Gosh, before I knew about arpeggiators, I used to play the synth arpeggios of this song by hand, manually, note by note with my right hand and the pad/string chords with my left. My right hand would get so tired before the song was over. Thank God there's a better way.

Thank you for posting this. Unfortunately my synth doesn't have a arpeggiator so I will have to use a sequencer.

Btw, I have a Kronos too but i kinda jacked the keys last time moving it around so for playing gigs now, I am using a Yamaha MODX7.

I do this with my band! I have the arpeggio hold on touch, so that it plays when I do all the pad chords! I just turn the arpeggio button off/on for the bridge.

Dave, I am trying learn the synth solo to Goodbye To You from Scandal. I need a tutorial & all I can find is people playing it. I'm getting confused in a couple spots. If you ever want to tackle that solo, I'd be really appreciative! Thx

Any way this could work with Ableton Live 11 on a Novation Launchkey 61? I know that Nick Rhodes used a Roland Jupiter 8 on the original recording, and I know there are all sorts of different patches out there, but I'm not sure what exactly the best way would be to recreate this on the keyboard that I have available.
@AudoraAudio2 жыл бұрын
Nope - the sounds are entirely dependent on the Korg Kronos sound engine, no samples used at all so Ableton is out.

Question: When playing this with a band, how do you and the drummer sync with the arpeggio? We currently play this (I use my GAIA for the arp) and my D-50 for strings sound. I will lay on the arp chord for a measure and then the drummer jumps in. I am in the process of consolidating my Gaia, my Rolandd D-50 and my Korg M-50 to my Kronos and a MIDI controller. (thinking....) could I use one of the outputs on the Kronos to feed my drummer a click off of my tempo?? I already have your patches (love them BTW), I am using Combis for all of my sounds (1 combi per song).
@AudoraAudio7 жыл бұрын
Two ways: 1 - Click track 2 - The arpeggio restarts when you play each time so even if it's off you can play the chord each time and gets the randomization you need. The OTHER way is to take it like it is but use the tap tempo to try and guess what tempo is being used. I guess you COULD just use the exiting tempo, but if it's that fast/slow, you might want to consider an alternative method to keep tempo in time. I don't know how this impacts since I pulled the sample from the album but generally I hope you're right.
@LearnWithGern7 жыл бұрын
When we play it, I can always hear my GAIA along with the tempo. Our new drummer is like a Timex, once he locks in, it's good. If I hear him drift, I will turn up jut a tad to get him back in the groove and then back down the volume. Although I haven't looked at your patch, I'm assuming it's a Combi with 2-3 programs? This will allow me to assign one part to my top MIDI board :)
@LeftoverPat4 жыл бұрын
Hey! I know late reply, but how I do it with my band, is we start with the arpeggiator. It sounds cool on its own for a sec :) Then drummer counts in to that. We don't like the click track game. I have it set so arpeggiator plays on single touch, so it goes with chords, and it doesn't stop on release.

During the Rio World Tour, Nick Rhodes would let it run 8 beats, then the band would kick in.

Not being a synth player (I play guitar in my band), is there a way to get that "pop corn" tone in a less expensive synth like a Mininova, etc?
@AudoraAudio2 жыл бұрын
Generally, it's a square/pulse wave with a very short ADSR, no decay and very little release. Use a high pass filter to clean up the lower end, no resonance on that filter. That should get you into the ballpark anyway!

I would like to ask that popcorn type sound on your left hand , what would that sound be called ? I need to find that sound and record it so I can loop it from a drum trigger ?
@AudoraAudio3 жыл бұрын
Hey! The problem with sounds is that there's no standard naming structure for custom sounds. It's not a preset you can just look up. The best I can do is describe it, but a different synth engine might not be able to create it exactly based on description. The bad news here is that there's no name I can give you to look up. The description would be: A sine wave with a fast ADSR, and some reverb. (And even this would take some subjective license to get it sounding accurate to the album) I hope this helps!

Would this work with a LaunchKey Mk3 keyboard? I have been trying to recreate this on my own, but I am a guitar player at heart and this is venturing into a lot of new territory for me I can't figure out, Tweaking parameters to get close to an original sound is one thing, but this ARP pattern is something else entirely.
@AudoraAudio2 жыл бұрын
It won't unfortunately - it requires the engine(s) being used in the Kronos. The arp though is just a single-octave random arpeggiation - once you get a short-attack sound, the "seed" is the chords being played but it's just a random-based arpeggiator.

The course notes you are playing is wrong... I have the official sheet music put out by Duran Duran I picked up way back in 1986..

I wonder if they were playing it on the Kronos with the sounds I made back in 1986 too? That might be why the notes aren't quite correct ;-)

In the original song, does the arpeggio sound with an only chord or with different chords?

The arp sequence is based on the chords being played!

Dave, could you mention which arpeggio program you used here?

It's karma, and I set it to random and adjusted the zones to restrict it to that location on the keyboard. I believe it's karma program 14 but I'm not at the Kronos right now.

Things can sound a lot more complicated than they actually are and vice-versa. Not cool to judge people on what they find hard or not.

Not really judging anyone except Nick Rhodes. Ive been a huge DD fan since 81. But all musicians know he's the least talented member of that band. Not to discount his importance to their history. But, if one looks at the chops of JT, for example, Rhodes is left in the dust as for just pure musical talent. Im sure you know that.

donutcookiepie Ahh, I thought you were getting at something else. I don't actually know Nick Rhodes... There's a lot of bands I've found that have keyboardists that would be fine without them, or that the keyboard parts are entirely uninspiring...

Yeah I actually really like most of his work....a lot! But, I'm also a big fan of guys like Tony Banks and all of the keys players from Yes. And, as much as I think he's a very unique and very imaginative writer and a good player for what he does, I know that he wouldn't be able to play his way out of a paper bag if he tried to tackle anything by Yes (except maybe Owner of Lonely Heart) or Genesis. He's just not in the same league as those guys. Still, I've seen Duran Duran live many times and I appreciate his work, as simplistic as it is.
