!
@malcolmy116
@malcolmy116 3 жыл бұрын
@@NapoleonicWargaming That seems perfect. I'm only playing solo on a 4x4 board. My infantry units are 24 men, so I'll reduce my cavalry Regiments to 8 troopers.

@@malcolmy116 I'd probably cut 1/3 off the distances there too. That's what we did in the starter army battle because the table was only 4' wide

Always a great video, but I have two findings: 1. The rules say that in two-unit brigades you need to shake or disorder both units for the brigade to be broken (Rulebook p.83) This negates the "bigger french cavalry brigades" advantage and the lancer-charging-cuirassier example that was mentioned. 2. In light cavalry you mention that you charge a unit that formes square and then redirect to the second one and force it into square. Is that correct with the rules? I thought that if you declare charge on a unit, you cannot also force square on another one in the same charge order?
@NapoleonicWargaming
@NapoleonicWargaming 3 жыл бұрын
In 1, i believe that is a suggested rule, not the actual hard and fast one. 2. I dont see why not, but even if it's only 1 unit, thr principle is there

Where in the rules does it talk about needing an order roll to form hasty square? In the must form square rule you roll 2d6 and form on anything but 1s.

Now-now, ask politely. The question comes off as a strident, righteously enflamed pimply adolescent with greasy hair fanning his grubby rulebook over the table in challenge, so that everyone must give witness to his martial prowess and vastly superior eminence. Such people become lonely, bitter old divorced contract network engineers, hotel bar rhythm guitarists, or comb-over equipped comicon beta orbiters hanging out in dive bars, deep in their beer specials and droning on to anyone who will listen--or the wall--about how the other patrons are ignorant trogladytes and make their backsides twitch. Fester, fester, fester. Rot, rot, rot. Twitch, twitch, twitch. Try to be better than those needlessly confrontational fellows. Be nice. There's a good lad
