Highest quality info I've seen on Steve's technique. If I may add two things that I also learned from using his unique method of anchorning the right hand: 1, allows one to hit strings very very lightly, and 2, it allows one to comfortably hold the bass a lot lower than most. Up the Irons!

Thank you for this. I hadn't seen someone dissect Steve Harris' technique like this before. My own "John Doe" plucking style has three possible anchor points depending on the bassline. It's either on the top pickup, on the E string, or on the A string with the first knuckle of my thumb against the E string to keep it quiet. No "duck-hand here! haha I'm going try that right hand arpeggio technique you demonstrated, looks like an easier anchor point than I usually use.

Awesome video! I've always wondered why it looks like Steve Harris is using a pick even though the sound is obviously fingerstyle. I'm going to see Maiden again on 8/19/19, I'll look for these descriptions! See my attempt at this sound on my channel. Something that isn't mentioned here is that the left hand muting also contributes to Steve's sound, as the muting between gallops creates space that emphasizes the first of the three notes when galloping. The video shows this is happening, it just isn't mentioned. Again great video, looking forward to many more! Up The Irons!!!

great video! its the clearest and best one I have found on the internet (it comes from a tribute band bassist nonetheless...) I have a couple questions: does playing "low", like with the full arm extended (like Steve plays) help so much? I find it helps getting less tired because the arm is relaxed, but im not so comfortable with the left hand. also, where do you usually play with your right hand? I tend to play very close to the bridge because that way the strings don't buzz too much. thank you and keep on with the great work!
4 жыл бұрын
Ciao Ettore! You're right what you gain on the right hand, you lose on the left. Just a measure of balance.. Only you can adjust it. Btw, Steve plays higher that I. My bass is very low, I don't mind for my left arm does the job. DG

Missing a rather important aspect of Steve's playing. His attack isnt plucking the strings vertically, he smashes downward through the string. That is where the signature Harris fret clack comes from.

Lol. I play like that. On every song. Not even Maiden. I have big heavy hands, even for a guy and everything gets clacking. Most of my playing is so hard it sounds like slap. I;m trying to learn to play lighter just so the speed is easier. The faster I play, the harder I play for some reason.

I am mostly self taught but ive had two previous teachers try to change my floating thumb/hand - which has become "habit" since day one. I quickly left both those teachers and continued on my own. Recently, i have met a new teacher who encourages my technique and seems to be interested in "why" i play this way. I have tendonitis and carpal tunnel - and this style is the only way for me to play mostly pain free. If it aint broke - dont fix it.

This is some great advice, thank you! I've been a bass player for years now and I consider my playing to be good - if it wasn't for the finger speed, I've been troubling with this since I first began playing and progressed little. Sucks to have that as your weakest point when you want to play Metal. I'm gonna try this out and see if I'll make progress, combining it with my favourite techniques! =) Also, if you hadn't said that you're french, I would have thought you were British, that's how perfect your English sounds, man! ;)

Don't shun a pick if you find you're better at it. I play with two fingers myself, but some people trash picks for no reason. Personally, I'm terrible with picks, but that's largely because I wanted to play with fingers and found I was pretty natural to it. Years of video games, perhaps. I started getting better with picks when I picked up guitar, but that's been put on the back burner and I've regressed in that regard again.
7 жыл бұрын
I can play both and love both, depends on the style and mood of the song. For instance, being a Green Day fan as well, playing GD with fingers would sound awful... I can do this technique perfectly now. Thank you! Also, a tip for anyone reading this who is just starting to learn the Steve Harris technique, a good song to start with is Stranger In A Strange Land. The intro starts with an open E and you can practice the gallop along to the song at a slower pace, this is the song that got me used to the way Steve Harris plays. Now thanks to the slower pace of that song, I can play Run To The Hills and other songs with a fast gallop. I hope this little tip of mine was helpful :)

@@nicoperez1031 It didn't take me that long but I'm one of those people who practices every single day in my free time haha. It took me about 2 - 3 weeks to get the technique down and then another 2 weeks to develop the speed. Also another tip is if you feel your fingers straining don't try and play through it, because that'll give them cramp and halt progress for about a week. So definately start off slow, that way you'll be playing the trooper and fast songs like that in about a month. Good luck man! Hope I helped!

Hey, thanks ! ;) I'm not a fan of Japanese brands of basses, even though mine was crafted there. I mean all these brands, though perfectly honest, sound the same and certainly not like Precision. My advice is that you get a Squier, budget wise it's a real deal and the sound will be close to the real PB. Only the craft is a bit underwater and their longevity, but they're excellent ratio compared to their prices. If I were you, i'd buy this one: amzn.to/3nhgLqM Take care. DG

Bass has thick strings and a big sonic variety with the harmonics being in the mid freq and very pronounced, so you can modulate your sound with the way you hit the strings greater than the most string instruments. So i think the anchored style is a stupidity if it is the norm, you can play closer or further to the bridge and you get so much flavour, you can hit with different force, different parts of the fingers, the whole hand, the nails, whatever suits your sound. Thank you for sharing this technique i ll try it. Also the thumb gently over the strings stops the ringing of them if the are not played (this is one reason why Steve and a lot of great bass players use it)

Very informative Dietier!! I tried the SH technique and it just doesn’t work for me. Maybe just have to get used to it. The “beginner” style is more comfortable but that SH technique sure sounds a lot better!!

perhaps the most complete insight on Steve’s technique! well done! do you think it is possible to sound like this also on a Geddy Lee Jazz bass?

Thank you ;) You'll never sound "Precision" with a "Jazz bass". These two models are really different. You might have a pretty honourable sound but you'll never get Steve's. You definitely need a PB. DG

Great Vid. I can't play exactly like him but I have my own kinda hybrid way of doing it that gets close to his sound. One thing's for sure, on riffs like Number Of The Beast, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, The Clairvoyant and such there's no way around keeping that index finger firing away like a jackhammer. When I'm playing Maiden stuff is the only time I really feel like playing fingerstyle bass. I bought a standard P-bass to have around just for the times I get in the mood!

Hi, I want to thank you for your Iron Maiden videos! They are very helpful. I have a question about the gallop. Does steve start with his middle or index finger? Is it 121 or 212? 1 being index and 2 being the middle finger. Also how do you work on your straight 16th notes speed?
7 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you ;) Welcome back here. As for the order of fingers, it depends on fact. It's automatically chosen by the subconscious mind according to the nature of what's being played....In order to play smooth 16th notes, you want to have both fingers on the same level. Therefore you must move your wrist to compensate their difference of length.

Brian McDermott I had the same question, but what I've seen from the trooper video and live footage it looks like he starts on the index (1-2-1)

Hi, big thank you for your little Steve Harris lesson! I have some questions about Steves technique regarding the gallop rhythm and fast 16th note runs. I watched your Run To The Hills Cover a little bit more closely. Did I observe correctly that for the gallop you plug the strings with index and middle finger for the two 16th notes and for the following 8th you're actually hitting the string on your way back with one of your finger nails? Like, you're doing two "downstrokes" (usual plugs with index and middel finger) with a following "upstroke", so to speak? That would explain the unbelievable fast gallop rhythm over such a long period of time without signs of fatigue. And furthermore, if that turns out to be the case, is there a similar approach for 16th note runs like the fast bridge part also in RTTH (just befor the final chorus)? I couldn't quite figure out what was happing in that part. Thanks for the help again and btw. I'm excited for your tutorial regarding the Steve Harris bass sound ;) Best regards!

Thank you very much for your message and gratitude ;) As to the technique I don't use nails at all. It's just the 8th-16th16th note rehearsed long enough to reach that speed. You can see the same kind of fast gallop in "Killers" pre-solo part. It's an ability that reveals itself only after a while. You just notice that your fingers move on their own, it's a subconscious gift ;) It's like drummers who all say that real independence of limbs suddenly come after a certain time of practice....and often by surprise ! Just play and play again at increasing speeds and if you place your right hand as I show it you MUST reach that speed too ;) You gave me an idea about making a video upon fingers alternance. Thanks again and up the irons ;) \m/

Hi, thanks for your quick response! I got that impression because in your RTTH cover it wasn't clear if you actually hit the strings three times with middle and index finger, but the strong and fast repositioning of the fingers gave the impression as if you're hitting the third time there. In the mean time I checked out your The Trooper cover and there it was actually possible to see that you alternate very fast between fingers and actually don't use your nails for an "upstroke" kind of motion. Almost a pity, I hoped to have found a shortcut to lighning fast gallop, haha :) Btw. I'm really impressed by your RTTH cover! I play Maiden on bass ever since I got one and although I would say I am quite fast with my right hand, fast gallop songs like RTTH or Caught Somewhere in Time give me a hard time holding speed. I have the strong feeling that might be because of my very hard and aggressive plugs, which probably takes too much energy over the duration of the songs. I play with relative low volume but hard plugs to get my sound. I heard Steve does it the other way around; he hits the strings rather lightly and lets the rest of the work the low action of the strings and the gain/ volume of the amp do. If you do a follow up vid that might be a topic worth diving into! Thanks again, your videos and replies are very helpfull! Best regards

Didier GÉRÔME ... I'm 45yrs old, been playing since age 10 or 11. Started learning to play Steve Harris in the first 6 months, every song, 15 to 18 hrs practice every day. When Eat'm and smile album come out with Billy Sheehan playing Elephant gun, in trying to learn it, I accidentally started plucking the strings going up, not just down, because I was trying to match Sheehan speed. I didn't know he used 4 fingers to pluck. Do You not also use this technique? I believe Steve does on many bars of music, especially the endings. Thanks Brother for the videos! Hey ! I sometimes use 3 fingers but I always state it clearly with titles so that watchers be not confused with Steve's own technique... which is with two fingers only (upon his own confession). Thanks for the compliment ;)
