Thanks for all this beautiful work of Ben Howard Music, i've learned 5 songs from you already.. i commend you, I'm having trouble with finding the proper amp settings.. i'm using a fender mustang 1, i've only been playing for only 4 months and have quite a few songs on the acoustic.. now trying to figure out my amp???

Yes you're right. It's not that easy, but once you got the tuning right half of the job is done :)

Great tutorial! It's helped a lot. But does anyone know or maybe you @RaphiZ the guitar solo part at the end of the song. There is probably a second guitar playing it because it looks that way in live versions. It's a very whiney sound and it's so beautiful I want to play it. Let me know please thank you

i know you posted this 6 years ago but incase anyone has the same question today. Its a technique used to make like those harmonic sounds, almost violin like. Its mostly popular in Jazz, but what you do is you get a like metal finger thing idk what they are called, and you play it like a violin basically. So yeah its two guitar parts.

I played around with the first string tuned up and down and to be honest all other variations I tried out didn't sound right. Tell me when you got a better solution

Just to listen to since there's no studio version of it yet and most of the available live ones are bad quality or with screaming people. I'd just love to hear an instrumental version of it, but i understand. Thanks anyway

Top E tuned to C seems to work as well as D. But I think he mutes come strings a fair bit of the time; or at least only strikes the lower ones. Tricky...

ANYONE how to create the effects on the guitar which Ben Howard has on his in this song? An effect pedal? I'm quite new to the electric guitar world :D

lars Wilhelmsen I can't tell you exactly, as there will be several effects used, I would imagine. But I can hear delay, reverb, modulation/chorus (probably modulation - that's the "lazy" and hard to describe sound you hear), and perhaps a little tremolo; not sure about the last one, though. There may be some compression, too. Delay and reverb will be your main ingredients, however... Having said that, BH runs a Gibson Les Paul Goldtop (with humbuckers, it seems, unless he has chrome casings on some vintage P90 single coils - which is unlikely) through, usually, a Laney VC30 (2x12", I believe). The tone will begin from there. If you're using a transistor amp and some kind of all-in-one digital effects processor then forget it, I'm afraid. It won't even sound close. Tone costs money! Begin with a great guitar, then find a great amp, then build your effects individually. That's my opinion, anyway. And if you're on a budget, get the best you can for your money, i.e., nothing unnecessary. Guitar and amp, then just essential pedals. If the reverb is OK on your amp, no need for a revery pedal. If you have a decent twin channel amp and the overdriven channel is genuinely good, then no need for an expensive overdrive pedal. You'll then be looking at delay, compression and maybe tremolo. Chorus or modulation can be useful, too, but only when used judiciously, otherwise you'll end up sounding like Andy Summers fromt The Police all the time! Oyher effects are great fun, but not essential. Prioritise and do your research... Hope this helps - hope someone else replies, too. It takes years to figure this stuff out, so the more input you get, the better :-)

lars Wilhelmsen Also, if you look at BH's performance on the Letterman show, you can see his extensive pedal board. Must be about £2,000 worth of effects in there! Now, he won't be using all of them at once, but I don't think you're going to find any answers easily, unless there's an interview in which he discusses his effects... Also - if you're not gigging, just buy a "small" valve amp: 1 - 5 watts max. 5 watts (Blackstar, Marshall, and others) is pretty damn loud at home, and you get the benefit of pushing the amp into the territory where you start to get some real tonal warmth and "clipping". 30 watts is loud onstage, unless you're in a 7-piece band... Just a suggestion if you're still shopping...

Super late, but I think there is some reverse delay as well
