How to Play Mariachi Guitar (Mariachi Basic Strumming Patterns)

This video will go over Rancheras, Polkas, Corridos, Boleros, Cumbias, Huapangos, Joropo, Sones, and Jarocho. These are all explained at the most simplest level and as fast as I could to make it clear but speedy. I do want to note that the beautiful genre is not just these strumming patterns, it is a genre that must be respected and cherished by those all over the world. Personally I am not a professional and just like anyone else, my mistakes are human. I hope you enjoy this video, there is MUCH MUCH more to mariachi music than just these basic strumming patterns and i encourage everyone to explore the Mariachi music. Most people that play average guitar may say that, but if you play mariachi guitar, and you observe most professional players, they use picks because of the playing style. Mariachi guitar is rhythmic. It does not make up the melody. But you can go ahead and try if you feel more comfortable that way.

It's up to the musician, really. I play these rhythms with my fingers, but most contemporary mariachi guitarists use a pick, and there's nothing wrong with that. Mariachi guitar is, for the most part, rhythmic and percussive, but it's certainly not unheard of for a mariachi guitarist to have an excellent command of melody licks and solos. Rafael Palomar of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán is a master of the instrument who is excellent at playing guitar solos and melodic passages (although most of his playing is firmly grounded in the rhythm).
