Console purists should buy repro carts or flashcarts. If you're obsessed with getting your hands on those roms legally, buy them legally from the Wii U eshop / 3DS eshop and add CFW to whichever device you're using that will let you rip your legitimately paid for roms to a USB stick, then add them to your flashcart. If Nintendo is not currently selling the game you want to play, do NOT feel bad about finding it "elsewhere". If they wanted you to pay for it, they'd let you!

"There are tons of people who want to play these games, but don't have an easy way to do it." At that point in the video, you'd only mentioned NES, SNES, and GBA titles. All of which are- extremely easy- to emulate on nearly any mobile device and PC. I know you guys don't want to "advertise" emulation or mention it because it's supposedly a "grey area", but really it's the only way for people to play some games without paying a fortune. ALL of these older titles wouldn't even benefit the devs if purchased now since they are all being sold by third party sellers at outrageous prices, so emulation is the only viable and easily realizable option for most people.

Something to note about the PS3's backwards compatibility. While it's true that all models can play PS1 discs, not every PS1 game will work, so you'd still need to have a PS1 or PS2 to play those discs. Early PS3 models also have PS2 compatibility, but I think it's a similar problem where not every game will work. Also worth noting with the PS3 is that the digital storefront is region free, so you might find some normally expensive PS1 and PS2 games on other regions' storefronts for just a fraction of the price. It's honestly worth checking out, and I'll continue to mention this. To get back with the Nintendo side of things, the 3DS and Wii U does have some good digital options that are certainly cheaper than buying them physical. Surprised you didn't mention Metroid Prime Trilogy costing $20 digitally on Wii U, while physical copies go for at least $60 (probably more nowadays, but that was the price I was seeing for awhile). And Metroid Zero Mission contains the original NES Metroid game to unlock, which is still present in the Wii U VC release. The 3DS also has the mainline GameBoy Pokemon games, and sure they are a bit dated these days, they are also expensive physically while they're available in the 3DS eShop for a fraction of that price. Plus, you can transfer your collection to other games with the help of Pokemon Bank! Can't do that normally with the physical versions. And while the prices of 6th and 7th Gen Pokemon titles will go up, you can buy those games at regular retail price digitally on the 3DS eShop, which helps avoid spending too much on a physical copy (because we all know Pokemon games rise in price overtime). And those are just a few examples I can think of without repeating what was said on the video. That being all said, buying retro games off from the second hand market is pretty costly, and it'll only get worse overtime. To many, it's the only option, and it can get more expensive if you don't happen to have the correct hardware...or even the right accessory for that hardware and software. Many games are locked on their gaming systems and regions to boot, and while a good amount of games in the past have been archived for later releases, not all of them are still available on current hardware. Due to this reason, if you're significantly on a budget and want to play some of these retro games without worrying about your budget, there is that one certain method which is very accessible at your fingertips on the keyboard this very moment. Of course, that method isn't as legitimate as buying the games normally, but it'll help in the long run. If nothing else, use it as a makeshift demo to see if you like the games you're considering.

I really like Gabe Newells comment on piracy: “We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem,” he said. “If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate’s service is more valuable.” It's a little bit different with retro games but the core statement is very similar: If you provide people with an easy opportunity to play retro games they will choose to do so, if you lock down sales of games of past decades you only get more and more people relying on emulators.

A lot of the games mentioned in this video that I'd be interested in playing I've already got physical versions of, from when they originally released. Even at release prices though, most of them still have cheaper alternatives today or the originals have actually gone down in price somehow. It depends though. If someone doesn't own a Wii U or a 3DS for their eShops, that's gonna tack on the price of the console(s) in order to access those relatively cheap downloads. I think it's still a good value myself, and since it's an official route to playing these games I'll always support it. But for anything where second-hand is the only option, gotta go with emulation. I'm so glad I watched this video I never knew Mario RPG was on 3ds
@jeremyfrank8813 жыл бұрын
I'm fairly certain its not. I just looked and it wasn't shown on my eShop
@YustinJ4203 жыл бұрын
Mario RPG is not on the 3DS. It's one of those SNES games that use a special chip in their cartridge and therefore need more power to be emulated

Okay but I need a new 3ds or a wii u for Earthbound, both of which are unnecessary purchases when my 2ds should be able to run it fine and it should be on snes online

The DS ones were incredible particularly, especially Order Of Ecclesia.

I desperately regret selling the majority of my game collection. I was a stoner in high school with no job who needed money. I had about 30 great GameCube games, 20 N64 games (some with their boxes), 20 DS games, 15 GBA games, etc and I sold nearly all of them to a retro game store near me for weed money. It's been about 10 years and I don't smoke anymore or have any of the money that I gained from selling my games. Wish I could play them legitimately and have them in my collection. Now that I have a good job, I'm buying all games physically and am trying to rebuild my collection. It's just a bummer looking back and seeing that I got like $15 for a game that I need to re-buy for $100+ now lol

The Street fighter collection is pretty nice, but the volume is so low.

Read this as Rare games and immediately thought rare replay was finally ported to switch. I’d run down the street naked if that happens

Hey, you've left out the Mega Man Zero Collection for the DS, which is going for as low as $8 right now.
@nintendokings3 жыл бұрын
$8? I still see it for ~$30-40+ here in Europe at least

Installed arch. Played earthbound for the first time in my life. And all it cost me was an "old" switch.

Been thinking about ways to play Earthbound for a while - if I were to get a SNES classic, would there be an easy way to play the other ones?Or would I have to go PC etc for that

Why even buy a snes classic? bsnes is a better emulator than Nintendo's
