Well done Jerald. I have been teaching myself from books, and it’s always driven me nuts that every time someone showed a new technique I had to learn a new tune. As a beginner I wasn’t smart enough to know I didn’t need to do that. I often thought that wh3n I figured it out I would write a book with one song played 100 different ways, an$ you’ve done it. Thanks. I’m off to Amazon now.......what a wonderful world we live in. I’ve discovered it ordered it and paid for it and now awaiting delivery, all on my iPad in 5 minutes.

THE BOOK ROCKS! Jerald, once I started playing, "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" in a minor key using E flat, A flat, and B flat I was hooked, and I turned another corner with improvisation. So much fun. This is a good example how sometimes I can't see what is right in front of my face (symptom of mild autism for me). Jerald how old were you when you feel like you went from being good to be a professional? Was that feeling synonymous with what others were telling you? Thanks Jerald. Peace! Dale

Totally mind blowing what is possible! To take a simple composition like Bach's Minuett or the Largo from the New World Symphony and play it in such a beautiful and moving way, it is seriously impressive. I just bought this book, and have so much fun with it. Tks JS . It is awesome for songs in 4/4 rhythm. There are a few of 3/4 patterns. I picked out 2 or 3 best patterns in each section & try to memorize them. However, if your song is in 3/4 , 6/8.... you have to know how to change it into 4/4. It requires higher level of music theory knowledge. For now, I wish he will publish another 100 patterns book for those compound rhythms, or video to show us how to change the rhythm of the song. And, the embellished techniques for the right hand book would be a complete set. 😊

Sounds good. The caveat is that it takes a lot of time and effort to practise everything in all 12 keys. For adult learners I think this depressingly standard advice might be self-defeating as we simply do not have the time and are likely to get discouraged and give up because really if you practice everything in all 12 keys how long is it going to take to plough through all exercises? I forget exactly who but one of the world's greatest songwriters could only play in one key. Back in early twentieth century. Edit - it was Irving Berlin.
@JeraldSimon
@JeraldSimon 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. It definitely is not a requirement to play everything in every key, but I do strongly recommend doing it. I don't want anyone to feel discouraged at all. I don't expect piano players to instantly be able to play in every key or spend all of their time trying. I apologize if it sounded like that. Being able to play something in all key signatures was something my father challenged me to do when I was younger (he had been a professional musician and wanted me to be able to take a song and transpose it to any key signature). I'm grateful I learned how to do it and do challenge my own students to try to play their songs in other key signatures, but I understand not everyone has the time to do it. It's fun to try for those who do have the time. I know it takes some time, initially, to learn the key signatures but the pattern is the same so once you know the key signature, the scale, and the patterns, it's pretty easy to do. I usually tell students just to take everything up half a step at a time and only try one key change in the beginning. Some students do and some students don't and that's perfectly fine. I completely understand either way. I know many great pianists who only play in one key signature and they are fantastic. I personally love playing in all key signatures and enjoy composing in every key signature as well because different key signatures have a different sound and feel for different genres and styles of music (and for my voice range when I am singing my songs as well - I will compose the songs in the key that is the best range for my voice). If you'd like to, you can visit this link on my website to download some free piano music I have composed: musicmotivation.com/product-category/free/ - I hope you have a wonderful day! @@AG-ur1lj Thank you for your comment and kind words. I do my best to try and respond to everyone - if I can, but sometimes it takes me a little longer to get back in touch with everyone. I think everything you said is absolutely fantastic and great, sound advice everyone should remember. I loved everything you said, especially: "The most helpful advice that I’ve ever received as a fellow adult-leaner would be this: have a goal. A song or handful of songs you want to learn, an ability you cover, perhaps maybe you just want to to be able to improvise. Then, only work on the most useful information you find, and do it in a way you find the most useful to you. Once you reach your short-term goal, rinse and repeat. You will never be as good as you want to be, nobody is. After all, it’s the aspiration to play something you cannot play that started your musical journey and there’s no reason to think that the same mentality won’t continue to motivate you to progress. But at the same time, if you stick with learning the next accessible step until you master it for a year or two, you will always find yourself playing something you did not think you would be able to play a year or two ago." There is so much to learn on the piano - or any instrument for that matter, and as we continue to learn, we will get better and improve on our own time-table. The key is to have FUN and enjoy what we are doing. I tell students and even piano teachers, that if they are not having fun doing something, they need to step back and remember to play for the fun of it. It's in sharing our love of music with others and how making our own music or playing our favorite music makes us feel in the process. That is the key. It helps us enjoy the process of learning scales and chords and understanding how all of the pieces fit together. It's a fun musical journey we can enjoy throughout our lives. Thank you again for comment. I hope you have a wonderful day!

I'm an adult beginner with about 9 dedicated months of practice. You're all correct. I don't have the time to sit and drill through scales, arpeggios, inversions, etc in all 12 keys but I can see how much better of a player I'd be if I did. So my approach has been to work on a couple keys at a time depending on the pieces I wanted to learn. The songs that I REALLY wanted to learn ended up being in C maj/A min, C# min, Db maj, Eb min (Moonlight Sonata, Prelude 28 no20, Prelude 28 no 4, Waltz 17, Clair de Lune, a few others). So now I'm pretty familiar with reading/playing those keys and similar keys now. If I had a burning passion to play other songs I would have learned those keys instead. Just my experience.

@@JeraldSimon I too truly appreciate your dedication and effort. I am 71 and just starting. I played alto sax in high school so the treble was not too difficult. I had a couple of lessons and then the pandemic stopped it for now. There is so much out there online to learn it is confusing but I really enjoy your style. This book is amazing. I'm playing piano up to grade 6 so far where basically you learn scales and 3 classical pieces, along with theory and aural tests. However....I could not sit in front of a song with chords like a Dylan song or standards and play the song I would just stab the left hand chord or play octaves whilst the right played yhe vocal melody which sounds thin and bland. Now I feel like I could take a fake book or lead sheets and play any song and it would dound interesting to the listener.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, you can invert the chord and keep the melody on the top with the right hand. If you were playing a C Major chord with the right hand and wanted to play the C as part of the melody, then you would put the C on top and play E and G below it. The C Major chord is now in first inversion because the C is on top. You can do this with every chord. Let me know if you have any questions about anything or need help with anything. Thanks - Jerald

@@JeraldSimon Hye Jerald, I have been studying your book and i got a couple of questions : 1. When a pattern is made of multiple chords, say C F G. Am I supposed to transpose the pattern to fit a different chord than C behind the melody (ex : F chord, D min) ? 2. In the contemporary patterns (60ish), each four bars is a little different (ex : 1 5 8 9 10, 1 5 8 9 10 12, etc...). Should I play the full 4 bars pattern as is, or should I pick the bar I like the best ? 3. How do you handle patterns with b6, b7 tones when transposing into a other chords ? Ex : 1 b3 5 b7 b6 5. Let's say the chord is bVI (Ab Maj) under the melody. Should I play some kind of 1 3 5 7 6 and try to land on notes that are in the C minor scale ?
@JeraldSimon
@JeraldSimon 5 жыл бұрын
@@1TreukFlyyy Thank you for your message. Sorry it has taken me a few days to get back to you. When you play with multiple chords, I always encourage students to learn how to play the chords in every inversion so they can play the chord with the right hand while keeping the melody on top. This way your left hand is free to improvise and arrange. You can also begin by playing the chords with the left hand but then begin playing with the right hand. When adding the left hand patterns, simply begin with the left hand pattern on whatever the chord note is and play it as you would starting on C. I encourage the students to learn all of these patterns in every key signature moving up in half steps. The pattern remains the same, but the starting note changes. In answer to your second questions, the contemporary patterns essentially have four different variations of the same pattern. You can use each individual measure on it's own and you do not need to play all four measures back to back. I wanted to demonstrate the primary left hand pattern and various patterns that can be created from the one pattern. You can use them all together or individually. In answer to your last question, the pattern still remains the same when transposing to other key signatures - even when playing the b6, b7 tones and beyond (b10, etc.). All you are doing flatting the degree of the scale. In the key of C, you would flat the A and the B (the 6th, and 7th tones from the major scale). In the Key of D, for example, I would flat the B (the 6th - playing B flat), and the C sharp (the 7th - playing C natural). In truth, it is all about taking the knowledge of the scales and chords - in all keys - and taking these patterns and being able to play them in all keys. I just did a workshop at a music store and filmed the video. You can watch that workshop at this link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnfHioejqrOSfrM - I also did another workshop at a different music store last week that I have not yet added to KZbin, but will soon. In both videos I teach a little about changing keys and practicing the patterns starting on every note on the piano. I hope these suggestions help. Let me know. Thanks - Jerald

Where can I purchase this book in spiral bound format
@JeraldSimon
@JeraldSimon 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. In the past I did sell the spiral bound book from my website, but stopped selling the spiral bound book because there was more demand for the paperback and ebook versions. Currently I will purchase the books from Amazon as a paperback and simply take it into a local print supply company like Staples or Alphagraphics (those are some nearby me - you can take it to any company that does printing and they should be able to bind it for $2 or $3 dollars). I prefer the spiral binding because it keeps the book open and lays flat on the piano. I hope that helps. Hi Gerald, I have tried to purchase you book through Amazon, but unfortunately when it arrived I was devastated to find that inside the cover. There were completely blank pages only page numbers, I reported this to Amazon and ordered another only to find exactly the same problem, I now have the task of sending both books back to Amazon. Completely gutted so much wanted to be able to see what your tuition was all about, I do watch the videos, but as I'm getting on a bit would have liked to have been able to have a book to refer to when away from the piano. As you are in America sending to the states to get one is a problem as extra postage means more expense and as a senior citizen funds are very limited, but thought you would like to know the problem, as there are probably many more disapointed potential customers over here who are having the same problem with Amazon. Best wishes Julie

Julie, I am so sorry to hear about that. Amazon prints the books and ships them, so that is something that must be happening on their end. I don't know why that would happen, but I will look into it and see what I can find out. In the meantime, if you send me a personal message through this link on my website: musicmotivation.com/contact-jerald/ - I will email you a PDF copy of the book so you can at least look through the book until the problem is corrected. I am so sorry that this has been happening to you. I have not heard about this from anyone else, but I will see if we can correct this situation. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will contact Amazon and find out about this. Thanks again! - Jerald

The problem is with other courses, you never have to learn the "Bass Clef". Scott Houstons books, or Norman Monath books teach you everything in the "Treble Clef", making things easier and less complicated, especially for senior citizens. In this book, you now have to learn the "Bass Clef".

I don’t understand how we can have a left hand pattern for any song? All songs are different. The melodies the harmonies the progressions. For example if I want to play born to run and then gospel these are different I get they are different genres. But I don’t get how one or a few pattern can suffice for a single genre.

There are two things people will probably underestimate watching this video. 1: The incredible amount of dedicated practice you need in order master the content in this book. 2: The incredible amount of skill you will acquire as a musician when you do master this book.

Sprellic Ultima - Thank you for your comment. It does take a lot of dedication to learn everything in this book, but once you’ve mastered these left hand patterns you can do so much! It is amazing how learning and applying these left hand patterns can enhance our playing and help us play the piano in a way we never imagined. I hope you enjoyed the video. Let me know if you have any questions about anything. Thanks - Jerald

What about patterns for the right hand? You are definitely playing more notes on your right hand than what is printed in the book.
@Alucard33592
@Alucard33592 4 жыл бұрын
Those are not patterns, he is basically showing so that as long as you are playing in a scale that goes along with your chords and in time it's going to sound good no matter what, or you could just add chord tones to your melody if you don't like experimenting
