Hi Matt, one of my favorite Skynyrd songs! Ok... they don’t have any bad songs The lesson was great. At first I thought it was too slow but you would always go back and play the section more up to speed which was great. You really nailed it note for note and you stayed very focused which made it very easy to follow. Thanks for your effort Todd

Thanks a lot! I'm trying to keep the lessons as accessible as possible to people of all levels of expertise so I do break things down kinda slowly. I'm happy you could glean the benefits of the lesson regardless. All the best- Matt

Awesome video dude. This has been one of my favorite songs for a very long time and thought that it would be impossible to learn how to play. You made it very easy and enjoyable to learn, now all I need to do is practice a lot to get up to speed. Thanks for the sick video, keep it going!

My pleasure! Yes, one of the best. That intro is a lot of fun to play. And the way the beat swings throughout is a lot of fun to improvise over, not your standard country or rock licks. All the best- Matt

Hey Matt, new subscriber. I have a question...This lesson is great, but I'm curious how you learn solos. I'm a solid rhythm player and just starting to play some leads. If you learn songs by ear, do you determine the key and then use the major or minor pentatonic scales for that key to figure the licks out, in this case, the key of A? Thanks for the great lessons.

I have perfect pitch, so for me it's just a matter of transcribing what I hear. It just takes practice- learn a bunch of licks and eventually you won't need the pitch recognition- you'll be able to just hear similar movement patterns and know what's going on. This is how the players with great relative pitch do it- they can hear the intervals and then find the key by trial and error. Hope this helps!- Matt

Steve Gaines was a monster! His phrasing, bends and picking are just phenomenal. While all the Skynyrd guitarists were really rock solid r&r players ol' Steve could play ANYTHING! Certainly the best of the bunch with Ed being next. But it really is subjective to a large degree as I've heard many claim Allen or Gary was the top gun. The non-subjective part is that Steve could easily play any of the guys parts but without a doubt Gary couldn't pull off much of Steve's playing, or Ed's for that matter. Of course with it being art that really doesn't matter because what Gary lacked in technique he more than made up for with his feel and amazing ability to write great hook riffs. Anyway, great job on the lesson- newly subbed and 👍. Cheers P[>
