You have 3D4D 3B4B at the very end but it seems as if you don't play that when you're going through it. It seems you end on the 4B5B 4B5B. I have to admit I used to play this song on the old Gob Iron many moons ago and having just recently brought a new harmonica brace I thought I would play it again and all of a sudden I noticed something was not quite right and I was puzzled as to what on earth was wrong. Having read some of the comments here I noticed that you did mention in reply to one of them that your were using a 10 hole diatonic harmonica and that perhaps explains the trouble I am having only now only having an 8 hole Harp in the key of G to which you would have to start the song off by drawing on the 3rd hole and not blowing on the 5th like you did here. I must have had a 10 hole harp when I played years ago because with only 8 holes you will soon run out of notes and there is no way of even bending them to fit either. So I guess I will have to get a new harp.

Thanks for this! I've been asked to do a few acoustic Neil numbers to open for a live electric band doing a bunch of his songs on his birthday coming up in a couple of weeks and I need all material that they're not doing so my options are limited and this lesson helps me out quite a bit. Is there any chance you could do another short one for Mr. Soul from the Unplugged performance? The guitar is in double drop D and I keep reading the harp is in G but as simple as it sounds I can't seem to get my arms around it. There's only a few notes but they're drawn out and mournful so the intonation is really important.

My set list at this point: World on a String Mr. Soul Heart of Gold Old Man Needle and the Damage Done It only took me a few minutes to get the hang of Heart of Gold and after a bit of practice I feel really good about it but I'll be danged if I can even find a starting point for either Mr. Soul or World on a String, at least with a G harp. Hi Liam. You are such a good beginner teacher. I have moved on to guitar from the harmonica. I’m guessing the song on the guitar is in the key of Em and G is the relative major key for Em? Is that the reason why it is played on a G harmonica. I was thinking I may have to try and buy a Em harp. I’m not even sure it exists 🤔 to play it in the 1st position. Hi Elijah, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes you're right that the scales for G major and E minor contain the same notes - they are relative keys. They do actually make Em harps - Lee Oskar make a lot of minor-tuned harps - but that isn't what Neil Young uses for this song, it's just a G harp. Cheers. Liam

Hi Carter Man - if you listen to people like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Springsteen etc you will notice that not all their notes are clean. It's just a case of making your mouth a little wider so it's less accurate. You can experiment with doing it more on certain notes and see what works for you. It's all part of the folky style. Hi Liam, I notice that a lot of Neil Young, Tom Petty, and Rolling Stones (Sweet Virginia) songs that have harmonica solos in them are not played with clear notes, but rather "messy" as you call it. Is that intentional on the part of the artists? I've tried to replicate that "messy" sound but it sounds terrible. I actually like that messy sound on some songs, but how do they get it and still make it sound good? Thanks.

Hi Bob, thanks for the question. Often it's a case of playing the guitar and harmonica at the same time, so the harp is in a rack and it's harder to get clean notes because you're multi-tasking. Sometimes it just sounds bad, but if you pick your moments then the adjacent notes will harmonise (hence harmoni-ca) so it can sound sweet. Try to relax because forced air will make the chords sound horrible. Also if your harp is even slightly out of tune then it will sound rough. It's not to everyone's taste but it's often the sound people want in a folky sort of context. Cheers, Liam

Hi Muriel, thanks for watching. / (forward slash) is a semitone (half step) bend, so // is two semitones (a full tone, or full step) bend. And the brackets (d-d) are articulations with the tongue, so you move your tongue to imitate a "d-d" shape so that the note has a "d-d" sound. I hope that makes sense. Thanks again for watching! Welcome to the world of harmonica Kyle! I mainly use Hohner Special 20s and Marine Bands although Seydel, Suzuki and Lee Oskar make great harps too. I usually say that any harmonica over £20 (or the equivalent currency) is a good standard. Good luck and keep blowing!

Hi Bob, the problem is you need the correct key to play this tab along with the song. You could try to work out how to get some of the notes on your C harmonica, but it would be a different tab, so you either need to improvise a tab of your own on, for example, your C harp, or you need to buy a G!

Hi Kenneth, Thanks for the comment. 'Draw' means to breathe in on the harmonica, so that the air vibrates the 'draw' reed (which gives you a different note from when you blow). You want a ten hole diatonic harmonica for these lessons. I started out using Hohner Big Rivers but a lot of it is down to personal choice and there are good options from Seydel, Suzuki and Lee Oskar too. With my new students I usually use a rule of thumb of £20 or more is a good harmonica. Hope this helps! Liam

Kenneth Williamson I started out using Hohner Big Rivers but a lot of it is down to personal choice and there are good options from Seydel, Suzuki and Lee Oskar too. With my new students I usually use a rule of thumb of £20 or more is a good harmonica. Hope this helps! Liam

Forget about the "B" for blow. Just use the hole number for blow, then use a dash or minus for a draw like say -4 for draw hole 4. Easier to understand and more standard these days. Also, you missed the intro which is the signature piece?

+El Torino Hi there, I actually do a mixture of both but I lip-pursed for many years before getting into tongue-blocking.
