I've heard Paul in a few interviews talking about the concept of "contrary motion" - one line of melody going up or down against a theme doing the reverse - with some enthusiasm. George was always more of a chord tone soloist rather than a scales player. Guitar Pilgrim right on the money again.
@peterveld13854 жыл бұрын
That's absolutely true August, in fact his very first song I Lost My Little Girl has contrary motion where the melody goes up and the chords on the guitar are G, G7 and C with the notes on the 1ste string G, F and E, thus going down....
@itslikethesamebutdifferent80204 жыл бұрын
You’re right, George was mostly a chord soloist. One of the best examples being All My Loving. Many people say George wasn’t a flashy virtuoso type of player, and he wasn’t, but his solos are a bit trickier to learn than say a Hendrix, Clapton, Page or Blackmore solo.
@ralphcordon56883 жыл бұрын
Chords don't go up or down. Lines do, whether lead or bass or other accompanying lines.
@whyyeseyec3 жыл бұрын

That's the genius of George Harrison. He always thought with chords, even when he was soloing. With all due respect, Mr. Guitar Pilgrim, but I disagree with you when you say he wasn't a virtuoso like Clapton or Hendrix. I think he was a virtuoso on his own and had a knowledge about harmony far superior than Hendrix or Clapton. Take his early years, back on Ed Sullivan's show: All My Loving, 'Till There Was You... all those chords in between the solo. I don't know, I'd really like to hear you talk more about it because I think you're very knowledgeable. Maybe a video about using chords on solos? Who knows! heheh Cheers, man!
@craniofacialsurgeon4 жыл бұрын
Eric - spot on. Chordal solos... take a look at the Pilgrim's video on Scotty Moore. This, together with Carl Perkins and Chet Atkins, is where George Harrison began
@ronnienaidoo32493 жыл бұрын

@4:19, "sh1te"! Pilgrim, you've become an Irishman... Another great analysis and fabulous for lockdown days. Thanks for not forgetting the Beatles. I can't agree that Harrison was not a virtuoso, however. He was fabulous in the early Beatles, post Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins days, and he wrote some era defining, or even timeless, songs. Harrison is so underrated because he's not flashy. What he does on a song like Dear Prudence is absolute genius, so perfect, and yet people don't think of it as great because it doesn't stand out in the mix. But on it's own, it's incredibly haunting, especially as he plays against John's rhythm part. For me at least. Dig a Pony is another one, where's it's even harder to appreciate because it wasn't recorded in a studio.
