Thanks man! But I think in that Bbaug you are actually playinf an F# with a b13
@corytoddmusic3 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome, and thank you. I'll agree with you about that chord. When I worked out the chords, I didn't think through the progression (resolving from F# back to B) - I just saw the Aug and called it as that. This is something I'm trying to watch out for: making sure I look at what the function of the chord is, when paired with the Bass. I'll pin this one.

What I need to learn as a beginner to be able to play this song ? Thank you for making this content btw
@corytoddmusic Жыл бұрын
Hi David - That's a great question. The best answer I can give is practice! Practice, practice, practice. I know it sounds cliche; but it is true. If you just take your time to practice changing between the chords, and practice playing the lead lines, you will have all you need. And, every time you learn a new song, you will see that it becomes easier. Beyond that; learning about music theory (especially harmony) will help you to see how these Jazz chords are created! Thank you for watching!

Hi, tremendous work Cory! I'm trying to learn the song, and this video has been very helpful for me. I just want to comment on the F#m/B chord that you mentioned. I believe that the chord is not wrong, but perhaps it would probably be more appropriate to call it Bm9 (B minor chord with A note as the 7th and C# note as the 9th). Chords can have several names, and we need to choose a name that fits into the context of the song. F#m/B is certainly not wrong. However, since the song has a vi - I - IV - III progression (if I understand it correctly), I think Bm9 is more instructive than F#m/B. It's just a small nitpick, but I think it's important for me to try to understand the song beyond just pressing the right notes. And, please correct me if I'm wrong, since I don't have any background in music. Keep up the good work, cheers!

I think this comment is the most important comment here! Agreed. In the same manner, you can also add C#m9 just before F#7(III) kicks in, to slip another quick 2-5-1 tweak.

Pentatonic shapelyare you using over the chord tones to solo / improvise
@corytoddmusic3 жыл бұрын
I'd need to review what I played here to be sure, but typically I tend toward pentatonic (e-shape, b minor in this case) then I extend outward with scalar major/minor or modal passages with chromatic meandering. I play off chord tones from either a modal approach or directly with arpeggios and chordal licks. But to be honest, most of it is done without thought. When I recorded this I improvised off camera 3 or 4 times, each time generating a few lick ideas. So the on camera version is a live recording of me improvising as well as utilizing the licks I came up with from my previous improv sessions. This is one (of many) reason(s) I don't consider myself a Jazz player. I'm more of a patchwork player/composer rather than a live improvisor if that makes sense.

what's does the small circle mean on the high e string in the D7(13) chart ?
@corytoddmusic3 жыл бұрын
That chart is showing the transition from D7 to D7 add 13. So to start with, one would play just the D7, then add the B note on top after. Specifically the 13 number just refers to the interval that is used to extend the chord.
@corytoddmusic3 жыл бұрын
I just realized I may not have answered your question! The small circle is the 13 that gets added.

Hey Cory, I am playing this tune with a pianist friend, what cords should I play? and him?
@corytoddmusic4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel - I would want the piano to take the bass line with the left hand, which is something like: B(A,B) - B,C#,D(C#,D) - D, E,F#,G(F#,G) - G(G,G) - C#(C#,C#) - [F#(F#)

0:49 At the end of here, I thought choking down was more natural than sliding down.
@corytoddmusic4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure which part you mean... When the first statement of the melody turns around to repeat for the first time? It has actually been awhile since I've listened to the original as well. So it would be hard to be sure what the differences sound like. I know that I prefer the version I played in the intro here over the more slide oriented approach later n the lesson. But I'm not sure if that's what you are referring to. I am happy to discuss if you want to clarify. Actually if you let me know the note names where the slide vs choke might be. Then I'll know what you mean . :) either way thank you for watching and commenting.

I highly recommend the Spitfire Labs Drum VST/Library, I believe it's still available for free, these guys have made some really excellent quality freebies: labs.spitfireaudio.com/#type=&search=&new=true As for the backing track, I can't give you permission to use it in any recordings that will be used for profit. However, if you want to use it here on youtube (to post your cover version), I'm okay with that, so long as you post a link to the backing track/video, so that others are aware that it is intended for educational use, and is available for them to use in such a manner.

@corytoddmusic5 ай бұрын
I was just looking at the chords on the piano (I haven't looked at the song in 4 years or so). IF, I agree with you.... I would be subject to sleepless nights, rolling around in bed, kicking the covers off, wide awake, in a cold sweat; agonizing over the realization that I really should have used the proper chord names! ;) My excuse, is simple: The guitar, in western classical tradition, tends to avoid extended and altered chords, until the late "Romantic" period. This video introduces students to simple classical based conventions that avoid extended chords and lustful "Jazz" Harmonies; while introducing the simple idea of triads being played over non-triad Bass tones. It has been said that extended and altered chords are the work of the Devil, indeed they seem to conjure all manner of incomprehensible and unrestrained tonality! To ensure the spiritual safety of my viewers, I warn them that attempting the Bm9 naming convention may lead to greater harmonic desires! JK, Lol! Cheers :)
