@thensho
@thensho 10 ай бұрын
@@9tnine you can drop it anywhere as long as it's an open space (except a pawn in front of the enemy king). and yes, also in the promotion area. the rule for that is that you can drop in the promotion area, but you have to put it down as the unpromoted piece. when a piece moves into the area it can be promoted, but also when it starts it's move within the area and moves within or out of the area. so you can drop a piece in the promotion area, and next turn move it anywhere to promote it.
@akeem2983
@akeem2983 9 ай бұрын
@@9tnine There are some limits. For example - in shogi, the situation when one vertical column of the field has more than one pawn that belongs to the single player is illegal (promoted pawns - tokins aren't pawns, so they avoid this rule). You also can't let a piece appear in the position where it won't have any possible legal moves, for example - pawns and lances in the uppermost row of the field. Since they could move only up (if they aren't promoted), in such positions they would have been locked, so you can't drop them here and if you move them here - you should promote them while doing this. And yes - you also can't drop a pawn in a way that will result in a checkmate, but you can do this with any other piece. This applies to checkmates, but doesn't apply to checks, so dropping a pawn in front of the king generally isn't illegal

This looks alot more engaging and interesting than regular chess. If the pieces didn't all look the same and weren't all written exclusively in Kanji, I believe shogi has the potential to overtake chess in popularity. Basically, give me Naruto pieces as stand-ins for the Shogi pieces!
@coup-de-grace
@coup-de-grace 11 ай бұрын
The issue is the fact that your can drop captured pieces. Shogi pieces must point forward because they have no color (like chess with white and black). This makes it easy to capture the opponent's pieces and drop them for your side, because where the pieces is pointing distinguishes who the piece belongs to. A designer would have to work around this issue in making chess like pieces. But I agree it would be cool.

@@izanazir7088Youre not totally wrong at least. promoted pawn contains a letter と, which is still a derivative of a Chinese letter 止 but was developed in Japan around 900s to simplify another derivative. So it’s sufficiently far from its original Chinese letter and old enough to be considered a different letter. In addition, unlike Chinese letters (or kanji), hiragana such as と doesn’t convey its own unique meaning any more. Fun fact: there are tons of old sayings and idioms derived from Shogi. A notable example includes 成金, which refers to Nouveau riche because a pawn suddenly becomes と金 and moves like 金, which inherently means money, once promoted.

There are three restrictions to that 1-a pawn can not be dropped on the same colum as another of your unpromoted pawns 2-a piece may not be dropped on a square that already contains a piece 3-a piece must be dropped on a place where ot would still be able to move if it were to be moved again on the same turn. This means that you, for example, cannot drop a gold general in a place where it is completely surronded by your pieces But yeah, if it isn't a pawn then you kinda can place a piece you captured anywhere on the board, even on promotion squares

@@jestfullgremblim8002 I don't think that your last example is correct. Rule #3 refers to placing pieces where it would be an impossibility to *ever* move, specifically placing pawns in the last row, lances in the last row, and knights in the last two rows. If your last example was so, that would also mean that you couldn't place a pawn behind another non pawn such as a gold because the gold is in the way (this is also a common defense technique which all players should learn one day called pawn-anchored gold).

There are sets with alternative symbols printed on the pieces. I would recommend that for a local shogi group, but all serious western players learn the japanese characters eventually. All of the resources and charts or literature have printed chinese characters in grids. It's funny, in this way shogi resembles sudoku a lot, while chess always requires some sort of designed graphic to be displayed.
