Justin, I think you would enjoy watching 'Good Vibrations' the film. It has been released on DVD recently and it is based on punk music in Northern Ireland during the 70s. I highly recommend it. It shows the real struggle it was for bands like the Undertones to release songs like this.

Hi GJW45, I totally agree: hence my "as Justin says all depends on your amp..." comment. Interview with John O'Neil he states they "used an H/H... because we were big Buzzcocks fans and like the sustain they gave you when you turned the gain right up. We didn't use any pedals - we were anti-rock"

I play the same chord progression but lower down the neck with the the root off the E string. Frets: 10,9, 7, 5, 3, 4. All down strokes.

According to Total Guitar Nr. 213: "You'll need a humbucker-equiped guitar with the bridge pickup selected..." Amp Setting "Gain 6; Bass 4; Mid 6; Treble 8; Reverb 4" but as Justin says all depends on your amp...

Can anyone tell me the finger positions/placement for the main barré chord shape (D maj / b min etc.)? On Justins website I learned a completely different D chord (the "simple" one for beginners with just four strings and three fingers). It is difficult to see in the video which of his fingers are actually holding down the strings and which are not. Thanks!

Middle finger is reaching over to mute the low E then it is just a D chord. He starts using the ring finger to play G D and F# on the D,G,B strings. Then switches to use individual fingers to play with individual fingers on the D and G strings, the power chord. The switches back to the barre form so he can make the sus 4 chord with the pinkie on the 8th fret, towards the end. Sorry - five months too late probably!

Total Guitar is a great mag. However, their Amps settings are not accurate, there is just too many variables. The guitar, the pickups, the volume you are playing at, the amp you are using, and finally the overdrive/distortion you are using. This is a very basic sound to achieve. A good way to look at the recommended settings is for an overall guide. If it's Bass, Mid or Treble heavy.
