Wish I had found your channel about two years ago when I started playing keyboard. Looks like I will be spending quite a bit of time here going through videos and also hope to grab a copy of your book.

I played trumpet in the 3rd grade and the only thing I really remember about reading music was that the lines were Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge and as you said the spaces are FACE. Really enjoying these. Spending about a week on each lesson so far. Thank you.

I really appreciate the distinction you make between having a goal Vs having a pathway to achieving it and, in that context, the value of following a course. This video is information rich and full of good advice. Thanks Bill.

Very useful tutorial. Thank You. (I m playing a couple of pices, but i cant dig my fingers depper between black keys, not even E,F or B,C, (without pressing an other one next to it.)my hand is 13+ and very difficult to find a good fingering sometimes.and this affects the speed and the tension,)

A few days ago I bought a medium priced keyboard. As a Pensioner I cannot afford much. Thank you for your free lessons. I appreciate that !! Erich from NEW ZEALAND.

Yes, dear friend. I am a Pensioner of 76 years old. I am determined to follow ALL OF your lessons. You are a very good teacher. I last took piano lessons when I was 10 years old. It was a disaster! My mother bought a brand new piano for nought!! The music teacher could not teach at beginners level!! So my poor mother had to resell our piano!! I felt so sorry for her! But I love music and I knew One-day I will try music again. And today's the day!!! Erich in NEW ZEALAND.

A moment of silence for the people who didn’t make it
Finally on my 3rd lesson I spent way too much time on the first two 😂
@BillHilton2 күн бұрын
Well done! And that’s not a problem - the people who run into difficulties seem to be the ones who really race through the first few lessons because they seem easy, but then don’t have a strong foundation when things get more challenging later in the course. If you really drill down hard into the first six lessons or so and learn everything in them until it’s second nature, that’ll give you a fantastic grounding that makes things much easier later on. Good luck, and let me know how you get on!

I've just started your beginners course on January 1. Bet you can't guess my New Year's resolution for this year. I've had exactly 5 piano lessons in my entire life and 4 of those the teacher showed up late for. I do however play guitar, ukulele, and banjo so I've been using the metronome on my electric piano as I am going through lesson one and finding the notes on the keyboard with every finger. I'm glad my past experience has kept me from this mistake already.
@BillHilton2 күн бұрын
Good luck, and let me know how you get on! I’ve talked to a lot of people who have been through the course, and the ones who finish tend to be those (I think) who are very diligent about the first few lessons and learn the very basics good and hard, so that they become instinctive. So keep plugging away!

Do those right hand notes work over all of the chords because they’re in the keys scale? I have very limited music theory knowledge being quite new to piano and a couple months into guitar. Your beginner lesson course has been a wonderful introduction to the instrument!
@BillHilton3 күн бұрын
Basically, yes! Or, at least, they sound OK because they're in the key's scale. As a general rule, anything from the major scale of a key will sound at least OK, most of the time, over most chord progressions (unless they start using chords outside of the key). Sometimes the fourth and seventh notes can cause problems. Even safer is the pentatonic scale (for the major pentatonic, just take the fourth and seventh out of the regular major scale). A key thing, though, is that when you're improvising no notes are "wrong"... it's just that some have different effects from others. If you wanted a really crunchy sound, you might well play Ab and Db over a C chord. They key thing is always to use your ears and listen to what sounds like what on the piano keyboard. I'm really glad you're enjoying the beginners' series. Stick at it, and let me know how you get on!

How long would this take on average?
@BillHilton3 күн бұрын
It's hard to say, but I've talked to a lot of people who have been through the course, and the median seems to be around 10 months. However, I've known people do it successfully in six, but also take 18-months to two years (I should really do a survey...). I wouldn't judge yourself on speed, though, and in particular it's important to resist the urge to whizz through the early material that seems easy - it's essential to get that stuff nailed down. Good luck, and let me know how you get on!

Bill , My Casio has only 19 keys so when I play the piece the notes keep jamming into each other. I m modifying the sheet music a little for now but will it cause problems in the future?
@BillHilton3 күн бұрын
My golden rule is always "work with what you've got!" so I would say do what you can with your 19 keys, but explore ways of getting access to something bigger. Ideally at some point in the future you'll be able to get an actual 88 key piano with sustain pedal, but until then there are lots of things you can do: ask people and places that have pianos if you can have occasional practice on them; buy something maybe just a bit bigger, perhaps second hand; or even draw full-sized keys on bits of paper and use those (I know a guy in Rio who literally did that, and it took him a long way). Some combination of those strategies will do the job - like I said, always work with what you've got. You'll be amazed what you can do with very simple kit. Good luck and come back to me with any further questions or if you run into problems with future tutorials in the series!

@@BillHilton when I get to complicated pieces, like fur Elise or rondo alla turca , will it pose a major problem
@BillHilton3 күн бұрын
@ Much more so than now, yes - ideally for those pieces you need a weighted, touch sensitive keyboard and a sustain pedal (or a real piano!). However, like I said, until you have one of those, do everything you can with what you’ve got - you can learn a lot of theory and really drill down some basic physical skills with a small keyboard. The secret of success, as in any field, is to say “what CAN I do with what I’ve got?” rather than focusing on what it sends you can’t do. Yes, for now you’re going to have challenges someone with a full size piano won’t have, but just getting on with the job can make up for many of those. Does that make sense?

I know how to read a bit of sheet music (due to being in choir before) and play songs like ode to joy, or happy birthday but I really want to play “when you wish upon a star”. You must have a passion and the patience to see improvement! Good luck everyone ☺️

8:00 this instantly made me think about the Batman soundtrack! P.s. Loving this course, it’s taking me longer than I thought it would to get through it, but I went back to the pieces from the earlier lessons and realised how much progress I’ve made!
@BillHilton2 күн бұрын
Thanks Jack! Yep, looking back at earlier stuff can be a big morale-booster. Btw, a good tip at this stage is to really revise and drill down stuff from earlier lessons. I've recently made a couple of tutorials about things I've learned from people going through the course, and you'll probably find them useful if you haven't already seen them - this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHvaimeAeqxslbs and this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHuUnH2cqJyVfcU -- good luck, and keep me posted with your progress!

Amazing tutorial. One question. How often and how long should you practise
@BillHilton2 күн бұрын
Good question! Regularity is the thing: it’s better to do a relatively short amount of piano practice every day, or six days a week, than to do two huge chunks a week. At this stage if you’re doing somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes a day that’s probably ideal. What also matters is the quality of the practice: during that time it helps to be really focussed and testing yourself. Does that help?

77 years old now and restarted piano 3 years ago. Alfred books and grade study books were what I used. Than last year things got complicated and for sure I stopped practicing scales and arpeggios etc. So I gave up playing temporarily. I felt I had no "road map" any more. Thank you so much for inspiring me to not throw in the towel but buckle up and do the exercises. Maybe by the time I am 80 I can play Claire de Lune. 😊
@BillHilton2 күн бұрын
The road map really is the thing that makes the difference, I think. One advantage you have is a clear goal: play Clair de Lune before you hit 80. The thing to do is focus on the skills that are going to get you there - scales, easier classical pieces etc - which also give you clear intermediate goals. One trick I’ve learned is not to set over ambitious deadlines for goals, but rather to instil the habits (eg daily scale practice) that make those goals happen. James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits” has been a pretty big influence on that regard. Good luck!

Really enjoying these tutorials and the exercises. Your advice to have short but consistent practices is spot on. Keeps from getting bored and I'm amazed at how much better I am every time I step up to the keyboard! Question though: I'm finding when reading the sheet music, I'll figure out the first note in the bar and then for the next one just think "oh well, that's one key up" without naming the new note. Am I shortchanging myself on the practice or is that a reasonable shortcut to make?
