Great video! However, the difference between a euphonium and baritone is not the number of valves, where the valves are located, or even the orientation of the bell. The only difference is that a euphonium has a bore that gradually gets larger as the instrument lengthens (conical bore), and a bore that remains relatively the same diameter until the bell flare (cylindrical bore). There can be euphoniums with front facing bells, and 4 valves, or baritones with upright bells, and only 3 valves. :)

What model she was using was most probably YEP-321.For 3-pistoned euphonists,how do you hold your instrument is to put your index on 1st,middle on 2nd and of course followed by the third.The fourth one you put it in the thumb ring,just beside the third valve.To hold another hand it's the same thing.Oh,I would like to add,this is how euphonium works,same as all brasses,1+3=4.So if you press 1+2,you can press 3 instead of those two pistons.

Great stuff, girl! Few things... valve number and bell orientation (forward-facing or straight up) don't determine the difference between a Euphonium and Baritone, conical vs cylindrical does. The main tuning slide is the easiest way to tell. If the pipes are different sizes, it's getting wider sooner, or is conical=Euphonium. True baritones that are cylindrical are pretty hard to find. So this, and probably every other "baritone" you've seen has actually been a euphonium! (I didn't know this for years) You wont ever get a nose bleed! And the negative comments I'm seeing about the cheek-puffing thing... they really don't realize that your cheeks are going to puff slightly no matter what you do. If they didn't you'd be waaaay too rigid. Really good stuff! I've been playing Euph for about 12 years now. I didn't start out with the best instruction early on, so it's always a learning process! There's a great documentary here on youtube by the army field band on euph/tuba, I'd encourage you to watch it!
@pleaswaite10 жыл бұрын
That's also not QUITE true. A baritone is also conical, but much less so than a euphonium, to the point that they are often nearly cylindrical. The bore size also tends to be much smaller than a euph. Agreed that she's playing a euph here. There's also both 3 and 4 valve baritones and euphoniums. The 3 valve, bell front horns that are common in high schools are usually considered American-style Baritones, and the upright, 3 valve, narrow bore horns you see in the baritone section of British style brass bands are a different flavor of baritone. Of course, this whole thing is one of the most confusing and fought about pieces of music lore that you'll find in the low brass section ;) It doesn't help that the manufacturers will label an instrument baritone or euph interchangeably, without any real definition, and tend to just stick the baritone name on "student grade" instruments that probably should be rightly called a euphonium. Cheek puffing is considered bad, but she's not doing it here, and there's plenty of great players out there who puff out a significant amount. We agree there :) As for buzzing, I have a terrible time with that. I can buzz fine, but I can never pull off that trick where you buzz a pitch, insert the m'pce into the horn while buzzing and maintain the same pitch. Doesn't work for everyone. Some instructors also say that improper buzzing can be detrimental. I like buzzing on just the mouthpiece as a warmup. Good intro video!

Just a reminder- When taking out tuning slides you should ALWAYS push down the corresponding valve to equalise the air pressures. It has been known for pistons to collapse and it makes it easier to get the slide out (also make sure they are greased/lubricated). The lovely young lady did it automatically, but learners may not know.

In 2:20 you're saying that on euphonium C is played with 4th valve and on baritone it's 1+3. That is wrong. There are baritones with 4 valves (I have one) and euphoniums with 3 valves (I also have one). 4th valve is called quart valve and it works exactly like a F-attachment on tenor trombone. It's for widening the lower range of the instrument and it also provides different fingering solutions. On all instruments with 4 valves C can be played with either 4th valve or combination of 1st and 3rd.
@SpartanBaritone7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing! I always wondered when to use the 4th valve, and learned in lessons that it makes the same sound as 1+3 in C but also for lower notes. Depending on how many valves the instrument has, the player can determine which to use.

Great video (and you’re cute as a button). :-) Aspiring trumpet player here and I love your tone on the baritone. I just watched an Adam Frey video introducing the euphonium and baritone and could’ve sworn he said to rest the instrument on the left knee, so I’m going to review that part of his video. I really like the idea of matching your mouthpiece buzzing tone to notes on the piano, I wish some trumpet teachers had taught me that simple but brilliant idea! Update: I guess the video was recorded in a reverse view i.e. mirror effect.

Hmm quite a tough one to answer. In general depending on the quality of the self-teaching guide, i'd say that its better to do it, than not do anything for sure. And definately better if you are time restricted from visiting a teacher. What is Tonestro about, is it like a written guide or?

Her (left-handed!?) horn did not appear to be compensated which would make it an American-style euphonium. The British use compensated horns. The fourth valve (which she didn't use) provided range extension and intonation on certain notes. The Sousa-era baritone was a three-valve horn same as the euphonium but without the fourth valve. The American-style baritone that I played is not the same as a modern British-style baritone horn.
