I've been playing various percussion instruments for about 20 years now and I've never heard this explained so strangely. Just count 4, kick on 1 and 3 snare on 2 and 4, eighth notes on hihat.

I’ve found with my students that this method of conceptualizing the beat is much easier. Instead of having to think what number they’re on and counting “one and two and…” it’s much easier for them to memorize three separate pieces and put them together. Once they understand this and get to playing on a kit, then I teach them the proper terms and they play it that way from then on.

@@danmoar94 ​ everyone starts on different levels. Some people just have to work their way up. and as a teacher you need to have different levels for different students. And saying that someone has no business being a musician because they have to start at an easier level is a rude thing to say. It also shows your lack of perspective/understanding. We all gotta start somewhere, including you. No need to shame that. I’m not sure if you play and instrument but if you are on the level where you can start teaching others I would encourage you to try it out and see how it goes. You’ll lean a lot.

I've taught thousands of beginning drummers in my career as a classroom music teacher. If you want to eventually scale up a student's coordination to more complex drum set patterns within the standard 3-point position (3-point is Right Hand on Hi-Hat, Left Hand on Snare, and Right Foot on Kick), I would suggest moving away from using fruit as a physical cue. In my experience, it's better to connect each student to their body using more intuitive physical directions. Try these... Right Hand = "Right" Left Hand = "Left" Right Foot = "Foot" Both Hands = "Hands" Right Hand + Right Foot = "Right Side" Left Hand + Right Foot = "Slash" or "Cross" or whatever signifies being on opposite sides of the body All Three Limbs = "triangle" (because it visual resembles a triangle when you connect the 3 points together). Also, while you're at it, I would suggest using a more gradual approach to increasing tempo. I have my students get comfortable at each tempo before pushing it faster. I understand that speeding up like that was for humor, but in a classroom or private lesson setting, it promotes impatience as a standard practice. Have your students groove each pattern with their eyes closed until they look/sound/"feel" comfortable in the groove, then speed up 5 ticks and repeat the process.
