I'm an airplane pilot and I'm grounded due to covid19, so instead of watching netflix during all day long, I've decided to learn something new. And moreover, I'm brazilian, so my first language is portuguese, then I'm using my time to learn about piano and to improve my english as well. Thanks Bill for the lessons! I have to admit that it's a little bit hard; I had tried Simply Piano before your channel, but I didn't feel that I was actually learning something. Here I am! So thanks again and stay home!!

I'm actually doing this, starting today. I have finished lesson one and now starting level three on lesson two. This is exactly what I was looking for, and now I will finally start actually learning piano instead of playing songs on mechanical muscle memory. Thank you for making this, I will be studying it each day. (I might even comment on my progress)

One thing I have noticed that helped me is how each note will alter from being on a line and then on a space in the next octave. The middle c is on a line under the staff, the next C is on a space in the staff, the next one is back on a line. The same is true for all notes. It's another hint to make it easier to remember where each note is. I recommend hitting the keys and imagining in your mind where it is on the staff. Keep doing this for every note again and again and eventually it will start to really settle in your head. I'm still a beginner but this has helped!

Hi Bill, I hope you are still viewing your comments. I am 65 years old and my entire life have wanted to learn the piano. I remembered sitting on the front step of my best friends home listening to her take piano lessons and wishing we had a piano so that I could take lessons. I bought myself a keyboard in my 30's and tried to learn with a book but raising children made this impossible so I gave up. I have been struggling over the last 10 years with illness and sadly all my attention has been focused on trying to make it through a day relatively pain free. I finally decided I need something else to focus on that would bring me joy and so I said to myself, "What about piano lessons?". The blessings of HaShem fell upon me immediately when I found your youtube and I want you to know that this gift that you have given to so many is so valuable. I went out and bought myself a keyboard yesterday and started this morning! May you be blessed for being such a blessing! Shalom from Jerusalem!

I certainly am still viewing them - shalom from North Yorkshire! It always absolutely makes my day to hear that my videos are helping people, so thanks very much for letting me know. Good luck with the rest of the course, and please do let me know if you have any questions or run into difficulties. Long experience of seeing people going through this course suggests that those who do best are the ones who really nail down the basics and do lots of reinforcement practice of the first few lessons - that means you have a strong foundation for when things start to get a bit trickier, around lesson 9. So try to practise every day if you can, and really work hard at memorising stuff like note names on the keyboard and in treble and bass staves - it makes things way easier later on. Behatzlacha!

Having another go at learning piano with your tutorials. Have had my keyboard for two years and made the mistake of trying to copy tutorials for specific songs I liked without really learning or practising basics. Had limited success but failed when songs became a little more difficult. This time I’m going to take my time and practise basics every day before moving to next lesson. I have a love of music and a ear for music but my 65 year old fingers couldn’t care less. Wish me luck.

Good luck! Yes, you've got the right idea: racing through the early lessons is one of the most common problems I see learners have. If you take the time to really master each lesson, you'll find that progress is much steadier. And don't worry about your age - you're a teenager compared to some of the people I hear from who use my tutorials!

Hi Bill, thank you so much for this series. It has been almost 7 years since you uploaded this and I can't imagine the number of people you have taught and helped and from multiple geographies too! What I loved the most is how you made me associate "oh it's so hard and frustrating" feeling to something positive - my brain creating new circuitry and being familiar with the subject. I embrace that feeling not only with piano but with whatever I am learning and it helps me to keep pushing through and not drop things out of frustration.
@BillHilton

Thank you! Yes, I like to think it’s helped a few people. I tried doing some rough maths on this the other day, based on how many people have watched the final few videos in the series, and making allowance for random watches/curiosity/revisits etc. Anyway, I think the number of people who have actually completed is into the thousands - around five thousand, perhaps, which I’m pretty happy about. I hope you make good progress yourself - let me know how you get on!

the entire playlist is perfect but sorry to say this particular video is really confusing considering this is made for beginners. you shouldve told the types of clef and how the lines and spaces differ and how the ledger lines also differ!! ex: Ledger Lines Above: starting just above the top line of the TREBLE staff (G). >A>B>C>D>E vs Ledger Lines Below: starting just below the bottom line of the TREBLE staff (E), >C>B>A>G>F. for bass clef ; Ledger Lines Above: starting just above the top line of the BASS staff (B). >C>D>E>F>G vs Ledger Lines Below: starting just below (G), >F>E>D>C>B . also the order of line and spaces differ in bass and treble clef! But overall a great video! Thankyou!

I'm picking up piano again in my mid 30s after having has lessons when I was 5-7 years old. I learned how to read sheet music back then and couldn't play very complicated stuff but I had music books for the first couple of grades and I could play all the songs in there from the sheet music relatively easily. Your explanation of EGBDF brought back so many memories and as soon as I saw it I said the phrase "Every Good Boy Deserves Food" and had a wave of nostalgia since that must have been the phase my piano teacher taught me back in the day to learn the treble clef. Amazing what your mind can remember and I'm finding myself picking things up that I haven't done in almost 30 years! Can't wait to follow along with the whole course and I hope I can get to be as good as I was when I was 7 years old again haha.
@BillHilton

Good to hear! That's the amazing thing about stuff you learn at that age: it sticks at a very deep level. You'll probably find that you actually have a small advantage in terms of physical playing over an absolute beginner at the same age as you, purely because you did that early work. Good luck, let me know how you get on and don't hesitate to shout if you have any problems/questions!

I just started learning a few days ago, I am on only the second lesson! I have always been the most frustrated piano player! Always wanted to learn but was always intimidated by reading music, it might as well be chinese to me. I pray I don't loose heart and can make it through! Been wanting to play since childhood, now closer to 60! I will learn....I want to play just that much...thank you for these lessons!!!

You're welcome Michelle - I hope you continue to make good progress! And if you're close to 60, then you're still young compared to many of the learners I hear from, so stick at it!

When I first tried the exercise I found it so difficult and I was going to just stop trying, but I really want to learn how to play so I continued trying and now it’s not too difficult at all and I’m glad I stuck with it!

Glad to hear it, Jessica - that's often the way things go in the early days of learning: you work and work and work at something and it seems impossible, then *ping* you just get it. If you need any help or have any questions at any stage, just give me a shout.

@@BillHilton Thanks Bill! I’m currently on lesson 6 but I always go back to previous lessons too. One thing I’m struggling on is reading the sheet music while playing at the same time, I usually just end up memorising what’s on the sheet and the fingering and then playing it, how do I improve on that? Thanks 🙏🏾
@BillHilton
@BillHilton 3 жыл бұрын
@@jessicamarie6448 You’re welcome! The short and boring answer to the sheet music thing is “just keep doing what you’re doing”. Everyone except the very best sightreaders (and I’m not one of those...) uses partial memorisation to some extent, so it’s not something to worry about. As you work on an increasing variety of music you’ll find that the amount you have to memorise gradually lessens. At this stage, though, it’s all about gritting your teeth, digging deep and pushing through stuff that (for now) seems tough. If you want some practice tips, you might find this tutorial useful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpycoK2IZ9eDhbM

Was a player 15 years ago and then I just stopped playing. Bought a new instrument recently to restart the old hobby but OMG I did not remember a thing! Your video is super good , just to revive those knowledge except that I actually learned the notes not by alphabets but as do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti , therefore abit challenging now but i am sure i catch up with a little practice. Just wanted to say Good Job! Very nice tutorial :)

Thanks Josh! You have a few options - my bundle of piano ebooks is available at www.billspianopages.com/bundle though you do need to be able to read score in treble and bass clef to get the most out of them. Right now, the most useful book for you might be my recent How To Be A Better Musician, which has loads of stuff on practice approaches, learning efficiency etc. You can find that at www.bettermusicianbook.com (ebook only at the moment: print edition coming in a couple of months!)

I'm an 18 y/o, recently started singing lessons but I feel like I know ✨nothing✨ about music so here I am. I'm literally using a piano app in my tablet, pray for my soul, but this is fun still.

Excellent - well done, and keep working away at this stuff (and at the singing lessons). Piano apps can work well; another option that some people have used successfully in the past is to draw a keyboard on a big piece of paper and practise on that until they have access to a real piano/keyboard. Like I say, keep going, good luck, and let me know if you run into any problems or have any questions!

I just wanted to say, I have subscribed to your channel for a while. Practiced octaves, major scales, hand independence, etc.., But dreaded learning reading music sheets, and I must say that it isn't half as boring as I thought. Also the way you show takes the boringness out. I want to thank you for the time you put in this. I went to just wanting to play by eye to wanting to learn music from scratch in general, all because of you. You inspired me to go further into the music area alot more. Thank you again sir

APPRECIATE you for doing this!!! I am so happy that I found your channel :) Just have one doubt, I am learning my piano on a 61 key piano ( Yamaha e373). . Would it be sufficient to learn all your basic lesson? Thanks!

Bill, I have followed you for years! Best presentations on the web. Thank you for posting this new series for us "play by ear" folks. The quality is top notch! Bill do you mind sharing your recording set up? What specific camera, mic, sound processing do you use? You always strike a perfect balance between the sound of your piano and your voice! Great production! 😊

Thanks very much for the kind words - I'm really glad you like my stuff. It's taken quite a bit of trial and error to get to where I am - as you can probably tell if you've seen any of my earliest tutorials. Re: my setup, I actually have a full tutorial explaining it. I keep it unlisted, as I think it's kind of long and technical and not of interest to most people who view my channel (I may change my mind on this one of these days...). But you're very welcome to take a look. Hopefully you'll find it useful :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hp-7doyDqqehqq8
