Been going a lot deeper into guitar these past few weeks and I'm a huge fan of indie music. Every time I look up a guitar lesson for an indie song, you always come up. Thankful you've got great music taste.

Don't ever apologize to people for talking too much. Let the people who have a problem with it just leave and then just be yourself and talk as much as you feel fit. You're putting out a free service so screw the haters

Talking is a huge part to learning any song. How he explains everything is amazing. Every detail is crucial. Fuck all you haters. This tutorial is great. Dude, keep being elaborate as possible.

Thanks for this. When teaching, for many reasons it is helpful to demonstrate the destination in the beginning. For those seeking to learn, he finally puts the pieces together at 8:08.

I would just like to say that this was a GREAT tutorial. Anyone who gave you a "thumbs down" should upload their own tutorial if they know so much instead of wasting time looking up others' tutorials because they obviously are just negative complainers who prolly can't play anyways! Sorry, off my high horse. Really great job explaining this song and it is the most accurate of all the versions I have seen. it is now the one I use. THANK YOU!!

Don't apologize dude! You're doing a fantastic job and should take all the time you want! You're doing the best tutorials on youtube so you can talk all that you want!

Hey guys, captain here. Just wanted to mention that there are actual string sets for this tuning being sold. I'm using the Daddario EJ38H, cheers! And gr8 tutorial btw!

This song can be played quite simply note for note w/ regular strings if you tune low to high: CGDGBD (G tuning over a lowered C), and capo on the 6th fret.
@brianfulda13 жыл бұрын
Hell yeah man! I had suspected he had restrung his thicker strings with thinner gauge strings and now that you explained it, it makes absolute sense. I have found a way (in an odd tuning) to play it accurately to the CD recording in the same octave and everything. But it's certainly not how they play it.
That is the most beautiful sounding guitar I have ever heard
@GarethEvansYT13 жыл бұрын
EADGBE - standard tuning . D & G being an octive higher than usual. what is unclear the word octave?
@davedwse12 жыл бұрын
Re-strung my guitar but snapped my strings, will hunt down these 'nashville tuning strings' as someone stated below and try again. Cant wait to get this song bang on! and thanks for the tutorial :)

This is the best and most accurate tutorial of this heavenly song. Thankyou so much bro!
@kevkracker12 жыл бұрын
Nashville tuning is typically used when referring to basses. Nashville tuning on a 4 string base just bumps up the tuning of the strings one string. (a standard bass would be EADG; Nashville tuning would be BEAD)

Gareth you have come a long way watching your videos today! Thanks for your contribution all these years! :)
@Mr42Harry4 жыл бұрын
Just a little confusion that took me a couple of minutes to work. At 7:13 when Gareth mentions playing "all other notes the same except the first note", I believe 5/7 notes in the tab are different. Basically, the middle finger should be open, not in C. (2nd fret). Only two left hand fingers should be in use.
@emilybutsonmusic12 жыл бұрын
You have to replace them with a different string that allows them to tune higher. The strings that are initially placed for D and G won't tune that high and will snap. So you put on a string (probably a 1 string) that will tune higher.
@hannahgrove42169 жыл бұрын
this is a great tutorial! and it stills sounds awesome on a regular-tringed guitar
@josh3rno11 жыл бұрын
The tuning or strings are octave higher strings. Ie. the second set of strings on a 12 strung guitar. Also known as Nashville tuning!

G0liath1012: their nashville strings. You can get them at any music store. Simple as that.

What you could have possibly said for the first four & 1/2 minutes is beyond me. But thanks for finally showing me
@ilenehmitchell11 жыл бұрын
So when you said he restrung his guitar, he actually moved his strings, removed them and placed them in different spots? He didn't just retune them as they were? That'd be ridiculous. I don't even know if I'm just confused and have it wrong or what.

@rw77996 жыл бұрын
so did bon ivor know the guitar so well that they restringed it to get the sound they needed for that song or is it a different method to string a guitar for many songs? or maybe they wrote on a piano and changed the strings to make it easier to play?

Can you please type out what notes or octaves the strings need to be (lower to higher preferably), it gets confusing when you explain by calling them 6th, 5th, etc. to me at least. Thanks and great job!

Great work! Happy to discover your tutorials through this video. Haven't even finished wathing this yet but - I'm curious - how did you work out what strings Vernon replaced and with what string? Seem to remember something called Nashville tuning. Is this something like?

It's a great tuto, But I just can't get my head around the tunning. I'm learning the guitar and I fell in love with this melody. Can you please be more specific for people like me who aren't quite confortable with the words octave and all. Sorry to bother, oh did I mentionned that i'm french ? It's not easy and your version is the best for me. Thanks in advance.

That's because you can't use a normal G string. You have to replace your 3rd string with a 1st string and your 4th with a 2nd. It helps to pay attention; he gives clear instructions on how to tune the guitar.

Christ on a bike. And I thought changing tuning was problematic. How do you get so deep into a Thoreau thing that you start restringing the guitar like that just for a song? And how, how goddammit, do you understand the thing so well that you can grasp all that restringing enough to tell me about it? Thankfully Gareth is enough of a bleary poet to understand and communicate it to us.
