@Michaelas10sk83 жыл бұрын
It is in vocal performance and string instruments. But in piano the definition is different and the same as portato, source: www.freemusicdictionary.com/definition/portamento/
@xin49553 жыл бұрын
@@esrakoc5640 with portato you add a bit of weight to each note so to say, and the articulation is something in between staccato and legato. Portamento is to glide between the notes (so more like glissando). But apparently some people use the terms interchangeably

This. I came here trying to understand what portamento (which is a *straight diagonal line* connecting two notes in sheet music) is. Its an impossible thing to do on piano so i was very confused about the title of this vid lol. The closest thing you can do on piano would be called a glissando. Wish you would fix your title.

your definition of potato is absolutely correct. However Portamento is different and doesn't exist on piano . At some stage in the 19th century it got mixed in certain theory books. The original portamento is a continuous slide from one pitch for instance on violin which is obviously not reproducible on a piano, whereby the portato as you rightly say is a semi legato where your transport one note to the other, usually using the same finger . the combined effect of trying to make a legato using the same finger achieve the desired effect.

I like the Mozart K. 330 2nd movement as an example of portato. The word portamento should not be used in piano playing as portato and portamento have two different meanings.
@2klodu959 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. There's no such thing as portamento on the piano unless you physically open the lid and bend or loosen the strings after the hammer hits them...not exactly piano playing at that point.

Incorrect early on about winds and legato..."start the first note and everything is on the breath." In the case of brass, one adds a soft tongue (Da tongue stroke/syllable) to each legato note. On valved brass not articulating for legato can be done but is not the best way to play legato. In particular, on trombone, not tonguing each note for legato gives a glissando!

Hey, motherYars, from Google (with love)(brutal, non platonic act of loving quite physically that is): portamento ˌpɔːtəˈmɛntəʊ/ noun MUSIC 1. a slide from one note to another, especially in singing or playing the violin. "some schmaltzy portamentos" 2. piano playing in a manner intermediate between legato and staccato. "a portamento style"
@sigmundalcover96019 жыл бұрын
If portato is not legato and not staccato but something in between, how is it different from playing a piece without any marking in it such as slurs, staccato or etc.? If its played the same, then why mark the portato notes?
@MetaKnight688 жыл бұрын
+sigmund alcover An absence of marking is simply unspecified articulation. Sometimes you want to dictate it to be played this way specifically.

Personally I find that playing repeated notes using different fingering puts my finger in a more relaxed state. It might just be a psychological, but playing repeated notes using the same finger "locks" your hand into the same position. Possibly causing tension? And I find it more fun to play repeated notes using different fingers, I can strike the keys in a more "natural" way I guess? I can't fully explain it, but try playing Friedrich Kuhlau's Op 20, No .2 You might get what I mean...

And if you have to repeat notes over a large number, it's easier to count groups of different fingers than counting one finger. Like if you have to repeat a note 15 times, it might be easier to track 5 groups of 4 3 2 fingering than 15 times of a single finger. I don't know...might be nonsense to you...but just shedding some light to your question...

I have some sheet music and I don't know what one of the notations means. It's a straight slanted line, and it might be a portamento, but I'm not sure. Could I sent the sheet music to somebody and have them tell me what it is and how to play it?
@FreakieFan6 жыл бұрын
Andrew the Beatnik I'm sure you've figured it out in four years, but if you haven't: I think what you are referring to is notation that indicates that a set of notes should be played from regular to louder or from regular to softer. (Depends which way it is slanted)

Elephants are still slaughtered. I have visited museums which showcase ornaments and trinkets made from ivory, just lying there - and for what? They are of no use to anyone. There will be no wildlife in the future.
