I’m a Bb Clarinet/Alto clarinet player, I’m apart of a large community concert band, and I’m thinking of taking up bass recorder. Though I know it’s an odd situation I was wondering what parts could recorders cover of other instruments that are in there range (mainly the bass recorder), given the small chance of a recorder part being included in a concert band score. But aside from that have you ever seen or heard of the usage of recorders within the concert band setting?
@idraote3 жыл бұрын
I hope Sarah will answer to this very interesting question. From what I gathered from her videos about the bass recorder, it will be challenging to put it in a band with brass because it is not a loud instrument. The real range of the bass recorder is that of a mezzo soprano singer, that is from F below middle C upwards. It sounds darker because... well, all recorders sound darker in timbre, it comes with the family. Soprano and sopranino can be louder, especially if you select wider bore instruments (the Mollenhauer dream recorders come to mind) but I'm still not sure how practical that will be.
@DividingInfinity3 жыл бұрын
@@idraote Same! I honestly think it would be a good concept for a vid, there is virtually no information easily available on recorders within the concert band setting. And thank you for the information on the classing of it's range, I really didn't even think about it's actual range being somewhat high for a ''bass''
@nhaggin3 жыл бұрын
While deferring to Sarah for the final answer, as a fellow clarinet player my experience is that you'd need a soprano or sopranino to cut through the mass of the band, and what's more you'd need a recorder section. Something like the Mollenhauer Modern or Helder or Adriana Breukink's Eagle instruments would fare better but could still get swamped. The lower recorders really work best in a recorder consort. I'm not even sure electronic amplification would help a bass recorder in a band of modern wind instruments.

I'm teaching a ten year old on a soprano and she just can't play right handed. I turned the foot joint around and she's playing and learning very well. Question---should I modify the dished out area at the double hole pinky finger area for a smoother c c# ( if that makes any sense ??} it's a plastic so I don't mind it it goes wrong-- I have another
@acyutanandadas13263 жыл бұрын
@@mauchan87 I know, I even told he her she'd never play any orchestra model woodwind but left hand wouldn't change (Benoit Suave plays lefty, so there's some hope, maybe??))
@kallikles20033 жыл бұрын
@@mauchan87 Renaissance recorders were routinely made with two holes on the bottom, one on either side, so the player could choose which hand to use on the lower part (the non used hole would be closed with wax). So I don't see what's wrong with the suggested arrangement, as it's been done for centuries. Now, to be honest, Renaissance recorders did not have double holes for 6 and 7, which made life simpler, but a suitable solution could easily be found for today's plastic (and cheap but still very good) recorders. The only drawback would be the upgrade to a wooden instrument---but the pupil could just skip the typical intermediate step (factory made mid-range instruments, i.e Moeck's, Mollenhauer's etc), play a few years more on plastic and then move on to a custom made instrument (whose price would not be very different from the top industrial models in any case). In other words, go for it! Create the best learning environment for the student, and solve the (minimal) problems later when, and most importantly *If* they arise.
