Been watching your videos for years but never actually put the effort and time into learning any of them properly! After watching the Queen movie at weekend I was determined to learn some Brian May solos, studying this for the best part of an hour and I've got it nailed. Awesome work Chris I love it!

Chris - So great to see you covering solos from more of the 'classic rock' guitarists. Keep peppering them in amongst the metal tunes. No one better on the interwebs at graciously freely sharing guitar lessons in a clear, concise manner than yourself. Also, the top on that guitar is beautiful. Cheers from Baltimore.

Cool lesson, I got the sound from a flanger going to a messa boogie 2, with delay and reverb. Though I am using ancient pedals I got it sounding like your version. Of course I a used a 10 pence piece as a pick.

J T Trust me, brother, you get better by learning simple riffs and solos than by learning hard stuff. Hard technical solos make you practice more and get more precise, but easy solos such as this one help you develop your musical creativity, because when you play slow and easy solos it'll be all about how effective it is and how good it sounds, not how fast you are at playing it. Faster and harder doesn't mean better :)
@ilir966 жыл бұрын
J T It's not about how easy or how hard it is to learn, it's about how good it sounds. That's the lesson that simple solos give us, and you seem to have failed to achieve it. But it's never too late! Running scales is not everything, if you wanna make your own solo you have to create some actual melodies, you would sound pretty boring if you just shredded and swept for two minutes. A good musician listens to the notes, every note has to "breathe", listen to what you're playing,make an actual melody out of it, bend strings in tune, give it the right amount of sustain and the right vibrato in order to give it the feel that you want, there are so many things that you can find in slow solos that faster solos will start to look like they're actually easy after all. For a fast solo, just practice and you'll learn it, but for a slow solo you have to understand the feel of the solo, it's not just play the notes correctly, you can put your own personality in a slow solo, but in a fast solo your personality will get lost between all those scale runs and sweeps. Peace!
@ilir966 жыл бұрын
J T It doesn't matter how much it takes to learn a solo, if it sounds good, it's well worth it. Feel and stuff like that do come naturally, of course, but they need some development, you can't just randomly have a Zakk Wylde-ish vibrato or a Marty Friedman-ish bending style without a day of practicing on them. Or you can't have a David Gilmour sustain, if you practice exclusively on speed. You mentioned some great bands whose guitarists are able to express feeling while playing fast, but you do realise that they actually had to practice on the feel part as well, don't you? In order to be more expressive and more personal on a fast solo, you gotta learn first how to do it with a slow solo. Gotta be able to walk, before you can run! I'll make you an example: My dream was to learn the final section on the Tornado of Souls solo. I do love the whole solo, but I used to focus on the final section because it sounded harder and more badass. Days, weeks, months of practice, I finally got it down, and then? Then I realised that I had just wasted my time, I learned that section, but I literally learned nothing *from* that section. Talking about the Tornado of Souls solo, now that I focus more on the actual melody of the solos instead of their level, I could learn more from the first section of the solo (the slow bends, the actual melody that follows the chord progression, that couple of medium-speed licks that resolve into specific notes) rather than from that final chaotic shreddy section. Of course, it's good training for my hands, but learning that section didn't improve shit on my abilities, musically speaking. I repeat, I'm not saying we shouldn't practice on hard solos, all I'm trying to say is that solos like the one in this video aren't unimportant "easy shit", they do help more than what you think. P.S. Consider also that there are beginners in this community who need to start with easy solos, so if you are a virtuoso, you should know that not everyone is as good as you, there are plenty of people who need these kinds of solos.
@ilir966 жыл бұрын
J T You can't just label Marty as a "beginners channel" and Chris as a "shredder channel", there might be a lot of beginners who just prefer Chris' way of teaching over other KZbinrs, so why shouldn't Chris dedicate some time to those guys as well? Remember that these are public lessons, so you have to try to make happy both sides, beginners and advanced, because there are indeed beginners who just prefer Chris over Marty or anyone else. He can't dedicate his whole channel on making happy only one specific type of guitarists, he makes all these lessons about all these different solos, and it's up to us to decide which one to learn, but at least we have some variety and we can decide what to learn, that's something we should be grateful for. Like, if you are a teacher and you teach literature, you can't teach *only and exclusive* Shakespeare, you have to teach other stuff as well, even though the students might not be as interested as they are with Hamlet or with Romeo and Juliet. It's a teaching principle, teach all you've learnt, not only what they request, it's about education , not fan service.
@ilir966 жыл бұрын
J T I repeat, there are beginners who just prefer Chris, and you can't force them to watch Marty. Also, if you think that these easy but melodic solos don't make you better at anything at all, then I wouldn't be so sure about you being an advanced player. By learning slow solos, you'll learn to hear to the actual melody of the solo, instead of focusing on the movements of your hands. David Gilmour is nowhere near to being a technically good guitarist, but still he's one of the greatest guitarists ever. Comfortably Numb, Time, Stairway to Heaven, Little Wing, all these solos are easy to learn, but they are considered to be the greatest solos ever. How so? Well, there is a huge difference between "hard" and "good", not everything that is hard to learn is good and not everything that is good has to be hard to learn. Slow solos won't probably help you with your hand movements, but if you actually learn the solo for how good it is, instead of focusing on how easy or hard it is, you'll realise that you could learn even more from easy solos, and most of these easy solos sometimes aren't that easy at all. Like, look at Comfortably Numb, it seems to be so easy, but still there are so many shitty covers of that solo. You know, these slow solos are usually underestimated by beginners, especially by those ones who think they are good, that's the problem. Not to mention that the solo Chris is playing in this video is not easy at all, especially when it comes to creating solos, creating a solo like this is truly hard: The dude changes key right after the first lick, and still manages to make it sound cool, not to mention also that the whole thing is actually harmonised, the guy played two different solos, if not more, and overlayed the recordings and still managed to make it sound awesome. Chris is showing the easy part of the solo. It's not that hard to learn these songs, but I'd challenge you and everyone else who thinks this is easy, to create a song like this and a solo like this. Maybe stop learning solos and start improvising and making your own music, you'll be surprised when you'll realise how these slow solos will come out to actually be more useful than the hard ones.

Tried it, actually that 1 to 3 slide sounds more interesting. Though pretty good lesson. Though not sure what is happening on 15th fret G string, with the pre bends. Brian May is a genius. I believe it is bend that 15th fret, hit twice, then hit it with no bend, then pre bend, not bend and release as the tab says?
