Things a bit more in depth. (From a Lucas main) 1. Lucas’s PK thunder sends him twice as far as Ness’s 2. Lucas’s PK thunder doesnt do away after hitting an opponent 3. PK thunder moves slower 4. PK thunder does more damage 5. PK thunder does less knockback Now the non PK thunder stuff 6. The rope snake can be used in air 7. Rope snake is a better combo starter which I cant really explain unless I had some footage 8. Foward air is best kill option as if it hits large sweet spot it kills around 80% 9. Back air spikes if hit in sweet spot 10. Lucas is floatier than Ness because he doesn’t have a family weighing him down 11. F smash is a reliable reflector that comes out quick and has little start up and end lag 12. Lucas has low jump hight so he can’t reach Unova pokemon league and Kalos Pokemon league platforms 13. Down tilt then F smash is a kill confirm 14. If your off stage and the opponent is holding down smash or charging some other move then use PK freeze. Lucas has a great recovery but just in case have your double jump with you 15. When falling from above at ledge and the opponent is running towards you then use PK fire when your at an equal horizontal position with them 16. PK fire or F air when someone is offstage kills at very low pecentages 17. Down B can turn you around mid air By the way if anyone is a Lucas main or wants to main Lucas please play Mother 3. After playing the game I see why it hasn’t been localized and probably won’t be localized ever because Japan has different censors than America and nintendo doesn’t want to bother changing up the game. Papsi San it’s hard to space, and it’s pretty useless online if the opponent recovers low, but offline, if you can get get good at timing it, it’s a powerful two-frame that stays out a long time and is a semi-spike, and with good spacing you won’t get hit by most up-Bs or aerials.

If your facing the wrong way when offstage (in a scenario where you want to tether grab to the edge), you can actually turn around using his down b. Just hit down b and then immediately point the stick toward the stage and you'll be facing the stage and can tether; can't remember if that turn around technique has a name, but knowing that just gives you another option when trying to recover.

My personal tip on how to always be able to tether grab the ledge is that if you're facing the wrong way, yse PK Fire in the direction the stage is, as that will force Lucas to face in that direction, and if you're in the range for it, the tether grab recovery will work. The sweet spot for Lucas's back air is actually his toe on the model and hits best when his body is horizontal (so about frame 5 or 6). You can guarantee hit this with a full-hop fast fall given your spacing is correct. This is probably the one move where the shine effects aren't the best as they will send the enemy at a horizontal angle as opposed to a decent spike. Unless fighting a sword character, I personally think Lucas's back air is better in neutral for zoning just because of how fast the move comes out as well as the overall range. The forward air is really good if you can hit consistent sweet spots, but the back air's spike can lead to some really good followups at mid-percent and covers more of his body with little to no end-lag. (Also, you can turn Lucas around by angling the PSI Magnet mid air to make the rope recovery. Because it changes the gravity at which Lucas falls at, it's relatively safe to use given they're not Lucina or whatnot.)

As a Lucas main, here’s some tips I’ve learned: Air dodging is in general *EXTREMELY* helpful. Please please please use it if you are not as good with up b attacks, saved my butt a good few times starting out. If you are trying to neutral b someone far away while trying to avoid people in a 4+ person smash, do an neutral b and IMMEDIATELY tilt the joystick left after for maximum distance. As Choctopus said, down b is very useful in absorbing/healing from an opponents energy-based projectiles, as it can be the difference in getting ko’ed or not, *especially* if it’s a battle with no item spawns. However, try to not use it as much so you can have both a surprise factor and prevent people from getting smart and not using their projectile attacks. Hope this helps ya, fellow Lucas mains!

It's been over half a year since I started maining Lucas, and this guide was really helpful and contributed to me sticking with the character. I'd like to add some more tips for the character. 1: Jab kinda sucks. Should probably rarely use it because its weak, your opponent can fall out of it, and its unsafe on shield. There is one decent use for it (In addition to it being fast) that I'll talk about below. 2: D tilt leads to some pretty great followups, mainly F-tilt, Grab, and Jab. (You have to get lucky with opponent's DI for these next two, but you can mix it up with Down or F smash.) D tilt + Jab might be true (not 100%), but d tilt to grab is a true combo at 127 and higher. Since Lucas has 2 kill throws (Up and Back), this is a good confirm. Also D tilt is only frame 3, just as fast as Mr. Game and Watch's infamous Up B. 3: Dragdown Nair into d tilt is a combo into a combo. I personally suck at this, but You can also dragdown nair into U tilt. Not true, but close. 4: Lucas has a pretty advanced technique where called "Double Jump Cancel Zair" which can lead to some broken followups and damage if used at the right time. Don't want this comment to be to long, but look up "Kingofwizards Lucas guides" on youtube. He has incredibly in-depth and helpful tutorials on this and more. 5: PK Freeze is not just a huge meme and braindead move. Opponents that seem not great at defense techniques can fall for a mixup with it in neutral, but Its way better for edgeuarding. This is one of the character's AMAZING comeback tools, along with his deadly dair and bair that I can confirm kills Marth and Lucina at 0 if they try and counter PK Thunder 2 offstage. Finally, sorry to get political and serious, but Mother 3 isn't getting Localized because the world has too many butthurt millenials that can't take a joke. We can still hope, though. At least there's a fan translation!

Something that often works is to spam A until the opponent launches and falls on the floor, then you immediately charge down smash. Chances are, the opponent rolls right in front of you when you release the attack.

PK Thunder is incredible against anyone with predictable recovery’s like the Belmont’s or Chrom because it allows you to just carry them to the blast zone and not let them back. Basically when playing as Lucas, get your opponent in the air and use pk fire for some damage and keep them off of you, when they are off stage, you edge guard them with PK freeze and keep trying to freeze them.

PSI Magnet also does damage to an opponent inside of it. Not that it's ideal to use it that way but it's worth noting.
