How to Play PS2 Imports (backups) Using ESR and Free McBoot 1.95

**Getting a black screen when booting ESR? Download either of the esr.elf guis I have linked to a usb stick and follow these instructions:** 1) Use uLauncherElf to copy the elf.esr from your usb flash drive. Hit Circle and navigate to mass, hit R1 over the ESR.elf file in mass. Copy. Triangle to go back, then find the memory card that has your freemcboot on it, either mc0 or mc1. Navigate to boot, R1 again and paste so the elf should be placed in the boot folder along with the other elf files. Delete the dud esr.elf file if you want. This is what you do anytime you want to move a .elf from your usb to your freemcboot 2) Reboot 3) Now you'll make a shortcut to your esr.elf file so freemcboot can find it since the old esr.elf is a dud. Go to the bottom of the list and start Freemcboot Configuator. Go to Configure ODSys. You want to scroll down to Configure Item and then tap right until you hit a free space (usually 9 or 10). You're going to name it ESR and navigate to the path on the freemcboot card where you placed it, in the boot folder. Hit return, then return a second time. Next you want to save the configuration to MC1 or MC0 depending on which slot your card is in. (Save CNF to Mass0/1) 4)Reboot

It shouldn't super matter if it's plus or minus. Maybe try loading without the dvd first and see if that kicks ESR into action. I'll think about other possible solutions in the meantime!

Because of you ROBOBIN and your informative video had made me go on EBAY and buy a Free McBoot card and boy oh boy was it the best investment ever.For years the PS2 was tethered down due to region restrictions and with this card you can unlock your PS2's hidden potential and having no Red Warning screens telling you what you can and cannot play is ridiculous.With this card that will become a thing of the past. However I've only just started experimenting with the Burning Procedure and it turns out the PS2 laser runs flawlessly on Burn Speed 2X. Granted it's slower but you will get the best optimal performance and the disc is guaranteed to boot fully. So thank you very much. I've always wanted to play the Japanese version of Metal Gear Solid 2 and now I can.

Yay!!! ENJOY! What's different about the Japanese version? I have found that burning at x2 does work best, but apparently it's not as gentle on your ps2 laser in the long run. I have no idea how true the claim is, so I'll just enjoy it while I can. Someone else in the comments below also had issues burning on everything except x2 so it'll be whatever works best and gets those pesky disks loaded. Congrats though on getting it to work!!!

My stepdad gave us his old ps2 during quarantine so I went down a wormhole all over the internet trying to find a way to play the iso and it's all been trial and error. I've been trying to get my game to run but nothings working. I burnt the game to a dvd-rw and everything went smooth. I launch ESR and i get a black screen. I try to patch ESR.ELF by running ulauncherelf and it goes to a 'no signal' screen. How am i supposed to patch ESR.ELF with a GUI version if i cant even launch ulauncherELF?

What is the fastest speed that you can burn the isos on the disc on? My minimum is 6x, and it sounds like it's too fast...

It'll depend on what DVD-R disc you're using, lets say the disc you're using is a 16X write speed then copy it at 8X speed, you should try copying it at -50% whatever the disc max write speed is.

I would use opl but it's inconsistent for me I would love to just use disc but I can't ever seem to have any luck when doing so I burn the ISO after patch to disc but then I always get invalid disc in drive :(

It could be the brand of DVD you're using or your laser has become to weak to read burned disks (reading backups is harder on the laser and like bad eyes, it won't be able to see the data if it's too weak) Also try burning at a higher speed, like 8x

yea it's burned to a DVD-R and patch the iso file with esr patcher. just when i go to esr it goes black screen. doesn't have the option like launchdvd like in your video. You'll just need the memory card however you'll need a usb if you think the esr.elf is bad on the memory card :) I'll link you to the official noobie package, it could be that you just need to replace the ESR.ELF in it with uLaunchelf! All hope's not lost. A lot of people seem to be having issues with the esr.elf itself on the memory card.

Most definitely a bigger size, a 700mb cd will not work :) You need a DVD, which I believe is 1.4gb. Ps2s games other than the very first ones, were all over 1gb in size. 700mb is .7 of a gb or one gigabite is 1000mb :) If that makes sense

okay so ive patched dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 3 with mods i ripped the game and added mods and burned to a disc (dvd-r) and whenever i load to play it never loads it recognizes the game and displays the name of my game. but when il lauch it its just a black screen

What disk media are you using, what speed are you burning at and have you tried another iso and gotten the same results? One other thing is to make sure that the path to the ESR.elf is correct. I've got a link to it in the 'Show More' section :) I find that a lot of FreeMcBoot cards haven't been tested before being sent out...

robobin okay so my game specifically is dragon ball z budokai tenkaichi 3 idk of this will work for other games. but anyways you have to download the original Iso (unmodded) and you just put the modded files into the original. it sounds complicated but it's a lot simpler since dbz only has 5files

Minus may work better but the brand also makes a difference. Same with burning speed. AND make sure you have a good iso rip which is why I burn from my own dvds

You may need to update the esr.elf I don't really understand why that one still comes bundled with freemcboot when it basically boots to black screen. You could try seeing if it boots with a real or burned disk in once you turn the system on.

This all works, except if you are using a Verbatim DVD - R you should probably use x8 as your speed if it doesn't work with x2 or x4

theres also a way to install FreeMcboot yourself if you have 007 Under Fire. It involves a disc swapping exploit by swapping the game at a certain point with a burned iso of 007 that has a hacked file that can run the installer from the usb

There is, but what's the point when you have to open up your console and block the sensors for the exploit to even work. An unmodded, unfreemcbooted ps2 cannot read burned isos. That's way too much work and effort when you can just buy a premodded memory card and NOT open your console up.

Ah in that case, yes for the slim the procedure is completely different. The slim, unlike the fat, has no disc tray. To get a swap disc to work, you need to block 2 lid sensors and move a disc break at the back of the lid area. I am going to add an annotation in though to mention that if they have a fat there are tutorials out there where they can install FreeMcBoot for free. So thanks for the heads up, you might save some people some money!

So I ordered a mcboot card and when I have it plugged in it's just a black screen. When I unplug it it fades into my memory card menu. Then when I plug it back in I get none of those ESR options. Only the base 2, browse and configuration

Need to be ripped. Free mc boot will never be able to play out of region disks. If you want that method you need swap magic 3.6 and to perform the straw mod on your ps2 if it's a slim. If ESR could load out of reigon games I wouldn't be making this video because there'd be no point for it.

I don't know if anyone will answer this but, anyway, I'm thinking about buying a PS2 Japanese model, SCPH 75000, the reason is because I found it at a real good price and very good condition. But mostly of my games (original ones) are American region. So free mcboot should work fine on this model, and by using freemcboot is there anyway to bypass region lock?

You can not use original disks period. That requires hard modding. ESR patching is used for burned disks only

Just use Swap Magic to play any PS2CD or PS2DVD games from any region including Japan. I play Panzer Dragoon & Bleach Battlers Blade 2nd on my US PS2 both of those are fully Japanese games also Swap Magic works for all burnt games. There is a CD ROM & DVD ROM Swap Magic just gotta know which to use as the PS2 CD games were blue & the DVD were regular mirror tint. U can download any game torrent and play instantly with Swap Magic. No need for any homebrew like McBoot or ESR.

I deleted it because I saw somebody else commented on it, but re-replied because I still couldn't figure it out. You're fast xpp. Anyways, I think I have. However, I'm not entirely sure if I followed the tutorial properly. It looked like something else was going on, but I tried to replicate it with the .elf It's hard to explain because I'm not entirely sure where I could've messed up at.

That's okay, the tutorial is for OPL but it basically works the exact same way. 1) Use uLauncherElf to copy the elf.esr from. Hit Circle and navigate to mass, hit R1 over the ESR.elf file in mass. Copy. Triangle to go back, then find the memory card that has your freemcboot on it, either mc0 or mc1. Navigate to boot, R1 again and paste so the elf should be placed in the boot folder along with the other elf files. Delete the dud esr.elf file if you want. This is what you do anytime you want to move a .elf from your usb to your freemcboot 2) Reboot 3) Now you'll make a shortcut to your esr.elf file so freemcboot can find it since the old esr.elf is a dud. Go to the bottom of the list and start Freemcboot Configuator. Go to Configure ODSys. You want to scroll down to Configure Item and then tap right until you hit a free space (usually 9 or 10). You're going to name it ESR and navigate to the path on the freemcboot card where you placed it, in the boot folder. Hit return, then return a second time. Next you want to save the configuration to MC1 or MC0 depending on which slot your card is in. (Save CNF to Mass0/1) 4)Reboot Fingers crossed, it should work, if not lemme know.

So when I put the .elf in there earlier today there was no other .elf I changed the path to .elf initially which didn't work, so I tried the gui test one and it works! Thanks a lot. One thing I did differently was instead of adding to a blank slot, I just changed the path of the esr already in there. Thanks a lot for the help!

You'll most likely have to check your local classifieds on this one, see if someone is selling them locally in your area. Or use ebay. The ps2 reddit sells them internationally as well. You're only buying a memory card with freemcboot installed, you don't need to buy opl as it's a program :)

Robobin nvm it turned out I wasn't using the PS2 power supply. That somehow made the PS2 die whenever a dvd-r was used. Using the real power supply fixed it

Heya Rayan! It won't work on ps2s with the number and letter code 8C and after, which is the 3rd quarter of 2008. They changed the bios so that freemcboot absolutely will not read. So if you have 8C you are right on the cusp of FreeMcBoot working and if you're 8D or later, so 9A/B/C/D you're out of luck. You can certainly try popping a memory card with freemcboot in and see if it loads, but if it shows up as just a regular memory card when the PS2 boots, freemcboot will not work on that ps2, the bios is just too new and the exploit patched.

Isn't true with the modells starting with 9. The early models of them with early Datacodes are able to boot fmcb because they still got the old bios. Start your ps2 and go to settings press triangle. Is your bios 2.2 or lower, your ps2 is compatible with FMCB.

Hey Karim, if you don't patch the ISO the ps2 cannot read the burned disk and therefore won't work.

Also, some games may need to be converted with a converter (I do it always to be sure). You could use "ntsc2pal" converter for this. It works for me.

Did some research because I didn't know this was sometimes an issue! If your tv doesn't like NTSC formats or if you're using composite cables (red, white, yellow) then yes some games may need the ntsc2pal to converter first before esr patching but if you're using the compontent cables (blue, green, red) then you shouldn't need it.

Did you get a flash of colours before hand? If you're talking about ESR loading to a black screen, you'll probably need to update your ESR.ELF.
